  • As part of the continual training and preparations for the Moananuiākea circumnavigation of the Pacific, PVS crews are sailing Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia to a new training ground, toward the North Pacific Gyre. The goal is to reach the gyre at about 31 degrees north, where warm air from the equator is cooled and descends. Complementing previous training sails that head towards the convergence zone around the equator, this sail explores this area further north that plays a vital role in the systems that allow this earth to be livable.

Is there traditional Polynesian knowledge about the Hadley Cells, where warmed air rises near the equator, and then starts to fall at higher latitudes, around 30 degrees? Since the video mentioned this process, it got me wondering if Polynesian knowledge says about this phenomenon. If there was such traditional knowledge, especially about the North Pacific Gyre, that would be amazing because it would show how Polynesian ancestors voyaged much further north than many people realize.
