People generally think that emotion precedes Action. To get out of a rut they think they need to feel *good* before they can do something about it. The reality is that *Action* precedes emotion. If you want to feel good you have to do things you don't want to do right now so that you can get the benefit later. Use that momentum and experience as ammunition for the next time you don't feel like doing what you have to do to give yourself success and happiness. Love the videos, man. Inspiring.

I agree with everything you are saying in this video. After my dad died when I was fourteen I fell into a deep depression. I quit playing sports and smoked weed to fill the void. It took me a long time until I was able to recognize that all the destructive habits I developed were my own fault. Through a lot of hard work I have transformed myself into someone I can be happy with.

    I agree with Greg here
What you DO effects your mood .
For example laze round all day doing nothing , isolating yourself indoors , binge watching TV etc........ Will make u depressed
However activating yourself behaviourally by engaging in activities that mean something to you will make u feel better
Get outside , mix with people , do something with your time. All these fix will make u feel good
And also dont forget that mind and body are interlinked. So eating junk food and being inactive will make u feel depressed. Wereas eating a healthy diet and exercising will make u feel good

This helps me so much. I feel like, through trail and error, I figured it out on my own. Not to say this completely solves a feeling of unexplainable emptiness I feel some times. But the vast majority of the days that I feel that dread, lack of fulfillment and will to live, I noticed that I am engaging in cheap sources of pleasure. Normally those days begin with a couple hours of social media and eating in the morning. Intermittent fasting, the self hypnosis, and being on the program effortlessly(but still with discipline) has been super helpful mentally and I love your mindset bro. You have provided so much value over the years regarding diet, training, binge eating etc etc. and you also put me on the The Power of Now. I greatly appriecate it man this video and your recent videos especially have been so powerful. another video that was super valuable was "Why I'm Pissed off Right Now" Which really opened my eyes, and since then ive made massive progress in my career as a musician(I can confidently say I am a professional now) and taking life more seriously. @@SmartestDumbGuy Yeah, but with clinical depression you can have everything you ever wanted and still want to commit suicide. Circumstantial depression is what most people have, and that's much easier to deal with because it can be fixed by improving your life and changing things, while clinical depression has nothing to do with what goes on in your life, it has more to do with the brain, it's just much more complicated to deal with. I feel like very very few people have clinical depression though, while circumstantial depression is very common.

    • @vitaminb4869

Social media is bad for mental health any time of the day if you're on it too much. Make it a habit, twice a day only, then once, then few days none at all. There is really nothing on social media that is worth looking at multiple times a day, and scroll through same crap over and over again. It's just our lazy and weak minds are drawn to just mindlessly scroll for quick rewards by potentially seeing something interesting and unusual.

That's generally true for circumstantial depression, but I don't think any of that helps at all for clinical depression. People with that can have EVERYTHING they ever wanted, and still want to kill themselves, because the problem is in the brain. They also could have absolutely nothing, and it won't make them any more depressed. They will be equally unhappy if they have nothing or have everything they want. Very few people have that though. Most people have the circumstantial depression though, which can be helped with a lot of the things you mentioned.

In my opinion and from my own experience of suffering for a number of years after my teenager/early adult years it comes down to brain bio chemistry . I abused a lot of instant sources of pleasure like porn, weed, alcohol/partying, amphetamine etc. Your dopamine receptors get so desensitized to stimulus that the baseline gets elevated and ultimately nothing gives you pleasure anymore. The body wants to be in homeostasis and every source of instant pleasure reorganizes the adaptive tissue in your brain that seeking pleasure is the highest priority, once we are not able to not fullfil our chemistry needs the brain bounces back into stress/cortisol and activates the sympathetic nervous system. After getting your life back in order, picking up training, eat healthy, stay true to yourself and many more things your brain slowly starts to reorganize itself and your body starts to heal.
Every mental disorder, short or longterm, comes down to the health of your brain and body.
What helped me the most was Dr.Joe Dispenza, first take in the knowledge to view your mental state from a different perspective and than take actions and take care of yourself in order to heal.
I believe the body can be in a state of dis-ease, but it can eventually heal aswell and life will be more beautiful than ever before.
I am so grateful for everything that happened, sometimes life wants to teach you a lesson and the only way to get out of it is to grow and heal.
Embrace the journey folks, one day you will look back and you will realize that all the suffering was your greatest teacher.
    ❤💯

Greg, I *just* went through this exact quandary. Holy shit. And you’re totally right. What was *making* me depressed were all the vices I’d been abusing in order to escape the responsibility for momentary pleasure. People shit on the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality, but like Jordan Peterson says, it’s the accepting of challenging tasks and adult responsibility that *gives* us a sense of meaning. Ironically, avoiding growth to “relax” makes you feel the shittiest of all. Take creatine for a month and get back to lifting with a disciplined diet. Your life will change. Mind did, and I’m only progressing from here

I bought a house three years ago and I remember specifically thinking how I was actually afraid to die. Something I never thought about my youth.
Unfortunately this past year my job made some changes and placed me on a midnight shift where I work which has caused heavy strain on my relationship with my girlfriend and personal life. I have now had those feelings I did in my youth where I don’t care about getting “hit by a car”.
I’m feeling too much like a victim and not getting anything done. Although my job has afforded me a home it’s not enough and I need to get up and do something about it.

As a psychologist, I believe what you’re saying has fragments of truth, however, I advise to be mindful in your oversimplification of what your lens of depression is. Especially, when your lens is one that is starkly different from the average individual. You’re using very specific examples to Silo your message into an A or B situation when it’s not. People, if anyone reading this is battling depression, please get help… YOU MATTER… YOU have a lot more to do in this world and for yourself.

You wouldn't find many people depressed living a full life like Greg described. So unless they've done all that and still somehow feel depressed, going on some prescribed drugs should be the last resort.

@@vitaminb4869 I don't think you understand. Depression is an illness in the brain. "You wouldn't find many people depressed living a full life like Greg described." Yes, and you can say the same thing about people who have contracted heart disease. I could describe a great, healthy lifestyle, and if people would follow this, you wouldn't find many people with diabetes and heart disease. But once diabetes and heart disease sets in, it becomes a medical issue. Depression is a medical issue.

@@paulthomas281 it’s a medical issue because people continue doing the wrong things.

@@samlloyd672 I'm saying once you have it, heart disease/diabetes/depression, it's no longer a Do-steps-A,B,C solution. The solution has to be medical in the case of mental illness. And once there is remission, this must be coupled with doing the "right things", ie healthy living and healthy thinking. Do you disagree?

I disagree, depression is a mental state which is not equivalent to bodily malfunction like you stated heart disease or diabetes.

As a doctoral student in clinical psychology I can say that this video has some good points. Exercise, time on social media, sleep patterns, position in society etc do have a big impact on mental health; however, depression can also be biological. Take bipolar 1 and 2 for example which has a very high hereditary rate and is only manageable through medication. Bipolar is characterized by depressive and manic states. Antidepressants work (not always but sometimes) because medication can fix neurotransmitters that are out of whack. It is well documented that there are cases of depression in individuals who are very successful and living a healthy lifestyle. Also with all due respect Greg you have a very opulent lifestyle provided to you in part by inherited wealth, most people do not have the same resources and are in far less favorable circumstances. It’s not as simple as telling people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I appreciate the video nonetheless! Keep up the hard work.
