Thanks, Alex. To underscore one of your banned swing thoughts, our minds only hear "positives". For example, if you tell yourself "don't do X" what the brain hears is "DO x". An example I often used in teaching/clinical practice is to tell students to NOT think about pink elephants; within moments everyone is shyly smiling because they're thinking of pink elephants! In golf, if you tell yourself "don't hit it into the water" I can about guarantee that's exactly where it's going!
My two driver swing thoughts: 1) hands return the steering wheel to neutral at the ball; 2) slow, slow, smooth pace. My iron swing thoughts: 1) hands start and finish the low point at the inside of my front thigh; 2) right palm down through the ground; 3) slow, slow, smooth pace. But I still feel quick sometimes.
Almost all of my thoughts are during the lie assessment and set up phases. As mentioned by others, tempo and flexing my wrist in the back-swing (works like a charm for me) are my only two (intentional) swing thoughts. Thanks Alex, your tips have improved my game immensely.
I basically try and have 2 thoughts. First one is where my focus is toward the ball (slightly ahead of it w/ irons and fairway woods, and a bit behind on driver). Second is my tempo.
As the casual amateur just learning the game it's very hard to practice something then not see measurable results. You think you have a good practice month then when you go play one or two things collapse the round for you. Something I've started to do is to write two areas of focus on a card and have it taped to the steering wheel of the golf cart.
I try to use a totally different swing with every shot. I think the odds are better than I will accidentally hit upon something good, if I have 90+ different techniques going on through the round.
*Dump the wrong swing thoughts and add it the correct ones! How many swing thoughts do you have right now?*

My internal dialogue is that I'm only doing a 10% swing but even that looks too fast
That course looks amazing!!!

Glad you think so!
I have two thoughts during my swing.
1. “Don’t shank, don’t shank, don’t shank.”
2. “Dang it!!! I shanked!!!”
lets change those!!!
Good at golf instruction too!!!
