My dad told me when he just started doing business in the late 70s, he and a group of fellow Taiwanese businessmen flew to Frankfurt to attend a trade show. He was really excited because that was his first time visiting Europe and he imagined all kinds of amazing things to see there. Upon arriving in his hotel room right out of the window he could see a man leaning on a tree doing shots of heroine! That was quite a cultural shock because back then the authoritarian Taiwanese government would definitely firesquad your ass if they catch you doing drugs. But the Frankfurt Polizei just walked by shaking their heads and did nothing! That was quite a memorable experience for him.
Nah, pretty much just the people close to the borders might speak the languages there, like Polish or Dutch. Aside from that, English, Latin and French are commonly taught, sometimes Spanish, Russian and rarely Italian. There's a lot of second generation Turkish speaking people because of immigration, as well as some Albanians and now Ukranians, as far as I know. Mostly only young people speak English well, older people might still have learnt French or Russian, depending on where they're from.

Try California next time. From the moment I boarded on the plane to LA, I was showered with kind words by the flight attendent and the lady sitting next to me. And the next two weeks in SoCal were absolutely amazing. Best holiday ever, a bit expensive though.

One time we went to Prague and there were double the amount of people on the train because the previous one was cancelled. It was crazy, and unforgettable 🤣🤣
When had you been living in Dresden? Trains to Prague are often overcrowded, that's true. But (punctual leaving) long distance busses, too, because Dresden is the perfect departure for a trip to Prague. Inhabitants love to use this advantage as much as tourists do.

Last friday my train skipped my stop because they were to late. They told me themselves I should go in an other train a few stations earlier. After 5 Minutes there, the alternative train also skipped my stop. I waited 1 hour for the next train 😑
I remember once standing in the rain waiting for the train (didn't intend for it to rhyme lol) and they said that the platform was changed to the one literally across from us (you have to go up the stairs, over the bridge and down the stairs) and they only said that 1 minute before the train arrived. I never ran this quick in my entire life.
Best part is, my chef is a born Germany and lived in Germany all his life. I had to get by train to work every morning and "surprise" I was always late when the train was late. He refused to understand how it's possible since "it's a German train, it's never late", "You just need to get up earlier!" People like that exist, yes.

Funny Story: An English speaking friend once was very confused by the announcement at the trainstation. The train was moved to platform 2. But in Germany the don't use the correct standard word "zwei" for platform 2. They use the word "zwo", because it is less likely to be misheard like "drei" which means three. So he just couldn't figure out what "Zwo" meant, even it sounds a little bit like "two". Guess the announcement sounded really muddled. Just came to my mind, because the announcement in the video got that wrong 😅
i don’t know german at all (i’m from singapore) but what i’m inferring is that the concept of slang / short form is being utilised in announcements for the sake of clarity. we also use lots of short forms here although officially our first language is english, mainly for the older generations who never learnt english. it’s quite interesting…

well here in argentina we make small talks everywhere, most of them are made by the older so they spend time talking because they feel alone at home. plus the trains are like 5min - 10min each where i live.

@PiousMoltar only of the train is completely canceled. Then I get a full refund and can take the next train. If you arrive at least one hour later than scheduled at your destination, you get 25 percent refund. After two hours late at your destination it's 50 percent refund

I sat in Augsburg I think over 1h at the trainstation, our train was cancelled and the other was late. We ate cherry's and spit them into the rails 😂 was funny but the floor was not that clean and we had to ride in an full train standing for 1h 30 min was not that funny
