- Erin Morley sings an excerpt from Eurydice’s Act II aria in a rehearsal for Matthew Aucoin’s spellbinding new opera. Opens November 23, 2021. Production: Mary Zimmerman. Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Videography by Pete Scalzitti.
Erin Morley is simply one of the world's best sopranos and most graceful musicians in this era. No doubt about that anymore. As for the score, I enjoyed it a lot. It sounds modern and distinctive, but not throwing away centuries of development and evolution of knowledge in harmony, melody and rhythm - as Verdi said, "torniamo all'antico", what is new and original is often created from within the myriad elements of past tradition, combined and re-arranged in a novel way. That's how I like my contemporary opera.
I’m not usually too thrilled with modern composers of opera, but this is really thrilling. Melodic, haunting, and expertly sung.
The picture (and voice) of sophisticated grace.
I LOVE IT!
Brava! This is Erin’s moment. Now please more roles for her. Marie in La fille.
Finally! Contemporary opera that's melodic!
Not so hard to find now, though admittedly less usual than I think it's clear the overwhelming majority of the audience has long expected. John Adams', Mark Adamo's, Osvaldo Golijov's operas are also very melodic and full of beautiful and remarkable melodies that don't sound like mere half-spoken recitatives lightly accompanied by orchestra (with little connection between voice and instruments) as most of the "avant-garde" post-1960 operas.
Brava! The first opera to bring tears to my eyes since I saw Suor Angelica many years ago.
She's absolutely wonderful and this role was written to use her great abilities.
I saw the opera and loved this moment in it, but otherwise I wouldn't see it again
I like it. She sounds great. I thought it was Orpheus.
Linda voz!!
