33 years surfing and agree on the quad and squash for small waves. Noel supremely talented on your teaching It is the ultimate gift for me! Excellent videos thank you so much!
Bro, the amount of knowledge you are providing is INSANE! As a “new” surfer absolutely OBSESSED, you are instrument in help understanding the detailed fundamentals. Many thanks and respect to you Noel Salas!! The community appreciates your efforts and experience IMMENSELY!👊🏾🙏🏾
Super legit breakdowns. Been surfing 25 years and only now wanting to really understand the technicals needed to up my game at my age. My home break is reef, but ledging on takeoff followed by a soft shoulder before bowling up on the inside so looking for how to generate speed to make the most of that transition and this video really helped me to understand what I am looking for. If part two is as good, you'll hear from me again. \m/
I've been finding that going back to older videos there are more and more hidden gems that I didn't pic up on first 1 or 2 times around. Always great stuff Noel thanks for sharing 😎🤙🏼
Amazing video. Noel, Idk where you surf but it looks like trestles. Regardless it always looks insanely crowded. I'd love to see you do a vid talking about how you navigate crowds
I tried a swpb at my local beachbreak, but the waves are usually so slopey and/or mushy, the narrow nose wouldn't make the flatter sections (without a ridiculous amount of flapping). The wider/thicker nose on a true groveler allows me to make the reform much more often. Also, when ridden as a quad, it feels so much faster. My board's quad boxes are close to the side fins and, I swear, there's some sort of dynamic where the side fins shield the quad trailers so they have no drag...speed of a twin, but not too loose.
Thanks for this.. I feel the same most of the time at my break during the summer. Which surfboard models works for you? Do you have a favorite set of fins?
@@kelvinbatista9259 I'm currently on the channel islands "pod mod", but most any wide-nose shortboard would probably work (JS psycho nitro, Lost CA twin, Lost RNF 96, FireWire mashup, etc). My fins are Futures "Roberts" large (blue ones w/ carbon) and they're fantastic...however, they're discontinued, so the Futures HS1 would be my next choice.
Two of the most fun small wave surfboards I’ve ever ridden are the lost Mayham Hydra and Rocket Redux! Both of them have a really wide tail and low entry rocker and are so fun to surf on smaller days. I surfed the hydra out at Pipes when it was barely even waist high and I was having the time of my life. The rocket redux is also a super fun board I can handle bigger surf like overhead but also small waist high waves.
Thank s Noel good info. My biggest issue is the equation of my age vs volume vs board shape vs material vs paddling fitness. I can work on the fitness and I do a lot these days to counteract my age. I don’t really know if I’m not overvolumed on my boards. I’m ok with getting less waves bc I’ve gotten plenty on bigger boards in the past. My emphasis is now performance and vertical movements. If I can get the rail in the water with the most volume I guess is the issue.
That was a sick layback bash on the Akila at 11:49. I used to be one of those old 1990's Al Merrick twinzer freaks back in the day. I swore by that board for a long time. I would like to dabble with the more modern fishy deals. Where should I gravitate?
Hey coach ! Another Great - helpful video ! (patreon member here) I have a question please, Can twin fins help someone improve their surfing ? Especially if someone has a weak backhand ? cheers :)
The HD foam stringers are typically Polyurethane foam. Meaning, it's possible that it has a balancing effect regarding the bounciness/liveliness of eps. Let's keep the air clear on all the tech materials available to today's industry! Knowledge is power. Peace
Also, another relatively unexplored combination that's being used is Polyurethane/Epoxy. Get the neutral feel with pu foam and extra durability with epoxy. Add S glass on the deck for even more dent resistance. Let's go!
Respectfully, these waves are small but pretty good nonetheless. They are long period, clean lines breaking over cobblestone. Would love to see a video on really small waves, which are, by the way, shredded by a select few on hpsb worldwide, such as on the east coast of the USA, Brazil, or any east facing wind whipped coastline in the world littered by beach breaks. Great concepts displayed here! Would love to have seen this video made at t-street in the summer or even better, pacific beach SD. Having Justin Poston as a guest would make it even better, he killed it in junky surf in the 90s...
Im still trying to figure out what board I need to have. Right now I have a 6ft performance board this is because I am 6'4 I don't think that I can go under 5'10 any help? And great video!
I appreciate your continued content. How do I get in touch with you? I've primarily been surfing the McTavish Original (Tuflite @ 9'1") in a performance orientated style and want to get on a twin fin (shortboard). I'd like to see if you "consult", charge etc. towards getting the board. Thank you.
Awesome video Noel! Just out of curiosity, in small waves... what would it take to get you on a 5'5 foamie like the Lost RNF from Catch Surf? Is that a love hate thing for you?
If you could have only one board and you surfed Lower Trestles, what board would it be? 5’9, 180lbs and intermediate skill level on my best day. Thank you!
hey noel im a fairly big guy, 6'1" and 190 pounds. i find it really hard to get a board thats short enough with enough foam for me to fit in the pocket quickly on small waves. Edit: This is a bit of a throwback, but i was wondering. as a 2-6ft daily driver, would you opt for the phantom or the neck beard 2 in spinetek? Torn between these two boards. looking at either the 5'11 nb2 in spinetek, or the 6'0 phantom xl. both at my 34ish litre mark. thanks again
I’m shorter than you @ 5’9 but I’m 220. I had the same problem and found the Lost Puddle Jumper HP to be my best option @ 44L. Noel actually does a great review of it and I bought it on his recommendation. Has turned into my daily driver.
@@thomasloomis8995 cheers man, i actually have ridden one of them and liked it a lot. i ended up going with a neckbeard 2, at 5'`11 and 34.4L i find it suits quite well for the standard type waves around here on the east coast of Australia

Like everyone else has said, I cannot thank you enough for how much info you just gave in 1 video!

Akila Aipa’s fish boards are next level… hit him up. My favorite from him at this time is the Modern Fish
Would really like to see one on surfing crappy waves. Not just small but crappy also.
Thanks for doing these... Great content
Explosive is good!
Awesome AI backhand on Inferno

Do you do any surf specific flexibility or mobility drills ?
I stretch a bit with a focus on hips, and lower back. Nothing like yoga or anything.

What category is the rad ripper IYHO? HP? Grovel? In-between?
What are IYHO or HP
Because the rad ripper has extremely boxy rails and a TON of volume in the nose, almost too much
The Rad Ripper is a Small Wave Performance Board. It's fun in 1-4' surf and it carries good speed.

Too many boards. Too many wetsuits! Most ppl just own one of each, this talk is irrelevant
