- Chinese president XI Jinping has named it the ‘project of the century.’ Since 2013 China has invested billions into bringing the ‘Middle Kingdom’ to the forefront of global economics and international politics.
What China has baptised ’The New Silk Road’ allows a pair of trainers to be transported by train from China to France in less than two weeks. But they also act as a vehicle for a wave of Chinese expansionism across the world.
In Gwadar, Pakistan, China is excavating a giant port, as well as a spectacular highway that crosses the Himalayas, in order to open the doors to the warm seas. At the limits of their Russian borders in central Asia, along a new railway line that serves Europe, Chinese entrepreneurs have installed special economic zones and casinos in the middle of the desert. Further afield than Beijing, in Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa, the Chinese state has recently established a military port, a stone’s throw from the American and French bases, as well as building an ultra modern railway serving Ethiopia. In the wake of these movements, Chinese businesses are swooping down on east African markets, hoping to make the region one of the new workshops of the world.

The purpose of the interview is very clear. It is to show the problems of the the Belt and Road and use language to check the opposition between manufacturing workers and Chinese investors. As always, using small incidents to imply unfair treatment. However, it did not mention the various damages caused by these countries during the colonization of "noble" European and American countries, the plundering of resources and the trafficking of human beings. Without China's intervention, these countries would still be impoverished. China used to be a poor country and the most understanding of settling down. Western media, who are accustomed to good times, can solve their own immigration problems before reporting on others.
Manufacturing is a laborious and low profit industry. TSMC has returned to the United States, but the project has not been promoted during this period. Why? Because Americans cannot tolerate the hard work and strict discipline in the manufacturing industry. Ordinary Chinese people endure the separation of their loved ones and the poor living environment in order to seek a better life.

There is nothing sinister about China's Silk Road ambitions. As everyone has seen! Most people in African countries have been colonized by Western colonialism for hundreds of years and until now, they still continue to be extremely poor with an income of less than 2 USD/day. Why is that? Because Western colonialism only cares about greedily exploiting poor people, and plundering the natural resources of colonial countries to bring wealth to their own countries. Although the Chinese have ambitions to expand and dominate the world, they are not as greedy and selfish as Western colonialists. On the contrary, they bring money and technology to other countries to invest. Doing business with the goal of mutual benefit. Thus, if countries around the world are forced to choose between two evil people, they will certainly prioritize choosing a less evil person like China.

I agree with you. Neither are ideal for everyone. But China definitely has a more appealing sales pitch. I saw figures on their "deal" offered to many African countries to help with infrastructure only to lead the countries into being unofficially owned by China after numbers aren't met. If I'm wrong, the program did a great job stating facts and sources to make me believe a lie.

There is a lots of western bias & take in this documentary. BRI is beneficial to all involved, its not only beneficial for China only. BRI is opening up trade between all willing countries peacefully. The road, rail tracks and port builded in the contry are all controlled by its own country. The BRI is designed with GREEN in mind & itis a planet saver once the electricity are all green.
BRI is not only for trade it is also building friendship & relationship, provide employments, joint innovation and R&D work, protecting planet & world natural heritage. These BRI projects & developments had lifted billion of poor people out of poverty in the rest of the world in the last couple of decades.

It's not as if the Chinese will be in charge indefinitely on the train operations. Didn't it say it will be handed over in 2024, so I don't see what's the problem? I bet under French occupation, their lives weren't much better, if not worse. I mean if the French and other colonisers have done great works in Africa and for its people, the continent would have been rich now after so many decades of western rule. The Western Powers could have developed the continent economically, couldn't it and China doesn't even have the chance to do so because it had become so developed. The way I see it is China doesn't point a gun at the Govt and force them to participate in this BRI thing. The local Govt could choose to say no and remain the same as where they are. Do remember the Western Powers didn't give Africa that option, they literally plundered the whole continent, whether the locals like it or not. But there are a few things China could have done is to understand the sentiments of locals better instead of assuming that what they do benefit the locals.
So I have freight goods in the amount of $500 millions, with $100,000 insurance fees. If I hired a local and is untrustworthy, would I hire you where there is possibility of stolen goods? If it's my train, why don't I have a say to whom I hire?
