  • This song took me to a place I wasn't expecting to go, as I'd never heard a song quite like it. And that's an understatement.

"They say I ran down the road calling out your name..." this song is a mental beat down start to last note.. John Conlee was such a master of delivery.. Heartbreaking... Masterful delivery

Happy Sunday Don, John and this song are absolute classics. As stated by Clifford if from legendary songwriters Harlan Howard and Bobby Braddock. Harlan has written/co-written over 3000 songs and has had oner 900 #1's, and this one is one of my faves. Another favorite Harlan penned tune is "Never Mind" by Nanci Griffith and another favorite John Conlee is "Friday Night Blues". John had an absolute fabulous country voice and for awhile in the late 70's and early 80's was about as big a star as there was in country music. Great song, and great reaction/rating Son. I hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.

Nice info. Back in the day there were certain unique voices, instantly recognizable when one of their songs came on the radio. Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Kris, so many. I wonder how many distinct voices we’ll never hear because contracts seem to be given to people who mostly sound the same these days.
Can you imagine Kris Kristofferson being signed today? Yet it’s that voice and those lyrics belonging to Kris that are probably , to me, the best songs I’ve ever heard. Even without hearing a Kris song in awhile, I think of him fondly, and wonder how he’s doing. Same with Neil Diamond. I actually really care about these people who have retired, yet have been a crutch for me from the age of ten. Fifty years of them weaving through all the stages of life have become a part of me, and I wonder how many other people feel the same about those singers who have been part of the soundtrack of our lives.
Darn, here I go down a Kris rabbit hole.😊

A great song. I remember John Conlee for this song and Miss Emily's Picture. I think they came out about the same time. Thanks for the reaction.

He drank himself out of being able to remember the love he once knew. That’s how I always took this song. John Conlee is from Kentucky. Amazing how many amazing artists come from Kentucky and people never notice.

I'm so pleased you reacted so well to my suggestion, Don. It's a tremendous song. I didn't realise it was written by Harlan Howard. I can imagine Tom T. Hall could have written it, the story being "between the lines" which he did so well.

The ultimate rendition of a completely broken heart written by Harlan Howard.
    You can feel the pain……
    Betrayed to the max!!
    Happy Sunday all.
Great reaction Don and I agree with the rating…

This is the ultimate in break up songs in my opinion, been a favorite of mine since I first heard it. I dust it off and play it every now and then when I get morose thinking of my ex, and I can always say 'at least I'm not as bad off as that guy!", and smile again.

Don --- great reaction to a fabulous song I hadn't heard in ages. Always loved John's voice. You're right that's it's a unique perspective, but it's a real heart wrencher. I never had a problem with the line about the crayons, I thought it clinched the situation for radio listeners who might not have been paying close attention. Also I want to second Mike's suggestion of Never Mind by Nanci Griffiths --- it's a great one!

Glad to see some John Conley. Although I don’t understand what you mean from the line in the song “ if you hand me my crayons I’ll write down your name “ being oversold. To me it just gives your whole picture of where this person is at in the song. Have good day and I’ll wait for your next posting.

I don't think that I've ever heard another song quite like this one. Give a listen to "Rose-Colored Glasses" which made John famous. "Busted" is another great one, either by John or Ray Charles. The list is long and filled with great songs. John started out working in a funeral parlor, and kept his license just in case.

You’ve got to do Dolly Parton’s daddy come and get me and take me home with you. I don’t know if that’s the whole title but it’s not just the daddy song. I grew up with that song and it got me through a lot of crap even though daddy never came and got me.
