Dutch (Nederlands) is a West Germanic language within the Indo-European family, primarily spoken in the Netherlands, Belgium (where it is known as Flemish in Flanders), and Suriname, with smaller communities in the Caribbean (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten) and Indonesia due to historical ties. It serves as the native language for about 25 million people and an additional 5 million as a second language. Dutch is characterized by its relatively simple grammar compared to German, its close lexical similarity to English and German, and its extensive use of compound words. It has a rich literary and cultural tradition and is the basis for Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa and Namibia. Dutch is widely used in government, education, and media in its native regions and plays a vital role in international commerce and diplomacy.
West Frisian, or simply Frisian (Frysk in its native form), is a West Germanic language spoken primarily in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) in the Netherlands. It is the most widely spoken of the three Frisian languages (alongside Saterland Frisian and North Frisian) and is considered closely related to English within the Anglo-Frisian group. With approximately 450,000 speakers, West Frisian holds official status in Friesland and is used in education, media, and government alongside Dutch. It boasts a rich literary tradition and a growing revival movement aimed at preserving its unique linguistic and cultural heritage. Despite this, the language faces challenges due to Dutch dominance and decreasing intergenerational transmission.

As a native Dutch speaker and being exposed to Frisian through the media every now and then, you get a feel for Frisian and recognize how Frisian words correspond to Dutch. So I'd say I understand about 80-90% of Frisian. Just a couple of words that are not recognizable. I wonder how this is for Flemish people who probably don't hear Frisian that often (or at all).

Not really. They are two different languages. But both languages share much vocabulary.

Without previous exposure, no.
But I think for a basic conversation, it can work.
