The character Schramm is portraying there is Lothar Dombrowski, a "renitent old-Prussian pensioner", the hand is part of the costume. A true patriot, expressing his patriotism, as is proper, by complaining about the country so it may better itself. His other characters include Oberstleutnant Sanftleben ("Lieutenant Colonel Gentlelife"), a Bundeswehr press officer who is a bit too honest. He himself was kicked out of officer school btw, "unsuitable in character", highest achieved rank in service was officer cadet (Fähnrich), then lieutenant of the reserve. Then there's Drucker August, a social democrat living in the glorious past, in denial about New Labour, as well as a chirpy Rhinelander.

Er stellt einen Kriegsbeschädigten Politik- und Gesellschaftskritiker dar !🇪🇺 !

Another outstanding political cabaret artist with yet another style is Hagen Rether. You could check out his piece "Nothing Changes".

The one glove should meme an amputation from war. In the 50s an 60s a lot of veterans looked and acted like he, but at least in 70s those kind of characters disappeared, lately 30 years before he acted like that. He also mimics the habits of those , but 30 years too late. Even the suit , tie and glasses and even his smeared haircut represent the sixties. I always guessed , he wanted to symbolize those guys and habits, that could not adapt to the times changing, may be???

He wanted to portray the classic German educated middle class, who were able to quote philosophers and who always had the general knowledge of a senior class in backpack, according to the motto: "Once learned, always known!" A significant part of this class was wiped out in the war. And that's why there were always shot-off hands on stage. And they weren't taken away as early as you think. The janitor at my elementary school, for example, had exactly the same prosthetic hand and he only died in 2000...

One addition: When he "goes rapid fire", that is actually the character he is playing. In his full show, he switches between characters, and this one - "Lothar Dombrowski", a retired working-class guy - is especially "firing rapidly".
Would be great to get a decent translation of his program "Thomas Bernhard hätte geschossen" - it is absolutely brilliant, and from your perspektive, it might give you many more insights into the German culture.
Love your reactions, now you need to see Hagen Rether. Totally different approach again, but again totally worth watching.

Wow, I love the Sloterdijk quote about Zorn, that it has to be stored and handled carefully, and that the use of it must be considered carefully because it will exhaust itself in loss-making bungling. Now I want to read his book "Zorn und Zeit" (Anger and Time).

Schramm/Lothar Dombrowski - This is his most evil role. An old Prussian pensioner. Educated but nasty and speaks with an East Prussian dialect that you rarely hear these days. Earlyer this used to be more common and missing body parts were not unusual either, as pensioners were often disabled in the war.
He still has the role of Drucker August in stock, a Hessian Social Democrat and former trade unionist who lives mentally in the past.
And my personal favorite role, "Otl. Sanftleben (Lieutenant Colonel Sanftleben)," a press and public relations officer marked by his long military service. Usually a little drunk, politically incorrect and sometimes chatting away military secrets in a friendly manner. But so convincing and authentic that in an outdoor show at an airport, "Das Weichziel ist der Mensch (The soft target is the human)", people (and high officials) complained to the Bundeswehr how an officer could put forward such theories. Schramm only played an officer.

This guy is a propper naughty geezer.
At the Awarding of the 25th Cabaret Prize, in front of 300 invited guests, he satirically processed the events surrounding the recently voted-out CDU-led state government and the activities of the Baden-Württemberg lottery company. The audience, which consisted mainly of representatives of these two main sponsors of the cabaret prize, reacted with some crude insults. Visitors from the back rows of the hall, on the other hand, celebrated Schramm for his performance, while he partly regretted the scandal, but emphasized that he did not want to take anything back.

More Georg is always the right choice. So sad, that he decided to retire. We could actually need his mind-set now even more than ever. Excellent satirist and artist, striking very deep... Rentner Dombrowski might be his most famous alter ego on stage - but the other ones are just as great. He even adopts different dialects and the antics of different social groups rather perfectly. I like both, Pispers and Schramm, but Schramm is my all-time favorite.

People forget that when you buy tickets (to actual shows by artists like that), you get at least a solid 2 hours of this. (There was a bit by another (more comedic, less political satire) artist, Thorsten Sträter about him visiting a Ricky Gervais show in Berlin, and being confused how SHORT it was, considering the price and hype.

  • @petebeatminister
    @petebeatminister 2 месяца назад +2

Yeah, he is quite something else. At the beginning of his cabaret career, he used to go on stage in a Bundeswehr officer's uniform. This thing with the hand is also a trademark of his, the "war injury". I dont know if its real or not, but for sure its not from war.
In general, there is a frustrating notion behind all that political cabaret for me. All those brilliant minded guys like Pispers, Schramm, Nuhr and several other, are spot on with what they say and the people are applauding - but in reality it changes nothing at all. Thats why Pispers quit, when he understood this. Very discouraging to watch this, decade after decade.

      >"At the beginning of his cabaret career, he used to go on stage in a Bundeswehr officer's uniform". Actually he still did most of those characters all throughout his career. Partly because getting blasted by Dombrovski for 2 hours in an evening filling show would be exhausting. For himself AND the audience.

Without subtitles it is impossible to follow him and even with them, for a foreigner it is very very hard. Think of Volker and multiply the complexity by 2. Georg and Volker, the best there were.
