Great video! I took delivery of the standard 2023 890 late April. Now done in a little over 14.300 kilometers or 8885 miles on it around in Scandinavia. Chose the standard because I didn't think I'd need the R, and wanted more road manners. It is flabbergastingly good for everything I've thrown at it. Also offroad. Might swap it in for the R but unsure about how it'll be on very long haul whilst compared to the standard. I had a 1290SAS prior btw. Went for the Powerpart seat and didn't regret that. Interesting that you mention about heat, not had any issues with that. I run mine on low RPM for the most part so that might be why. Plenty of torque to get me up even the steepest of inclines. I have had one issue which never came back though, around 10k kilometers it just died. Turn ignition off, turned it on, started right away. Got an engine fault, but it went away and have never come back. Other than that, faultless. On my second set of Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR which is standard on the standard model. Does the job :) Cheers.
I have a 2022 890ADVR…highly recommend a decat and Wings exhaust along with a rear sprocket change up 3 teeth. You will have a completely new bike that is a rocket on and off road. Other ad ons are AXP skid plate, Cycra hand guards, Scott’s under bar and KTM bend Renthal bars. Also seat concepts tall seat. Now amazing bike for me.
I just did a 5700 km trip in two weeks. Great bike not a single issue. Perfect on twisty roads, super on gravel and dirt. Even a 700 km stretch back home in one go is not an issue
Great follow-up review Jon! I still remember when you tried my '19 790 and thought you might bond with it if you gave it enough time to gel after some customizations. I still am in love with my first-year Adventure R and haven't seen a single bike that would cause me to trade up, down or sideways for what I use mine as. That said, everything is always a tradeoff... Re: wind protection, I haven't found the ideal solution but that top deflector, different mirrors and 3D-printed tank deflectors helped a bit. Still open to better protection. I replaced my bars for ones more suited to my wrist bend and also standing. Dunlop Trailmax Missions have been great, but drop in the corners fast when new, cup after 8k or so, and prefer to avoid mud and tar snakes. I replaced my pulsing front rotors after overheating them with too-tight hand controls. The CamelADV clutch lever is wonderful, and I highly recommend a brace for the console stack since they mount to just two welded posts. I'm avoiding engine guards because they're heavy and bolt through the engine case, but miss highway pegs, so I bought Bosley's lowered pegs for better knee ergos. Sometimes my bike starts rough first thing in the morning but I suspect it's too-lean mapping, so I ignore it. I did find the suspension soften up a little after 12-15k miles - it's still amazing everywhere I take it (highway, byway, gravel, hard pack and groomed twin track).
Thanks, Scott. Good information. I'm using the same windscreen extension as you on your 790. It's enough to get by. Looking forward to the aftermarket finally kicking in with options. The 890 is off to a solid start with me. Hoping I fall as deeply for it as you have for so many years.
Concerning cold starting. You need to switch the key, and wait until your heard the last “click” which takes some 10 sec. Once you are patient enough it will always start on both cylinders normally. Give it a try
I’m thinking the fuel system is not holding pressure in the line. A little off the subject. I have a truck that I drive. I have to turn the key on wait a couple of seconds ( to build the fuel pressure, ) and then it’ll fire right up. The reason is there’s a check valve built into the fuel pump that’s not holding the pressure. Just a guess I think that’s the problem with the KTM 890. Turn the key on wait a few seconds for the pump to build up pressure and I should start up, again just guessing.
At same age, i feelya Sir. I have one yr lease (just renewed in east central fl) then relocating to East Tennessee. Im debating the 890r over the 300xc-w / not easy decision as i desire MOSTLY off road. But as next summer approaches i (hopefully) will have definitive answer. Appreciate the content amigo
Mostly off road...may I suggest the 690 is a worthwhile contender. Fits right between the two you mentioned. If I did mostly local, off road, I would have kept mine. Good luck as you make your decision.
Nice video, thanks. I’m glad you like the bike it is a really nice looking one. Can I ask how much you pay out of the door? I know the price is 15200$ I just wanna know how much people pay for this out of the door. thanks
Thanks. Can't really give you a useful OTD price. I added stuff and paid for installation, plus different states and fees in each. I'm fortunate to have a fantastic dealer (MotoMember, Purcellville, VA). They made money, I was pleased with the deal. I never need to shop around. I'm happy to have a great dealer and support them.
Dang, you know where all the dirt roads are. I considered doing Squirrels Gap but wasn't sure if I would be in over my head on the SAS, so never tried.☹
I've only scratched the surface on the dirt around here. I take the SAS on Squirrels Gap on occasion. It's a pretty mellow road. There's a 10 foot sandy area, and you do need to go over the gravel hump in the road a bunch. In my opinion, it's one of he easiest off pavement rides around here.
Thank you. I appreciate the kind words from someone with your experience. Next adventure planned will be on the KTM Super Adventure S. I still need to work that one into the channel. I do want to get the 890 up to the Pennsylvania Wilds - BDR-X. Enjoyed that one last year on my old 690. The 890 will be perfect on that route. I do have some videos in the editing phase that will be a surprise to anyone watching the channel. A twist no one would ever guess. Thanks for watching.
@@dirt_dad_stuff Wow that sounds interesting, both the BDR adventure and the new twist, twists are interesting in it's own. Could be both good and bad for the channel itself. I do what i want on my channel and have to "pay a price" for that. Different content on same channel really mess with the algorithms. But i have chosen to ignore that so far 😂. I will stay tuned 👍
@Braapncamp I do appreciate your thoughts. Right now, I'm considering this to be my experimental channel. See what works and what doesn't. I honestly don't know where this is going to go. The 890 is currently popular, but that won't always be the case. I'm intending to follow your path and do whatever interest me. Let the chips fall as they may. Thanks for sharing your input.
The 690 is a fantastic dirt bike. If you're looking to do primarily dirt and little pavement, it is hard to find beat the 690. It is lighter and less hot than the 890.
Dude, where are you riding? Those roads look like Central Europe. If it wasn't for the US road makings, you'd have me fooled. And I thought America was all flat as a pancake from Alabama all the way to Colorado!

Nice! It is an amazing, versatile bike.
Nice to hear your enjoying it. I'm sitting on 1.7K on mine and loving it.

Can you tell me if the seat has 2 positions..low and high .
Thanks, I don't believe there are different seat positions for high and low. I could be wrong, but it's not obvious to me that it could be changed.

Interesting...thanks. I'll give it a shot.
To add to this, crack the throttle slightly when starting.
de cat/mid pipe and change the air filter, upgrade it and you will be good!

Tractionar dual venture tire replaced the tractionar adventure. It's a little different though but still a 50 50 tire
Good to know. The entire Tractionator line is new to me. Looking forward to trying it.

What tire are you roll'en for twisties & dirt, the stock Mitas E-07+ Enduro Trails ?
Still on stock tires...until Friday.
@@dirt_dad_stuff You can try the "Tractionator DualVenture" for the front with the Adventure rear!
@@bschwebel It's under consideration. Still have a little time left with the E07

Try 87 octane fuel for the cold start issue, It works. I know blasphemy right?
Tried it. Not perfect, but does start on both more often than not. Also have tried the two click method. Again, not perfect, but usually works.
Replace the mid pipe to cut down on that heat man. It is insane in traffic anf technical riding.
Would that be the "de-cat" mod?
@dirt_dadstuff9005 yes

Nearly everything showing in my 890 videos has been shot in Northern Virginia or West Virginia. We are blessed with fantastic riding here.
West Virginia...mountain Momma... makes sense! 😂😂😂
