The Gyrocopter flying club film about what makes an effective landing and common errors. Understand how to land consistently well and be confident in what you are doing and why you are doing it.
The Gyrocopter flying club is making a series of film to give an insight about gyroplane flight. Of course to make the films watchable in a RUclips context they are a brief overview. For more detail contact us via the website or email gyrocopterflyingclub@gmail.com alternatively contact your own flight instructor or get him to liaise with me directly.

I nearly came a cropper when the runway in use was changed by my instructor who was in another aircraft, owing to wind direction change during a 'touch and go' session not long after I had gone solo. The new runway was 28 and, as it was late afternoon, the setting sun was low over the end of the runway. As a result, I could not judge my height well and not having flared, my nosewheel hit the runway first with some rudder on. The aircraft swerved violently to the left and began to rollover to the right. Fortunately, I had made this mistake this training and knew, by the instructor's swift intervention then, to apply power and opposite bank. I recovered the aircraft (just!) and came to a stop safely. I was so shocked, that I backtracked along the runway to taxi back to the hangar forgetting to put the stick forward and would probably have chopped the empenage tail off had my instructor not spotted it and called 'Stick forward' over the radio. I think that the importance of protecting the nosewheel during landing cannot be overstressed and should be included in 'common landing errors'. A few aeromodellers, waiting beside the runway for the airfield to close operations, had a 'ringside seat' as my aircraft careered towards them at speed and under full power !! I went back to apologise afterwords and received lots of advice on technique [amongst other things :-) ]. You never stop learning.

One thing that is often overlooked in flying generally isn't so much the actual techniques involved in a particular element of the flight (although that may well me the case) but the mental capacity and mental alertness of the pilot. To that end student and low time / low recent pilots are very weak and need help to become alive to the issue.

@@gyrocopterflyingclub6148 David Watson, Were you looking where your instructor had taught you when you rounded out or directly in front of you on the runway?

Simple. Rotor mismanagement after touchdown. Did not push the stick forward and center or slightly into wind. Rotor thrust was still substantial and took it in the direction rotor thrust was pointed. In rotorcraft, till that rotor is turning ... you are flying. Just because you touched down and came to almost zero airspeed does not mean rotor is not producing lift
