  • Kilmaurs became a Burgh of Barony in 1527 thanks to the 3rd Earl of Glencairn, Cuthbert Cunningham. Fourty tenementers shared the land granted and a council was established with a praeses and bailies elected. The first tolbooth dated from around 1600 and the new one, the Jougs, was built around 1709 with a steeple added in 1800 and major alterations made. Later it houses a fire station and engine as well as the prison and court/council chamber.
The Maaks Well may mean' communal' well and stands next to the Carmel, below Kilmaurs Castle and Place. A legend states that it always flowed until the laird excluded the people from it. The local priest told the laird that it would not flow again until the people were allowed to access its water. The laird relented and the well flowed again.

Really enjoy these interesting pieces of Ayrshire history. Ex-husbands childhood was at Caprington estate where the Cunninghame family still owned the castle and estate grounds. Well known landowners even now!!
