THIS WORKS!!! I had a pretty solid game when I was young, but after age 50 I started coming over the top more and more. I've tried MANY fixes, but in my case, practice does not make perfect. I video all of my practice, and although I make a good shallow swing on every practice swing, I come over the top when hitting an actual ball. I'm 72 now, and just watched this video on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. I went out in my backyard and hit some balls for about a half hour, and was making great contact. When I reviewed the video, I was shallowing the club much better. On Thursday July 22. I played 18 and the results were great. These days, my game is basically get NEAR the green in regulation, then chip up and hope for a 2 putt bogey. On Thursday, I hit FIVE greens in regulation. Doesn't sound that great, but how about ZERO greens in regulation as my usual experience. And I don't mean I hit these greens by accident, or by rolling the ball up there. These were high, towering approach shots that left ball marks that I had to repair. I hardly EVER have ball marks to repair! Bottom line, if one half-hour practice session got me to swing better, I think I am on the road to a consistent shallow downswing. Thank you, Clay!

Clay, I took golf lessons from 4 different certified golf instructors for over 10 years & lots of wasted $. NEVER GOT BETTER. Your message is a " Break Thru ". In one range ball session I experienced a very significant & truly astounding improvement. Trying to improve on the same old tired swing improvement techniques will leave you with the same old frustrated swing. Thank you very much for this innovative, counter intuitive real world practical helpful tip. I am grateful because I now actually play golf.

The figure 8 move is what made Jack Nicholas so great. I started it last year and added 20 yards to my drive and I hit so many fairways now. It’s crazy.

I worked to do the reverse loop & found I hit all my shots, including short shots, much better. Initially I used it as a drill in my workouts & found it worked so well & is so easy, that now it is my takeaway. Thank you

When I'm struggling with my driver I always go back to this and it helps so much. I have a habit of being too steep with driver causing pop ups or high left shots, I go to this and my only thought is take it outside and back inside, like you say figure of 8 in my head

Good advice for those who genuinely come "over the top" and cut across the ball...weak slice and no distance, especially into the wind. But don't forget the swings of many of the greats...Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and ultra long hitter Mike Austin, to name a few...all took the club inside early, which helps with shoulder turn, and then looped slightly to the outside just before completing the back swing. Mostly their club path into the ball was still from in to out. Try it, it may work for you better than dropping on the inside and then struggling to get around the front hip and leg..ala Wayne D.

great video!! i do have a couple questions tho, after watching it:
    1) when bringing the club back outside, does it need to stay a little flat, or should it be at a 90 degree angle, and
    2) can this work with every club (lw-driver), or just the irons?
Thanks again for making this video!!

    Evening Clay,
Excellent video. One point of clarification please. In your demonstration it appears that 'drawing the figure of eight' with the club head is almost entirely a function of the arms with the body appearing to be in a supportive role. Yet we hear much these days about the body or pivot led swing with 'powerless arms' simply following along. I guess it a blend at the end of the day but are the arms swinging vertically up the initiator of the loop or is it the body 'heave' Thank you,
    Bill

When I do this I messed up my contact and seem to shank and top the ball. Makes me want to go back to my over the top swing where I make contact and get the ball in the air. What am i missing shallowing the club. Doesnt seem to help.

When you bring the club from the inside, initially you may/will struggle with contact and especially shanking (if you think about it, as your club is coming from the inside to out you introduce the hozel in relation to the previous path) until you get used the move. Once you begin to get used to where the club head is and striking the ball with the center of the club head, you'll see a much more powerful strike and better ball flight.

I try to stay shallow by dropping my hands at the top and then tucking my right elbow to my body on the downswing. Kinda works for me.

i've never played golf, but in my experience, if you start thinking about where any particular body part is during any athletic move, you're not gonna have a fluid movement. It has to be more abstract in order to get the body in the right position in the right sequence/timing. Just how you can't think about your knees lifting and bending when you're running

    • @rhull3939
      @rhull3939 3 года назад

@@Postermaestro yep. You're right. But if you practice it enough then it becomes second nature.

What if you swing too far inside to out? I get a left hook that doesn’t start out right every once in a while. I feel like bowing my wrists at the top closes the face, and I swing too far In-to-out

I now play the shank. I aim around 50 to 125 yards to the left of my intended target and hit deliberate shanks. Every onnce in a while however I hit it pure and the ball goes where I was not expecting. Once you learn to play the shank, your game will never be the same. In match play generally what happens your shanks start rubbing off on your opponents and then it's game set and match. The psychological turmoil the intended shank imposes on your playing partners is so severe it often causes them to crawl into a fetal position which half the time results in a forfeited match. I can't stress enough how the played shank will forever make you a feared competitor. Most players do NOT have the ability to stand up to the SHANK, especially once they start hitting them. You can literally shank your way into the winners circle nearly every time. I love it ❤️. Learn to ShAnK the ball at will and you will become a force to be reckoned with. The more you can master the shank, the more you will dominate the competition. Thanks. And good luck in mastering the shank. It's in you. 💪
