it’s one of my favourite bts songs.
The song gives voice to their fears. Fear that one day music will not be able to move or influence them. The moment they encounter the black swan within them, however, they are struck by the paradoxical realization that music is all they have.
"It's the confession of an artist who really knew what music meant to him.

Right. This song's inspiration came from a quote by ballerina Martha Graham which says, "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” So BTS is voicing their fear of losing the passion to music, which will be like their painful first death.

“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful” by Martha Graham, a brilliant American choreographer and dancer. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death.
They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (their deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them.
Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelgänger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion.
This song became even more heartbreaking for us after their FESTA Dinner 2022, when they announced they’re taking a break from making music as a group. They expressed that they had been feeling lost and unsure of their identity as a group since the MOTS: 7 (this song’s album) release and the plan to take a break had been in place since then. They planned on having their world tour (MOTS Tour, which got canceled due to COVID-19) and then taking a break to work on their solo music, not only to find their unique flavour as artists, but also to rekindle their passion for music. Reading the lyrics for Black Swan, it makes sense that RM cried after writing this song. It expresses their fears at the time, how they felt like they no longer had an identity and feared they’d die if they lost their passion for music.

Hard to believe huh? He says that he raps the way he dances, with the rhythms that he feels in his body. I think that's why he has such a unique flow and approach to rap.

The lyric is right, actually! It is "Film it now" and now "Feeling it now" and it make sense if you know the context!
This is the note under the "Film it now" lyric by Doolsetbangtan:
*"Every moment, even the moment where they struggle at the bottom of the sea, becomes eternity because it is filmed. This reminded me of the scene where people were holding their phones up to take pictures of SUGA in Interlude : Shadow and concept photos (S version) of LOVE YOURSELF: Answer."*
BTS is always filmed in every possible moment. It's how life is for them as someone who's in the spotlight. So when they say "Film it now", they're basically saying *yeah, go on, film my downfall too* or at least that's my own interpretation! 💜

yes! also to add on, the reason it sounds like feelin me now is likely due to their Korean pronounciation shining through. In Korean there is a lot more emphasis on words being broken down into syllables in a certain way, and that comes out in their pronunciation of English words. I think in the same way they sing “fake” as “fake-uh” in fake love, they sing “film” as “fil-um” here in black swan. They turn those one syllable words into two syllables.

the lyrics hit even harder knowing that they wrote them when they were starting to lose their passion for music. They were "dying their first death," the death of a musician. Their plan was to do one more tour after this album came out, and then go on hiatus to try and find their passion for music again. Obviously they didn't go through with that cause of the pandemic, but still.

Black Swan is a very personal admission that the music they so passionately pursued in the beginning may also become the death of them (Killing me now) in the end. And, true to the BTS story, it WILL BE captured on film.

I am sure you know this now, but to clarify for anyone reading this later....they were not expressing fear they would lose their impact or influence. They were expressing fear of losing their passion for their art. It's a deep fear of all artists. That the art ceases to move you and ceases to have meaning for you, the artist. That is the first death they talk about, the death of an artist who can no longer find their passion and love in their art, can no longer perform or create. They were in a period of intense burnout at the time, having gone ten years (counting trainee time) with no breaks. Continuing to produce art was like squeezing blood from a stone for them at that point. They felt spent and empty, even though they were still producing stunning art, but their music reflects that struggle.
But, just after this dropped and before they went on their sold out, biggest ever global tour, the pandemic slammed down on all our heads and their tour was cancelled. They found themselves suddenly on the other side of burnout - being forced to be idle when they wanted to work, to tour, to perform. It was a really difficult time for them, and I think it gave them a really different perspective on their thoughts of burnout when they suddenly could not be with ARMY and not perform on stage. They all took it really hard, particularly the younger members (Jimin, V and JK.) Jimin channeled his pandemic hard drinking depression feelings into his later album Face.

To see some of BTS' personality, because idols need to show case it to make it, I suggest Run episodes. Ep 32. The boys are younger but it is fun and easy to watch for someone new to BTS as a whole.

This isn't just about staying relevant, it's about needing to "do your thing" and produce music to make a living when you're burned out and no longer inspired to write. The fear that one day the thing you love, the one thing that lights your soul, will turn into something you resent because you pushed it too far, got too commercial, ran out of things to say, got too jaded. Sure, you may be able to crank things out, but it'll just be trite paint-by-number sh*t-- no art, no soul.
What blows my mind about this song is how they took that real fear and turned it into its opposite: something utterly moving and different and beautiful. This really is a masterpiece.

As always I loved your reaction!!!! There is a famous quote by dancer Martha Graham (creator of contemporary dance) "A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful"...BTS is telling the same in this song but with music...despite they have increasing fame and are rich...they are artists...most to them is art...and they are saying if someday they lose their creativity and passion for music, gonna be their first death. Also, they are talking about the strength to fight against their own shadows to keep doing what they love to do.

so black swan was one of the song that they’re supposed to leave us with before they go to a break and military in 2020. BUT because of the pandemic they postponed their plans. Nonetheless, this song was definitely about their love for music. Music and art has always been their passion and soul. So for them, if writing songs, singing, rapping, and/or dancing does not resonate to them anymore, it will be their first death (as mentioned in the lyrics of the song). I love this song personally because it symbolizes a lot of bts’ artistry. From singing, rapping, song writing to dancing. Plus, their emotions…UGGHH SO GOOD!

This song was written after they had been going so hard from 2013-2020. They have said they did lose their passion for music with everything they had gone through. The plan was that this song/album would be released, they would do a world tour, then do their military enlistments. They'd be able to step away a bit. Of course, then Covid-19 hit. The lockdown happened, the world tour was canceled. Rather than keeping with their plans to enlist then, they stayed back and spent TONS of time with ARMY doing lives, online concerts, etc. They released 3 English-only songs for mass worldwide appeal to lift spirits...Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance. From what we know now from interviews, their 2022 Festa dinner, this was a very difficult time for them. But, like usual, they put their fans (and even non-fans...just the world in general!) first and stayed for us. MANY, many ARMY found them during the pandemic and have said BTS literally saved their lives. We do not deserve them.
They got their passion back...jhope, RM, Jimin, and Suga/Agust D have all since put out albums. They've all been doing their solo work and collabs, with more albums on the way.
Happy ARMY birthday to you! They just released an autobiography today, which you might want to read! If I haven't yet, I do want to recommend Taylor's Guide. You are so genuinely interested; I think you would really like it. ruclips.net/video/huV_yIdxZPY/видео.html

It is Film. They mean that even when they are going through stuff they're always on camera and in the limelight. Their struggles and pain are always public. But knowing RM, the way film is pronounced in Korean could be a double entendre because he's very big on that and has contributed lyrics to most every BTS song. His wordplay is so impressive.
Also, the thing with idol groups is that every member can sing and dance. Those are prerequisites. So the rap line can also sing and dance. And most of the singers in BTS have tried their hand at rapping and want to do that too. Idol groups are multitalented. Even outside of BTS.

Black Swan is def one of our most prized BTS songs. Because it was really a honest take from them on the struggles they were having with this immense success and what that meant to them as ppl who are actually artists. Also as someone whose been a fan from the jump, it’s so interesting to see people who are coming into as a group BTS later, that the more R&B sound is a surprise. BTS does amazing pop (and we love it!) but R&B and hip-hop is their primary/foundational bag as a group which is why they have such a strong and untouchable rapline hip-hop base. The vocal line also contributes a lot when it comes to writing and producing and creating melodies. I am really interested to see you getting a chance to learn more about them as a group! Also you should most def watch the dance practice for the song 👀. If you’re surprised about the rappers dancing here you’re in for it…

Is funny how I also have heard dynamite before, and just knew that it was from bts when I listened to butter. At first I thought they were this general pop genre, like other kpop groups I already had listen to. But god, I was so wrong... In my opinion they can transcend any genres of music, cause they use so much references in their songs, it becomes truly a masterpiece. Its okay to have pop songs like dynamite (which refers strongly to Michael Jackson, I really like it), butter and permition to dance. I think they did those songs to reach more public, but their korean essence is on another level!
Also, the pop songs are so great when you want to dance without thinking of anything.

The theme for this song is “the first death of a dancer is when he stops dancing. And this death is the most painful” It's coming from a quote by Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” BTS talk about how they’re scared of stop loving to make music and they question themselves of what will they do if/when this happens. Or Jimin will stop dancing. It was lately found out that during this song bts actually went through a situation they were describing in Black Swan.
“No song affects me anymore; the heart no longer races when the music starts to play; no longer makes my heart vibrate” They weren’t satisfied with themselves as artists and didn’t feel very happy and enjoyable about their lives. Therefore, this song coveys their struggles and worries about life of an artist and the consequences of an artistic burnout. This MV and also Jimin's contemporary dance is a reference to the movie Black Swan, a ballet dancer

You mentioned at the end that the fear of your music not touching other people or being as impactful is reasonable. But it’s interesting because i don’t necessarily think that is the major concern of black swan. It’s looked at in a very introspective way and rather than being concerned that others wouldn’t enjoy their music, their concern is within themself and whether their own music wouldn’t resonate with them or bring them joy anymore. It’s the fear of losing passion for the thing you love most. The song plays on the concept that an artist dies twice- and the “first death” the rappers keep mentioning is them losing passion for their craft.
    Love seeing your reactions💜

just a small correction. Basically dynamite is not a commercial song it later became so because of its popularity.
after the release of the album Map of the soul 7 came out BTS had planned a big world tour.
    Unfortunately the Cov stopped everything.
They found themselves in a very difficult situation for an artist No more concerts, No more face-to-face contact with their fans.
But they didn't let it get them down, they decided to release dynamite in order to ask us the fans not to let it get us down either.
Even if the lyrics of the song are not very deep the message behind this song is deep.

Dynamite and Butter are pretty low on BTS songs for me, but the sentiment behind them was truly to create something that people could vibe to without deep meanings and just have a break from the global mess we were all in. 1) This beat we believe is one that yoongi put together ! It bears a striking resemblance to one that he had played around with on a video where he reviewed a midi board. The video is up on BangtanTV
    2) Yes, ALL of rapline can sing as well as rapping, dancing, producing, etc
    3) A lot of ot7 BTS music is not strictly pop / isn't pop at all ! That's why we sing the praises of the range they have in sound across all their work xx
    4) The lyric is correct "Film it now" and is commentary on how public their lives are, how sensational and televised every mistakes, misstep, how even their downfall would be in front of a camera; They were feeling burnt out, and had planned to release and tour MOTS7 before completing their military service. Plans changed due to COVID
    5) The title "Black Swan" is based of the theory/metaphor of the same name ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory )
"The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight."
Alongside doolset's blurb about their fears of their own 'first death' as artists & performers and the lyrics of the song itself talking of how the one thing they love more than anything; if it cannot resonate or if they feel nothing by creating, performing etc, if and of that, if music no longer inspires emotion in their hearts that would be their "first death"

Also to address how you were talking about Dynamite sounding more like typical/commercialised pop, Dynamite, Butter, and Permission To Dance were all decided to be done in English to give people easy, uplifting, fun music during the Pandemic. They wanted the tracks to be more accessible commercially to reach a wider audience of people in hopes that the fun of them would help boost morale for as many people as possible because of how grave the pandemic has been.

As far as the Rap Line dancing... J-Hope started as a dancer and learned to rap. Neither RM nor SUGA wanted to dance... they were actually specifically told they wouldn't have to dance when they joined, but in the three years before they debuted... that changed. NOW they both love the dancing, but took some convincing on J-hope's part. :P
"Dynamite" was specifically released during the pandemic to cheer people up so it was bright and poppy on purpose. It's also one of the reasons they kept it in English... so it would be more radio friendly on a global scale and reach more people.

In truth this song touches upon a very serious subject. That many artists are faced with. And sometimes the saddest part is that for so many, it isn't even a choice. It isn't something that is chosen.
For example, what the original Black Swan, speaks towards...
and that is what can be commonly seen as the death of a dancers career.
But in reality it isn't just their career all the time. For many, it can be a sort of death on a much deeper level. It can be a sort of death of part of who they are as a person. Because dancing is more than that to them. It isn't just a job or a hobby, but it is a part of who they truly are, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. A part of who they are down to their very base selves.
I think from what I have learned, some dancers refer to this as a sort of first death. Because in reality, for so many, they truly do lose a part of who they really are, when they can no longer dance, or perform like they used too, after their bodies come to the point where they just can't do it anymore physically.
To me, I think I can undertand many parts of this quite a bit.
In all honesty, it can be such a hard thing to even just think about, or atleast for myself that is how it can seem.
For so many, I eould assume that it all can be such a regretable reality.
A completely dark and unfair truth, that becomes all too real.

"Look at the rappers dancing boyyy~"
😂 long time no see, hope you're doing well! This came out of nowhere haha but I like it.
In terms of recent solo stuff, I recommend RM's Indigo album :D "still life" or "wild flower" have mv's. Or just vibe to it on your own time, no need to react, the album is a vibe. He sings there too!!

I can't believe no one has suggested FAKE LOVE!!! Now that I saw you liked this one, I'm sure you'll like that song too. It's such a good song. And if you want surprises, I feel like "I Need U" will be one for you. It's from 2015, the time they started to get popular.

100% recommend watching and listening to the orchestra version.. it's a masterpiece
this song cuts deep when you are someone who is starting to lose a passion for something that has been a monumental part of your life. I definitely cried when reading the lyrics the first time. But yeah, definitely recommend checking out the orchestra version. truly incredible
but hahah blackswan is so good but also horrrible to start with when you don't know the vocal line LOL. the song was made to kinda blend and distort their voices together, so you won't be able to tell whose voice is whose whatsoever. It's from the album Map of The Soul: 7 (MOTs is based on Carl Jung) and was supposed to be their last album to us before they went to the military after a tour. Unfortunately covid happened and obviously everything was delayed.
As to everyone, I recommend the bts room live 2021 festa to get a feel of their entire discography as a group and also for the other members as well :)!

Check out the MV for j-hope’s ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’ featuring Becky G. The lyrics are in English, Korean, and Spanish. Afterward, you can appreciate the live SoWooZoo performance of the song with all the members of BTS.
