- For the first time in history, Swedish female priests outnumber their male counterparts. In the Nordic country, often hailed as a champion of gender equality, the statistics are clear: as of July, 50.1 percent of priests are women, and 49.9 percent are men.

This report is confusing. The Church of Sweden is not Catholic; it's Lutheran. There is no priesthood in the Lutheran Church worldwide. Why are they using the term "priest?" Am I wrong?

Priest is often just a shorthand way of describing anyone who is in charge of a Christian service, (for instance, if you don't know the correct word to use).
This is Not the Catholic Church. It's probably some kind of Anglican Church or some other Christian sect. As far as the Catholic Church's stance is on the matter as per Pope Francis' decree (Jun 2, 2021) Cannon 1379 "Both a person who attempts to confer a sacred order on a woman, and the woman who attempts to receive the sacred order, incur a latae sententia excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See; a cleric, moreover may be punished by dismissal from the clerical state." The Catholic Church does NOT have female priests.
If I remember correctly, this is not an Anglican Church. Yes, Anglican Churches allow women to become priests, but I am pretty sure the Church of Sweden is Lutheran. And I wonder, if gay marriage is allowed, then why can't women become priests? Many people used to say the Bible did not approve of homosexual marriage (and elements of it are still restricted to this day), but Catholics and Baptists allow gay and lesbian marriage now.

@Aesthetic Did you not read in the description that they were ordained at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, and not an actual Catholic Church. They're not Catholics. Just using the name "catholic". In 2007 the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the authorization of Pope Benedict XVI, decreed the penalty of automatic excommunication against anyone "who attempts to confer a sacred order on a woman, and the woman who attempts to receive a sacred order". Also, the pope actually just came out a few days ago reiterating this penalty. So, all those so-called "priests" are not catholics since they have all been excommunicated. They are only able to call themselves catholics because that name "catholic" has not been trademarked.

Sure the Church of Sweden has low attendance and most of the members stay in the church because it does very good things for the community and not for the religious part, but the women priest part does not make the Sweden Church unchristian. At this point, it seems to be a matter of perspective. Women are made of the same stuff as men, we are all human. Eve was made from one of Adam's ribs, "technically" women are an extension of men, so women should become priests since they are an extension of men. Yes men and women have their differences, but we all are made out of flesh and blood. We all are alive and human which is what matters at the end of the day.

The ban on Women's Ordination came in 642AD at the Council of Laodicea. A disciple or Talmid was the Seminarian of Jesus' time. Mary and Martha were disciples and even their discussions with Christ at Lazarus' funeral pointed to learning theology at His feet. They were disciples to become Rabbis and Prophets and Apostles like their Ravv and Rabbi

@SweatySamurai99 funny thing is that though the Orthodox Catholic and Roman Catholic Communions banned women's Ordination they continued having female clergy in the form of Abbesses/Prioresses (Bishops), Nuns (Priests) and Sisters (Deacons) however without Ordination they could not minister Sacraments.
Funny enough many misinformed Roman Catholics think Protestant Catholic female Ordination has no precedent and not a few of our own Protestant Catholics as well. They fail to understand that the strength of the Early Church was in her gender neutral ordained clergy which enabled it to have a strong women's wing which could weather wave after wave of persecution.

The Catholic Church has female monastic clergy - Abbesses are Bishops, Nuns are Priests, and Sisters are Deacons. They are not ordained so they cannot perform Sacraments but otherwise they perform all other functions of those offices. Protestant Catholics only chose to ordain non-monastic women after your example. I would have preferred they wear Abbess, Nun and Sister habits so Roman Catholics like you will quickly recognise them

You are forgetting that the whole point of Priesthood is the ability to perform the sacraments and most importantly, be in Persona Christi.
1 Timothy 2:12 states, "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." 1 Corinthians 14:34 states, "Let you women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law." That should be enough said.

I'm sure by now that it has been mentioned that despite many similarities this is not Roman Catholic but more likely Lutheran, I would have to admit that the scene is much Catholic except for the Woman clergy. Those who are Lutheran especially in non Lutheran countries may be surprised at the closeness of the two in appearance as Lutheranism has stronger carryovers from Catholicism in many parts of northern Europe.

Can someone please remind me what a definition of Priest is and then take a good look at these women’s doing a job that can only pertain to male and not just any male, it’s a vocation and it’s a call by God, but I don’t remember Jesus with any woman as a disciple, he had women working around him and they stated they wanted to help in any way and follow him but they were often not heard of preaching to anyone. For example, we see the act of Mary his mother often at prayer and remaining Holy, not once did she get in the way of Jesus, she was often at prayer, like our nun do today and have done for decades.

The female priest interviewed was earlier this year made the vicar in the inner-city parish to which the church in the clip belongs. The younger, then, priest candidate who reads a text is now ordained and is a minister in another parish in northwest Stockholm. I myself go to this church, almost, every week for a lunchtime concert. Greetings from Stockholm. :)

This is might be an error in translation. In Swedish the word "Präst" sounds like Priest, but in the English speaking world, a Lutheran church leader is called "Pastor". Also, the young lady at the end is using the word "Picture" but in English you'd use "Image".
Ironically, women might actually be better suited to the clergy than men. This is an area more dependent on verbal talents than either math of physical strength. Thus, when discrimination is removed, it could become a kind of "women's job." It is really not surprising that most clergy in the Church of Sweden are female.

I am Swedish Danish descent! I have been to church with a woman Lutheran minister and had a bad experience with her. I have visited some of these old churches in Sweden, but I will never stay for church services with a female minister. I might just return to my historic pagan belief!!!

I was born into a Catholic family, we left for a few decades and went back in the 80's when I though there were to be major changes, as did many others.
It took another 12 years of hoping and then realizing it would not happen. I slowly pulled away after the major exposure of abuses and the faithful Catholics having to sell off property to pay for sex abuse cases.
Yes, those who were abused should have had restitution of some kind, but the Clergy and the Vatican should have dug into their own coffers and not from the hard work and money to build churches from the laity.
It is shameful. And the recent twitter post of the Pope for people to start having babies and stop having pets as substitutes (para) is a slam again against Catholic women and children everywhere. Many who exist in abject poverty in large numbers in third world countries.
Thank you for your voice of reason that does follow the path of what it says in scripture, while knowing what is to be followed and what not.

Female are referred to as priestesses, and Christianity (and Judaism) doesn't have them as the priestess is a sign of a pagan faith, not Christianity. Also note, these are not Catholic churches, this would be either Anglican or Lutheran.

If you're gonna visit just remember to always stay away from Malmø, Göteborg and always remain away from the outskirts of the cities. What emptied our Church is that the political party holding the position as government once upon a time declared thatour church needs democracy and implemented elections which their party participates in. They have placed outspoken atheists in positions of power following their party line (secular party). Their strategy went from the abolishing of the bishops to trying to control them. They wanted to promote “general atheist religiosity” with their own power phrases being pushed (in public debate, the church itself have everything from extremely liberal liberals to extremely conservative and everything in between. They want the church to support them in public debate, what goes on in church is irrelevant to them (as a socialist party they are inherently anti religion and very few of them attend church. The public image differs a lot from the religious life within them. Personally I respect every person ordained that preaches the true gospel, for us it’s not that important what gender a priest has, being a good Christian priest comes higher in priority. Most prefer a female priest over a male government puppet and vice versa. Christians support christians combating the governmental power’s attempt to replace christianity with a religious view of social democrat ideology. Yes, the party controlling the state uses “democracy” to assert power through mobilizing non christian voters to control that the church never oppose the government or the social “democratic” party in public statements. People in Sweden who are secular actually doesn’t know this is considered violating the basic human right known as freedom of religion.
