I always seal my wooden rings with epoxy; it gives it a nice shine and it acts to stabilize it and keep it from cracking.
but does the wet wood effect appear?
Dashing Axe you can use a stain for that if it doesn’t work or if you aren’t sure about it

I would recommend you do a trade off of big or complicated projects, with an occasion of some easier one's that the viewer can also do at home with there own tools

Are there any tricks for getting the edges down to the right thickness? I started a similar process about a week ago and am struggling to get the edges right. Does it just take practice with the sand paper by hand?

Thanks for sharing. In regards to your question. I would prefer simple projects like the wood rings. I do not have a full workshop, but have some basic power tools like a flat sander, a drill, a dremel, and a saber saw. The simple projects are things I feel I could make. The more complex projects using a lot of good power tools are impressive but less personally inspiring.

i don't think drilling a hole should create that much smoke.
michael b I’m pretty sure he should’ve also had protection for his mouth and nose, a bandana at the least and a respirator at the most.
it is because the drill head is burning the wood with friction, you should use a small amount of water or an oil for it
Depends on the type of wood. Some are oilier/sappier. Most oils would make it worse, and water stands the risk of swelling your wood and destabilizing the grain, leaving it prone to cracking. Stabilizing it in an infusing resin might reduce the smoke, but make nastier particulates. Basically take your pick of less than ideal methods!
mermaid of course but wood needs time to soak it up. i use a little amount of water or an oil depends on the type of wood of course and i got no problem! wood has global rules yeah but everyone has their own style hahah!

To speed up the process a bit more, you can use a true hole saw for the outer diameter (almost all the way through but not quite) then get the inner diameter with a paddle bit (all the way through) then hit it again with the outer diameter hole saw.

You were running that drill press WAYYYYY to fast. It should not be smoking like that. When you use forstner bits you need to slow that bad boy down.
