there's a thread on the competitivewow subreddit with a google doc with steps to improve performance. one takeaway i saw was that heal prediction on elvui can eat fps, not sure by how much, but if you're not healing thats probably useless. another thing i read elsewhere is that no matter what ui you're using unless its default blizzard, the blizzard raidframes are always loaded. ive heard people disable the elvui raidframes and edit the blizzard ones to look similar to elvui without the performance loss. thanks for the videos guy, hope this helps others

    Thank you again
When it comes to details i remember asking the question about how big of a difference 0.20 to 3 sec update interval made but didn't get any answers.
In any case i've been using 3 sec update for 1 year and most of the time i'm on the Deaths window anyway, i only swap to dps between wipes

    • @flamaniswow
      @flamaniswow 3 месяца назад +1

Update interval only changes the update rate on the visual. Actual data collection has to happen in real time and is the most performance intensive part. Visual updates are a small part of the equation and usually just matters when you hit your cpus limit. You can turn off animate bars if you want which will probably help performance. But that's still just the visuals ofc.

Part 1 of this video had a great affect on me. I was determined to find all the things tanking my FPS. I found that graphics settings were tanking my framerate more than everything else after I got rid of all the Weakaura models.
I watched a Quazil graphics settings video and fixed all the framerate issues. Even something simple like lowering the liquid detail significantly affected how much the frame rate was affected.
Thank you for the video. It made me do the work necessary to make playing the game easier and more fun.

I did some investigation on my ElvUI after your previous video and here is what I found:
First of all, let me say that when I disable ElvUI completely, I get like +15 fps when in combat, so there is 100% something wron with that addon.
Now, I found that if you disable PORTRAITS in ElvUI (they exist as optional settings in nameplates/UnitFrame etc) you get a performance boost, that must be related to your previous video observation about models. I had portrait enabled in my target unitframe and when I disabled it, suddeny my fps got better.
I hope more ElvUI users see this comment and also push the ElvUI devs to further investigate their addon performance in general, I love ElvUI and I dont want to replace it
Additionally, I used a performance check addon (CPU usage etc) in-game and I found out another addon that utilizes CPU aggresively for no reason, that is MegaMacro.

ElvUi Dev put out a post on how to fix performance issues with right elvui settings here:
    x.com/Luckyone961/status/1843256715917050331
Please continue commenting and giving feedback on other addon experiences or issues you've found affected your performance. I'm still collecting feedback for more things to test, and pass onto blizzard as well as more things I can maybe help with such as going over settings of game or addons.
I'll be uploading a part 3 going over settings that kill fps, and how best tricks to getting most performance out of game, when you've already culled in or disabled addons. That was also gonna be in this video but my alarm got set off during recording and then things got chaotic so I ended up editing that mess out and i'll record settings in a separate video. probably for best anyways as it was nearly a 40 minute video, best split (and probably restructured) to not be as long and more quick going through settings anyways.
When I go over settings though I plan to be more in depth and technical than most but still in simple terms because I have a greater understanding of engine than most and can really help with tweaks most others who do graphics settings videos miss.

Even after Blizzards UI overhaul, stuff like Plater just is too powerful to entirely drop, especially when you play competetively, same goes for WeakAuras, Blizzards UI still does a poor Job tracking Buffs/Procs and certain other things, so the only thing we can do is Optimize the hell out of those AddOns.

I stumbled across a Elden Ring video where disabling cpu 0 boosts fps massively. I tried it for wow and my stuttering is completely gone. You can do this with task manager while wow is running, but this doesnt persist. You can use process lasso or process governer to make it persistent. I think there is also a cvar ingame called processaffinitymask but I dont know which value is required to disable cpu 0.

Long story which I feel is my civic duty to post here: I’ve been obsessed with the cpu optimization game ever since DF S4 pre patch when my fps tanked. Prior to that I was running wow on a default 8 graphics setting with nothing additional tweaked and was locked at 60fps 1080p (due to monitor display rate) and would experience NO DIPS in frame rate with the exception of valdrakken and certain hectic world events. Raiding was fine. This is with a ryzen 5600 and rx 6600, a budget gaming pc.
Since then, around TWW release, I’ve upgraded my monitor to 1440p ultrawide and have had to significantly decrease my graphics quality, which I was willing to do because hey, it’s 1440p ultrawide on a budget build, so what do you expect? But then after playing other games and not having to adjust my quality at all I started to scratch my head. It didn’t make sense that wow, a 20 year old game, was dipping so hard. I was running elvui, details, plater, raider.io, dbm, WA, bagnon, tomtom, and a bunch of handynotes, as well as other various addons I can’t remember. Since then I’ve cut down to:
    -Dbm + dungeon pack
    -Shadowed unit frames
    -Plater
Details w/ 3 sec update time (I’m a tank so idrc and don’t check it super often anyway, just between pulls)
-weak auras with quaziis DH pack and causese TWW dungeons (no raid, I haven’t been raiding much and if I do I install it and uninstall after)
    -cursor trail
And that’s it. And I’m averaging around 100-115mb addon memory. CPU usage is like 35mb/s. And I’m still looking for ways to cut it down! But, when I was running all that crap before it was 250mb addon memory. I might delete SUI too if I find out it’s costing me frames, and maybe I’ll even switch to skada instead of details. But yeah, unfortunately with the state of the game now, especially if you’ve got a middle of the road CPU and can’t upgrade it, definitely go minimal if you want the frames! If you can play without plater, do it! Unfortunately I’m addicted to it, but yeah. And if you can play without class WA packs I’d recommend that too, as currently that’s about 50% of my addon cpu usage. End rant lol

Ive not yet watched the video. But I have a 160(locked) steady fps in Timewalking dungeons (wrath) which are obviously not taxing without addons, but when I enable all of them I lose like 50-60 fps. Most of my addons are 'lightweight' and I can't seem to find the culprit to my much lower fps.. The weakauras I use do not use "models" or backgrounds, its mostly just text, or an icon displayed. Any ideas?
    Addons that I use:
Advanced interface Options (mostly for changing the lag tolerance, less delay on keypresses)
BattleGroundEnemies (easier to track targets in battlegrounds)
BetterBlizzFrames & BetterBlizzPlates (unit nameplates & buffs+debuffs on targets)
Capping (timer addon primarily for battlegrounds / Blitz)

Diminish (Diminishing Return tracker on nameplates)
FrameSort (sets u as bottom always regardless of who ever is in your group)
    Gladius (arena frames/tracks DR, trinkets)
    Handynotes TWW + Dragonglyphs
    jButtonFlash (flashy keybutton presses)
    Leatrix Maps (map addon)
OmniAuras (Like BigDebuffs, but also tracks whenever u use a defensive on partyframes/raidframes)
    OmniBar (Tracks enemy cooldowns)
    OmniCD (Tracks party cooldowns)
tullaRange (makes ur actionbuttons red if ur not in range)
MoveAny (lets u move frames, I use it mainly to move the LFG eye icon when you queue for a dungeon or BG / arena) to the minimap.
Shadowlands Micro Menu (makes ur micromenu, characterpanel/achievement etc looking like it did prior to Dragonflight)
    Weakauras:
Mes Arena CD's (audio & tracks what cooldowns people press, mostly in arena)
Externals on You (if a healer uses an external on me, regardless of setting)
Teea Danger Alerts (tracks cooldowns in arena, and who they are targeting)
Healer CC (shows whenever my healer is in a crowdcontrol, primarily in arena)
Edit: I do have bugsack, but I really don't know how to read it. I have tons of mention when it comes to Advancedinterfaceoptions, Diminish, Gladius, BlizzardAuctionbar?! BattlegroundEnemies etc.

Yes and no. Wow is certainly not coded to leverage the core count modern cpus have. it generally has enough work scheduled to keep 2-3 cores busy. the problem is what parts of code are multi threaded or not. the graphics engine generally is to an extent but the addon/ui threads are not. the problem, the ui/addon threads run on the graphics threads. so the engine is massive bogged down...by the UI. including the base Ui. but most certainly compounded by addons. this means that even if the scheduler for actual graphics is multi threaded, it gets caught up on the UI bogging everything down.
this was supposed to be fixed for dragonflight, but was canceled cause pushing DF out 1 month earlier was better for shareholders. and this likely won't change anytime soon since MS isn't much better in terms of who they cater to.
But long short of it is, we as user have to deal with it, and tips given are best way cause we need to mitigate Ui load as much as possible for the renderers sake

Im sure what people do ElvUI "design" like dogshit and get dropping fps. Seriously, its like WA models. When we start discus about that huge addons like WA and Elv, we must keep in mind what single part of them can be problem, not all. Disable 3d models, increase refresh period, turn off smooth bars - you're awesome and get about zero percentage impact on your cpu via elv.
Srsly, you're not deleting addon weakauras cuz one of auras dropping frames, right? So why you wanna delete elv if something just missconfiged?

Some commenters said they deleted it and used something diff and I wasn't gonna disagree with their results or wants. that said I'm pretty sure I put the developer response in video description and in one of comments to outline they have responded with what specific settings are problematic.
I do think in future it'd probably benefit them greatly to add warnings to their UI about the specific offending settings such as "this enables x, but has performance impact"
But yeah i never blamed weak auras or elvui for being bad addons and said more than likely they're accessing something specific that isn't performant.

For me, the biggest impact on WoW performance is definitely resolution. It's not just about graphics performance, on the contrary, with a higher resolution, it should go more to the GPU than to the CPU, and that doesn't happen in Wow.
    I play 2/4K ultra-wide and it's a total disaster even with a high-end setup.
Wow unfortunately has a terribly outdated engine and addons/weak auras don't help it. The fact that the game does not include DLSS speaks volumes for its status.
When I set the resolution scale to 1080p, I don't actually experience any FPS drops.

the game not having DLSS or FSR 2/3 or XeSS definitely holds it back. But it does have FSR 1 and it's super useful to pushing higher resolutions. FSR 1 does have a bug on some windows machines though where it doesn't work or actually tanks performance though. But if you aren't on one of those machines then if you have a 4k machine I suggest setting render scale to 75% and setting sampling to FSR 1.0. it'll get a nice performance boost without introducing any notable artifacting or shimmering that you typically see with more aggressive FSR. it'd basically of high balanced/low quality preset in most other games. you could also try 66 or 50^% render scale to push more frames but at that point you may lose sharpness on grass edges

Yeah some fancy animations and calculation stuff like having plater or details update frequently definitely introduce performance issues, but most issues are caused by the lack of good performance in the stock api/ui. So shifting blame off blizzard because existing problems are made worse by addons isn't productive. Hold blizzard more accountable. @@mysticalos Ofc the game is old, and over time it feels like the engine hasn't modernized enough, to me. For instance, I get more fps on my Mac mini with a cpu test than my pc. Despite my pc having much more cores etc. For a 2024 game it's awfully dependent on a single thread and as a result my gpu is barely utilized at all -- especially i the cities. Cyberpunk uses every thread I have, a true modern game in that sense. Blizzard could and should fix it, but they won't. Not saying it's easy but he, they're the ones receiving subscriptions for a pay2win game, even mobile game developers are jealous on how they pulled that one AND their fans being low iq enough to not see the connection of buying gold with buying progress aka pay2win.
And addons, while not all (like one bag) wreak havoc on gameplay as well, like weakauras, DBM, etc, despite not all doing it ALL should be banned, no addons. I haven't really played since bfa (besides some benchmark runs), but I remember from BFA that people could not heroic or even normal raid without them, legitimately could not survive a minute even. And now the 20th anniversary raid in LFR we wipe lmao.
The average wow player is so bad at the game, it's incredible, ofc I am as well now, haven't touched it in years. & the addons are essentially telling them what to do and playing for them, they are light cheats and for that reason alone should be banned all together. But also because it's very off putting to new / returning players -- which is me. Which is why the retail wow fanbase only shrinks (and becomes more hardcore as a result) and has to milk their remaining fans harder and harder, ie "early" access, 80euro mounts etc.
Banning all addons should also incentive Blizzard to make their ui / fights not the mess it is today. It won't happen and ultimately, I don't really care. With the dumbest decision ever at the end of Legion to introduce ilvl scaling and later level scaling and even later fully removing player progress (levels, ilvls etc) it basically died.
It is not an mmo, it's not an rpg, it has a crap story, boomer hotkey and laggy gameplay, it's pay2win, I mean these retail developers are just riding on the success of others, good for them I guess.

@@mysticalos i also play in 4k with all setting maxed out, I've just capped my fps at 80fps. More so for smooth obs recording. Noticed when my fps settings were higher than 80fps, I had very choppy playback with my 4k recordings.

@@theduncanthetank i used elvui since MoP and recently gave it up. im still coping with the loss and quality of life features from elvui but overall i feel unshackled and free. and fps inside a raid environment is just vastly better.

ironically that's how I always said it, but as i said in other videos comments, like 3 people kept correcting me for saying it wrong when i was saying it like model, cause they told me it's pronounced differently when describing the WA feature versus the context you might find for model airplanes or fassion model or 3d model or wahtever. I dunno. i was probably just being trolled by guildies at a point but they kept telling me it's mode el not mod el so in video i said it differently. if it was a troll it was successful 🤣
