    I have been asked a number of times questions like "How come you're not a jeweler?" or "You have so much good stuff, why don't you open a business and sell?". As Jason pointed out there is a lot of behind the scenes work that never stops. I enjoy cutting and polishing rocks/cabochons and I enjoy making them into jewelry. I've retired so I can enjoy my hobbies. I don't want to start another full time job! Also, people need to do the math if they think they can survive cutting cabs and make money at it. How much did the original stone cost? How much did the rock saw cost? Or, how much did the slab cost? How much did the cabbing machine cost? How many hours did it take you to cut that stone? I have asked these question of multiple people and not one of them had ever thought about it. All they are thinking is I can sell this 18x22 cab for $20. Well, then you are making about $1.25 per hour! Yes, I know a lot of the equipment is an investment, but power, water, oil, blades, and wheels are not free. And then there's the maintenance of the equipment, and so on. For me, this is and will always be a hobby. However, if someone sees something I've done and offers me a realistic price? Well? I have to support my hobby somehow. Although, I do have a few pieces that I will probably never part with as they should be in a museum somewhere.

      How one values their own time is also really important and how its weight against the international market. I have seen some amazing cabs coming out of international cutting shops that are $3-$5 for something with a perfect polish is almost impossible for me or you to beat.
      People just have no idea of how hard it can be to turn a profit of $2000 a month on a rock business.

      New subscriber here . I absolutely love the collection and I want to go find some gems and get to know people that have claims so I can get a few samples for particulars if at all possible I would be absolutely honored and blessed. I may start up a campaign to help fund me a trip to somewhere perhaps invited to get to know more about the likewise hobby and or interest. ❤

    Fun and valuable interview. Collecting a piece yourself makes the piece special despite its monetary value. It's the experience, the thrill of discovery, and the memory that creates "the bond." It becomes sad when you can not do it anymore.

    Thank you. Very well done. This video has been a total pleasure to watch and to hear honest stories about the real world of business. I can't wait to get back to the West Desert of Utah, just a couple of hours away. I also appreciate the thoughts on claiming, since I had an Uncle who had a claim where I spent summers digging. I have considered staking several claims, but the world is different now from back in the 1960's when the claim was active. Thanks again, this is the real deal when it comes to rocks, gems and minerals.

    That was a fascinating video! I remember the CBA video, and his shop then to now. Its drastically different now. Its huge and infinitely more space! Its great to hear that he is doing so well and i think its wonderful. And that was a very informative video, for those that are looking to purchase a claim, or want to register a claim in an area that they may have found a certain mineral in past visits. And a placer claim sounds like it is definitely the way to go. That video was very valuable and informative, and a good resource to have for future questions. And thank you for the video and having him on as a guest again. He is an exciting and engaging guest that people can instantly like and he has a physical shop where if you are ever in the area, you can stop in and check out his collection and it sounds like that soon to follow even a website for online sales of his wonderful rock and minerals. Thank you Jared for this video and interview. He is a great and engaging guest.

      @@CurrentlyRockhounding I had plans to record some stuff this month. I took all of July off, and had several camping, and rockhounding trips planned, as well as an annual backpacking trip some buddies and I do. Unfortunately 5 days in to the month I tore my meniscus pretty badly, and have mostly been laid up in bed since.
      I can’t imagine my content will be anything that catches your fancy when I do start posting. Lol. You’re light years ahead of me in regards to experience and knowledge. I’ve been collecting most of my life (I’m 37), but only as a hobby and therapy 😆.
      Starting out it’ll be more vlog style, sharing tips and tricks, showing off my finds, and then some lapidary stuff as my skills improve.
      I’ve got a pretty fun idea for an online shop though, and I think it’ll be something Rockhounds of all ages and skill levels will be able to enjoy and appreciate. Gotta keep it on the hush for now as it’s still a work in progress, but I’m excited and hopeful about it!

    Nice vid, and showcasing beautiful agate. I spent a few years in Oregon and spent plenty of time collecting Beach Agates. Was able to do a little Sunstone finding, and a couple trips to Opal Hunting in the Virgin Valley. A few trips to Mitchell area/Ochoco for thundereggs, and fossils nearby. Unfortunately I left the geological gifts of the Western States behind. I've been living in the Philippines for over 3 yrs now. The Gold is out of reach at the moment, and outside of Jadeite, Garnet, Jasper, a smithering of opal, not too much where I live. The center part of the islands and down south are better. Anyways, good hunting! 👍👇👀

    I have a few questions not necessarily about this video. Do you have a video about you built your slab saw? Does the blade in the slab saw spin slow or fast because from the audio it sounds slow but I could be wrong. And lastly, does can your homemade lapidary arbor be made with any powerful enough motor or do you need a specific kind of motor?

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  Год назад +1

      These are some really big questions.
      Most lapidary machines spin rather slow compared to woodworking machines and often its around 1800rpm max but for saws depending on the size they must spin slower and slower because the bigger the blade the greater the surface feet per minute.
      Getting an AC motor between 1/3hp and 1hp will doing a fine job for an arbor.

    • @getyourbone
      @getyourbone 7 месяцев назад

      The reason why most lapidary equip. Is not direct direct drive is because of speed…
      Use a pulley and belt setup for simplicity
      you can change the speed(think 10 speed bicycle🤷🏻‍♂️). By changing pulley size to Increase or decrease size of pulley and you can alter the speed of the blade…unless you go with dc power(or,or,or but won’t go there…)
      YES, lapidary equipment needs to operate slower but you match it to the particular material…
