Mary Ann, I am so sad that you had a bad experience. We are all human, and sometimes a Stephen Minister can be a bad apple, but we are not all like that. After being in this ministry over 20 years, I have heard hundreds of comments from people who tell me what a difference a Stephen Minister has made in their lives. We work hard as a team of Stephen Ministers, Stephen Leaders, and small group facilitators to be sure that our focus is on the needs of the Care Receivers. Confidentiality (not gossip) is the root of our work. We have signs at our small group Supervision sessions reminding us to focus on the RELATIONSHIP not the CIRCUMSTANCES, and that "We are the CAREgivers; God is the CUREgiver. I pray that you will find the caring, compassionate help you need from SOMEONE, and that someday you will forgive the Stephen Minister who came into your life and failed to do her job as God would have wanted her to do it.

yes, sometimes bad ones slip thru the system. When our SL stepped down, a very smart, caring, upright woman, a small group of them infiltrated the ministry (gossipers, which we overheard during church service). What do you do? Report them? Donno. Unfortunately, a small bad crop can effectively kill the ministry and create a lasting impression. I lay it at the pastor. We could see the personality issues immediately. Someone in leadership lacks the necessary discernment. It can be an issue, and a dangerous one at that.
