(1) how many airbags are there and where are they located, and is there a difference between the cabrio and the coupe? (2) lastly, is this a good car for short people?
As a Smart Fortwo owner I can tell you that, yes.. people will ignore you but you also can fit in small spaces in traffic where others can’t. The cloth seats allow more head space than the leather option. I had to change my option from leather to cloth when ordering one after sitting in both.
20:58. This is such a sad truth. People with small cars are rarely taken seriously and are bullied where I live. Like, not everyone wants a giant car or a sedan. Not everyone who buys a small car is poor or useless. Not everyone wants big cars. I think this car is PERFECT for a crowded, tight city, by the way. More people should buy cars like this if they only travel in tight streets and parking lots. I do treat all road users equally no matter the size of their cars, and I never judge anyone based on what car brand they drive either, though I get judged negatively just because of the brand I drive. The roads are filled with angry people, and I think if you are a short-tempered or easily pissed off to a point were you have violent thoughts when something does not go your way you should not drive. Sadly, it is survival of the fittest. Contrary to popular believe, that and aggressive behaviour causes accidents and deaths on the road. But anyway, great review! ❤
Lightning Farron I live in NYC, 6ft tall, & no one makes fun of me and my Smart Car. Ppl actually get surprised when they see me driving and I let ppl seat in my car to show them that the car is roomy. Also, my car is all black with LED lights so it makes it look cool.
Imagine how you feel riding a bicycle on the road (which is perfectly legal and intended by the law and road rules here in Germany) - you become "invisible" to any car leaving a parking spot, or driving from a side road onto the road your're riding on. And will be honked at, to use to sidewalk (which, conversely, is illegal to be used for riding a bicycle here in Germany, with a specific financial fine attached to such an activity - so there is no room for discussion - the law is very clear about that) in case some car driver had to use their brakes, just because they could not overtake you immediately, so they "lost" 5 seconds on their half-an-hour ride in their metal box. I've had several car drivers, who, after overtaking me, and having to slow down and come to halt at the next crossing, intentionally drove as much to the right side of the road, as they could, to make sure, I will not attempt to drive by their car, on my bicycle.
Great job, Thomas and John. You really opened up the vistas of this micro car! I've owned two 2006 Smarts with all their shortcomings, and swore I'd never buy another, however, this electric version means: instantaneous throttle response, linear acceleration throughout the speed range, no more balky shifts, no clutch motor to fail, no expensive oil changes, no waste gate to clog with carbon, no timing chain to fail, no halogen headlamps to regularly burn out, no stinky diesel fuel to dispense, and no growly diesel motor with police car siren (turbo charger). This package really piques my interest. I do like the glass top coupe -- though I do have the rule of not eating inside my car. I'll have to take and E.V. Smart for a test drive. I like your clean style which the whole family can enjoy. I'll be watching for further reviews in the future.
Unique looks very hard not to be taken in by the Smart ForTwo’s charm. Beautiful small car + electric powertrain and tiny dimensions make it perfect for urban. It's a great second car choice. Many thanks Thomas and John excellent review !

Hey Thomas, let's be clear: you get "invited" for exclusive first drive riding events by the manufacturers, which often take place in holiday locations. That influences your view on the car. Then, a nice guy of the manufacturer introduces you to the top spec car and puts a strong focus on the strengths of the car - which influences your thoughts on the car. And on top of all, IF you make a disastrous review of a car, that manufacturer will liekely not invite you again or will guarantee you that you will be among the first journalists who may upload the review (which is a disaster for your channel). Then, they tell you the date when you are allowed to post the video, because, you know what, the manufacturer controls its own marketing strategy through you. If you are not even aware how influencial that is and you can't differentiate this to free journalism and you even justify that in front of your audience, it is very abvious what happens here. Come on, "independent"? Are you kidding me? Influence on journalists has most often been subliminal.
Oh, and as you talk of transparency: what exactly did smart pay for you for this review? My guess: flights, hotel, food, maybe some gimicke marketing presents and maybe the taxi. But yeah, please tell us transparently.

32:15 So true! That will lead to the fact, that people with less money won´t be able to buy a now expensive small car anymore, because they tend to be all electric! VAG does the same with up, citigo and mi! It´s great about this channel, that You mention those obscure strategies of the manufacturers!
Can you spell "Aston Martin Cygnet"? ;) Not a single soul bought that insane $100,000 micro car, and Aston Martin knew that. It was purely because they had to to say "Look EU! We make eco friendly cars too and now we are within your requirements :)"
@@Akinto710 Some things have changed since then, they have to sell those cars and from 2021 on the real life perfomance will be used to measure the fleet economy and emissions.
Sorry but that assumption is wrong. The main reason why small cars will only be available in an electric version is the vehicle weight compensation for CO2 emissions. The average EU emission target is 95 g CO2 /km but that value is adjusted for the vehicles weight. For the VW up! (980 kg) the emission target is 82 g / km. This equals 3,5 litres of 95 ROZ / 100 km which is basically impossible. The only way to reach those low numbers with a combustion engine would be a diesel or hybrid, both of which are way too expensive technologies for such a small car (and take up too much space). As far as tweaking the fleet emissions goes, selling an EQC is much more valuable for Mercedes than a Smart, as it increases the fleet's average vehicle weight, thereby increasing the emission target. The smart also counts as a zero emission vehicle, but due to it's low weight it not only reduces the fleet emissions but also lowers the target value. As for VW, they are doing quite the opposite of Mercedes. Mercedes has only done cosmetic changes on the smart, but kept the price and battery size (really, really bad value for the money in 2020 market). VW have barely touched the design but instead have *doubled the battery size and lowered the price* . You can get a *fully specced* Citigo for about 17k€ in Germany.
That's another very important aspect yes, but it doesn't make my statement false. Another reason is that it would be too expensive to build the small vehicles according to the emission laws you just stated. There would be no margin left for the manufacturer.
Thanks for the super video. Makes me all the more excited thinking about the arrival of my Edition 1 next week. Magic to be having a non-polluting, super-cute car second car that avoids those all too present parking spot worries and can turn around on itself. Perfect for local journeys in the city and village. With my mileage I only expect to charge it up once or twice a week.
My Smart EQ Edition 1 arrived yesterday - COVID-19 prompted delivery to my house on a huge transporter. It looks great with the Brabus features making it special. And the inside is super light with the glass roof and the leather seats are really comfortable. The suspension is decent for a car with such a short wheelbase, the steering has feel and the turning circle is so small that it has you laughing out loud - and people look on in awe. But what really surprised me is how nippy it is and how much fun to drive - I was seriously amazed ! I TOTALLY LOVE IT 😊
Great Review as always Thomas. "Guests on stage!" Shame ride is so rough, whilst UK city street surfaces are so torn up and rough. 30:25 yes, I love a heated steering wheel, too. And I'd pick the cabrio - if only the whole thing wasn't so expensive. Many thanks, team.
At 10:00 minutes, obviously, the Tailgate storage compartment in the Coupé is NOT for the Roof-Sidebars of the Convertible! 🧐🤔 In my Electric SMART this useful storage space accommodates the portable 110 - 230 Volt AC Charging Unit/Cable. Within ~1 to 2 hours the Electric SMART will be all charged up for going home🏡 again! 🙂🤷🏼♂️
Just like the two slots into which the luggage cover's bar fits when it's in its normal position, there are in fact two slots down below on floor level where the bar is supposed to be stowed when you need the extra space. I'm sure many people will leave it there for the duration of their ownership, but in my previous generation smart I find it useful to be able to close my luggage space at times, and at others to remove the cover and stow it down below. The forward-flipping passenger seat is a godsend as well! I've loaded the most amazing stuff in mine just because of the ability to make use of that, for instance a full-size filing cabinet at one time and two 1,9 m long planks just a couple of weeks ago, using some bubble wrap to protect the seat back and the underside of the passenger-side dashboard, and a folded towel over the luggage cover bar.
You give some of the best detailed car reviews on RUclips, which is why I subscribed to your channel. How tall are you exactly? I’m 6’4” and I like to watch your reviews for practicality purposes
Love your videos - and great work for car enthusiasts, many thanks indeed. By the way Thomas, at 38:29 - it might have been fake fur, or is there no difference?! Best wishes.
for a tall person 1.85 or more, the telescopic steering wheel adjustment is vital. Also I never see the reviewers talking about the foot rest. Another very important part of the car. Me, being a big man, I found out that Japanese cars are designed for small Japanese people and my foot, 46 size, never feet in the foot rest. Also happened to me in Ford models but never had problems with german models like VW or BMW. This means that Germans design cars for bigger people hence for Europeans. That's why I stick with german brands being a big person.
The drivetrain of the motor and batteries is as old/outdated as the first gen Nissan Leaf. It's only bright spot is the 22kW 3-phase charging, in Europe only.
First, check out what the leather industry is trying to do: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html Below this video you'll find more resources in the pinned comment to explain the topic even more in-depth.
Anyone with a decent pay, obviously. 22k Euros is extremely low price for this. That's nothing! A University student with a job could get this. I am projecting with that last point.
I don't know. I'm planning to buy this - this is right now the cheapest electric car you can buy. And it's fun in the city. For a city car you should consider other cars only if you need more than two seats...
if they give this thing decent power and range, like 50kwh and 140hp, this would be a blast. The battery tech might just now have gotten to a point where this is possible.
Here in the USA I have a 2019 EQ base level. It’s hard to find Smart EQ accessories here. Such as the headlights and taillights in video. Also things for facelift like grills, badges, etc. Also are the ApplePlay entertainment radios available and swappable? Where can I find upgrades online? Can such upgrades be purchased online from Europe and is there anything about USA models design or build that would prevent such facelifts using European parts? I have spoken to local Mercedes dealerships but - since they don’t sell new Smarts over here anymore - they act like they know nothing. Thanks!
It doesn't matter - nobody buys a smart car if they're going more than 70 miles a day. This is a bold move by smart but these cars are selling well in my city.
It might sound as a silly question, though im curious do the brake lights come on during regenerative braking to warn other road users behind you? as sometimes decelartions could be quite significant. I heard that they do in Tesla cars but i was wondering if there s like a standardize way of implementing it.
depends on regeneration torque. There is a certain law for that. During normal rolling recuperation in the recuperation mode when you are not using the brake pedal, this is not strong enough for that with the smart
When they announced it with basically unchanged specs I couldn’t really understand it. And I still can’t really understand it as a Smart EQ owner. The car is decent. Not spectacular but decent. But if they’re wanting to sell cars, then it really needs to have an option for a bigger battery and CCS charging. It’s going to be hard to sell a car with 60 miles of range in big numbers no matter how many public chargers there are. If the plan is to sell it to people who only drive locally, like me most of the time, then I think that will eventually fail. This will be my last car and I’m going to swap it for an eBike at the end of the year. And I think many other people will come to that same decision. Seeing as many cities are going to be blocking their centres to cars in the coming years, the idea of a city car will be destroyed. One thing I like that I didn’t realise at first is that they changed the centre console and put the USBs at the front rather than where the armrest is. This is so much better. And the cup holders are adaptive which is also long overdue. And of course Apple CarPlay. All of these things would have been great 2 years ago when I got mine. But at least people now will have a better time.
I think it is good that Smart drop combustion options. Ideal for modern cities, better for product design, and their piston engines were a bit rubbish anyway.
Great review. Thomas, why you don't test the Toyota IQ? I would like to buy one but I noticed here in Europe there are only a few of them. I don't want to have problems and waiting long time for spare parts if they are not made in EU.
No one bought the electric smart because of the price, and now they kill the petrol car and leave the price the same on the EQ. What are they planning, to sell 10 of them?
Mercedes should have used the drive stalk like in the BMW i3 and got rid of the center console stick shift and used that space for center console deep pocket storage. Just sayin...
You mention New York but the problem is these vehicles are not available anymore in the United States and very few Mercedes dealers work on them. I live in Michigan in not one single Mercedes dealer is authorized to work at any of those smart EQ Vehicles
~16kWh battery - what to fast charge? With 22kW charging (which is basically everywhere) the charge is about 30 minutes. I don't think an expensive DC fast charger would've worth it.
@@isuller DC fast charger is not in cars, but having a small battery with faster charging Capacity makes long trips doable, and better efficiency for daily drives... as it is, with a 16kWh if you're lucky that's 100km highway, having to wait 30mn every hour is a no no
@@seb. this is a city car, not meant to be used for longer trips. For any other car the DC fast charger means 30-60 minutes charging times. Which the Smart can do with a simple 22kW AC charger. And the car itself has to support the fast charging - so it is in the car too, making it more expensive.
@@isuller many people own at most one car... having more than that won't help with resources and climate issues 😉 your comparing apple to oranges time to fill isn't relevant, time to travel a given distance (including charging time) is the right measure. For ICE, it's like saying I can do 2000km with a tank if you don't know its size... doesn't tell much
@@seb. that's true. In that case Smart is not your car. And it doesn't matter if it is electric or not: it is not meant to be an intercity car... But if you have to cars - like we do - Smart is the perfect second car.
I have a 2019 eq which is the newest year you can get in the U.S. Smart pulled out in 2019, but 17m range! wow mines 55m range and from one end of city of Los Angeles to the other is over 50 miles travel distance, and you pretty much have to use the FWY's to get around and they are the worst in the world drivers are monsters will even pull out guns and shoot at you sometimes even thru their own windows! yes they are that CRAZY. So you really have to plan out any trip with chargers in minds fortunately they are putting in news ones all the time tho less free ones but still very cheap. I also still have my 2015 451 and now the 2019 453 both electric the first electric and the last one sold in the U.S. The one thing i like the LEAST is that the seats do NOT recline at all I just want like 3 inches back not for driving of course but when you are just sitting in the car.
Huge Smart fan but disappointed with this. Makes no sense when Mii electric/Citigo does twice the distance for less money. Quickly buy a petrol one before it’s too late!
Pretty sure that thing is not going to sell that well. After all the new e-up, seat mii electric and skoda citigo iv all are under 20k and have double the battery capacity

SMART if you are watching this please please bring the new smart car to the SUA
"Animal skin seating" :D hahaha made my day
First, check out what the leather industry is trying to do:

22k Euros for the starting model with halogen headlights. Why would anyone buy this?
Anyone with a decent pay, obviously. 22k Euros is extremely low price for this. That's nothing! A University student with a job could get this. I am projecting with that last point.
I don't know. I'm planning to buy this - this is right now the cheapest electric car you can buy. And it's fun in the city. For a city car you should consider other cars only if you need more than two seats...
yes, this is so overpriced...Zoe all over this
@@johannesfranck1770 but Zoe is more expensive than this. Way more, to be precise.
Arda Celik, these cars are perfect for people who always forget a coin for the shopping cart. 😆
if they give this thing decent power and range, like 50kwh and 140hp, this would be a blast. The battery tech might just now have gotten to a point where this is possible.
140 hp? Do you have a death wish?
Very Smart Review
Finallyyyyyyy, the included an armrest !!!! Why the small cars never have armrest???????
Where can you get these body parts in the US? I want that front bumper especially!
Thanks!
The word you were looking for is : compliance car or model, in order to sell more and much bigger models without penalty for emissions...
What shoes are you wearing?
Smart did a big mistakes by cancelling the colored interiors !!
The VW e-up! got a 36.8 kwh pack this year. 17 seems awfully small.
It doesn't matter - nobody buys a smart car if they're going more than 70 miles a day. This is a bold move by smart but these cars are selling well in my city.
@@mach1nefan I would like to travel a lot on Smart when I have it. I love this car, and for me, in fact, it is very important. Im happy
Looks so cute!
True! I love its little lights! 🤗
Which country is this channel from?
I wish Smart build a new roadster. Very underrated two seaters.
Love it. If I ever have an extra 30K, I'd buy one for sure.
Is it Mercedes...or Renault tech..? Please answer...
@@autogefuehl got it. Ya i meant to ask in general for all the EVs.
I love ultra small cars like these.
Nice review as always! Could you do a review on another small and German car the e.Go Life? Thanks
Thanks! That still being sold?
Their website is still live and receiving pre-orders, didn’t know they weren’t doing alright 🤔
Not sure what the latest status is!
Thanks! No chance yet
How did you u opened up the upper trunk at 05:56 ?
No one bought the electric smart because of the price, and now they kill the petrol car and leave the price the same on the EQ. What are they planning, to sell 10 of them?
Honda E any time soon?! Can't wait!
I hope so. Let s see what we can do
Is that Valencia?
👌
Introducing in India? & when.
Where will this car be built?
Same place all smarts have been built I think Hambach france en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartville,_Hambach,_France
Autogefühl were there in 2014
When will launch in India
can you answer me is the headroom the same between coupe and cabrio?
Hmm didnt I show? Not too much of a difference
Mercedes should have used the drive stalk like in the BMW i3 and got rid of the center console stick shift and used that space for center console deep pocket storage. Just sayin...
Hey , Bring the Lime green one please !
You mention New York but the problem is these vehicles are not available anymore in the United States and very few Mercedes dealers work on them. I live in Michigan in not one single Mercedes dealer is authorized to work at any of those smart EQ Vehicles
yeah...
5:20 no DC Fast Charging in 2020, that's a shame...
@@isuller many people own at most one car... having more than that won't help with resources and climate issues 😉
your comparing apple to oranges
time to fill isn't relevant, time to travel a given distance (including charging time) is the right measure.
For ICE, it's like saying I can do 2000km with a tank if you don't know its size... doesn't tell much
@@seb. that's true. In that case Smart is not your car. And it doesn't matter if it is electric or not: it is not meant to be an intercity car...
But if you have to cars - like we do - Smart is the perfect second car.
very good vidéo.
Cheers please recommend us!
YES
Seems like a very limited market compared to IC version.
I like my 2014 second GEN, or the first GEN for the United States. I don’t like the newer model look and I might be a bit biased
Nice good looking little car
I love this...😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
SEAT Leon next please
Thank you. I would love to see more kW and would be fun with a sport version leve v8 old technology AMGs behind. 😁# BUZZOFFTOXIC
Sad no more in the US...
I think he said “70” mile range not “17”. 😊 My 2019 base model - only complaint I have is the steering wheel is fixed, not adjustable.
We want hood open close smart for 4 person
Great review and just ordered a Coupe as a local runaround to complement our Mercedes EQC 400.
Enjoy!
What's your height Thomas? 🤔
I want the front bumper and grill for my car.
►Compare the VW e-up!:ruclips.net/video/PBBdsV4I4cI/видео.html
►Compare the Seat Mii: ruclips.net/video/Fn58ynoALio/видео.html
Not quite enough storage to use as a golf cart.
tl;dr: price? electric range?
17kWh battery = ~100km range ... price should be ~20K EURO (without subsidies).
Probably 160-180km and from 22k
Huge Smart fan but disappointed with this. Makes no sense when Mii electric/Citigo does twice the distance for less money. Quickly buy a petrol one before it’s too late!
No spare tire? 7:02
Nope
Nice car
Pretty sure that thing is not going to sell that well. After all the new e-up, seat mii electric and skoda citigo iv all are under 20k and have double the battery capacity
From his expression in the rearview mirror it looks like Jonas is concentrating hard. Or he's just desperate for some leg room.
Hahaha you have never sat in one then. 6' 5" is no problem here.
