This film is truly Leone's most haunting, and it most certainly owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Morricone's score. Can't even count the amount of times I've found myself watching this alone in the dark, completely enthralled. And by the end, I challenge anyone not to become an emotional wreck. But Morricone can do that to ya.
I saw this film late one night many years ago. The film is underestimated but the soundtrack swept me away, it's glorious and sublime. I bought the soundtrack as on vinyl within days and when that copy was too damaged to play I got the CD. it one of Morricone's best work in my opinion.
He knew he was dying and could not be saved. So he speed up the process so he isn't in pain, and to be fair, throughout the entire story it is shown that he isn't satisfied with life, that all his passions fizzled out with the betrayal from his friend and killing him. He hated the revolution in Mexico and decided in the end that his goals were never going to be achieved. Simply put, He ran out of reasons to fight onwards.

Génial
Everything is in this haunting music : the sun, the heat, the stage coach movement, the light, and above all : the hopelessness...

This whole segment is amazing. Morricone was a genius.
Did John really Blow Himself up?
Or did he manage to slip into The Night?
