Fast Drying Lumber Inside The House Without A Kiln

  • I am fast drying lumber in my house for use within a month after I cut it on the lumber mill.
    After much research online I could not find anything to help out on this point. Everyone says it takes months or years to dry lumber without a kiln.
    Most do it yourself lumber mill owners air dry their lumber outside for a period of months before bringing it inside the wood shop to finish drying to a certain moisture percentage.
    One thing everyone says is important is wind. To dry wood you need a lot of moving air and protection from rain and sun.
    I want to use these live edge slabs within 30 days after I cut them on the mill. So I brought them inside my house and set them up with stickers just like you would outside.
    This is in a back room which does not get as hot or dry as it does in the living room next to the wood stove. It is December and we are heating our house with fire wood in northern Michigan.
    I set up a fan to blow on the wood during the night and turn it off during the day. This allows the wood to slowly dry in the room. It seems to be working because after two weeks the wood feels a lot lighter than it was when I first cut it on the lumber mill.
    And the ends are not splitting like I had expected from drying the wood relatively fast.
    I do believe this is going to be a success. I will let you all know how it turns out in two more weeks.
    It looks like my budget kiln drying rig is working nicely.

    wood dried in a kiln is dried from the ends some cracks occur but they are cut off. you can avoid all the cracking by applying a mixtures off boiled linseed oil and cornstarch. mix them into a slurry and apply it to the ends . the oil will get sucked into the grain pulling in the corn starch . as the wood dries it will shrink and start to push out the corn starch. this will give you a more controlled drying. this is how you dry slabs of end grain. I have done 60 inch rounds with very little cracking.

      Cool. Thank you. I have read about paint, wax and other things but not this. I will have to try it.

    Kiln drying inside can be done but requires a dehumidifier. Google or BING how does a kiln work to dry wood? and there is an excellent site called instructables that shows the step by step process. It also reminds people to have plastic under the stacked wood so the carpet or flooring isn't ruined. And that the ends need to be sealed..

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  5 лет назад +3

      I studied extensively and talked to professionals in person. You do not want a dehumidifier in winter when using a wood stove. It is already too dry inside our home for this. Therefore I had to have a higher humidity for this wood so it would not dry too fast.
      Kiln drying is done under controlled humidity. Too low, too fast and you split the wood.
      Ends should be sealed but you can get away without under certain conditions.
      Not sure how my floor will be ruined?

    if you turn the wood to where the end grain is facing the fan you will have less cupping and it will dry quicker.

      I fear drying the end grain first will cause splitting on the ends. This is the part that dries faster, causing splits.

    On the wood drawing well the key thing is that you need to keep your spacer boards right below each other. They also dried oversized planks and mailed them down when it was dry

    You "brought in a junk battery so it doesn't get wrecked from the cold"? I would do something to protect my good batteries :) Good idea for drying the wood.

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  5 лет назад +2

      A good, fully charged battery does not freeze in winter. A discharged battery will be destroyed. I never get how people have fits because my batteries are outside when they all leave their car in the cold themselves at the same time. Doesnt your vehicle have a battery in it? Do you bring it inside out of the cold?

    • @DavidJohnson-tv2nn
      @DavidJohnson-tv2nn 5 лет назад +3

      Battery efficiency or capacity goes down with cold temperature. So you're not getting the most out of your solar power system. You could get a few dollars for the junk battery at the scrap yard or spend a few years trying to restore it with the bedini thing.

      Yes but what is the fun in that?

      Troy, I want to make a suggestion about "fun" and practical that might soothe the "hair pulling" and angry frustration some of us have had as we watch things you show that conflict with our understanding. Fun and practical are not necessarily the same. How about telling your audience when a subject is just for fun and not meant to be practical? I for one generally leave an open mind that whatever the video subject, that it is going to be something practical usually. Of course some subjects are obviously mean to be funny, like showing the cats playing in a box, but other videos, like any mention of the Bedini gizmo is not likely obvious to the general public. And about Bedini, I am very aware what he accomplished and not once did he publicly demonstrate a machine that could run its self and power other stuff perpetually. It can not power a house all by itself. It is at best only marginally useful to DESULFATE some batteries that are not ALREADY too far gone. And yes I did make one of his devices. And that is only one example. Same with subjects like the lead acid battery debate of leaving out in the cold as David Johnson so kindly mentioned. So just tell us when something technical you do is to be a learning or practical video or simply for fun or both. Sorry the comment got so long.

    It looks like you have just enough to make a nice wall wind-up clock with pendulum In A Box Troy you do deserve such a like that I would give it a chiming movements and I would not settle for a plastic movement but get yourself one made out of brass. I have heard of old time stories that they use these things through the night to check on their wood stove and they also timed it to bathroom time that's a little different than a midnight snack this project would be a very nice project especially if you add the words on heirloom clock

    For nearly 30 years, Anchorseal has been the sealer of choice for protection against end grain checking. Lumbermen, turners and furniture builders alike have used Anchorseal for years to protect their wood investment. I buy mine by the gallon on Amazon just type in anchorseal 2

    Love this. Are you ever worried about bringing wood-boring insects or termites into your home?

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  4 года назад

      Most fresh cut wood will not have many insects in it. The process of cutting it on the mill and handling of the lumber generally dislodges what few there are.

      @@TheDoItYourselfWorld Awesome! A friend of mine just sold me a beautiful fresh cut maple slab I'm turning into a breakfast table. I'm a newbie and I'm torn between kiln-drying (which is a couple hours away) vs air drying for a couple years. I'm in no rush, but it's good to know I could probably air-dry safely without worrying about insects

    Yes continuation a little bit of a history lesson this is why a two by four originally major exactly 2 inch by 4 this was the spare piece on a large plank that was cut off in the Milling process then itself was meal down yet the old timers often used it just as building Lumber and you will find in the older houses actual to buy for construction and sometimes it was good Lumber for actuality the opposite of peace was mailed into furniture grade Hardwood and well I guess everything. Modernize and somehow they shrink the size of construction Lumber yes I must admit I do not know the exact reason or history behind that. One cannot collect every wise historic story quite frankly people are going through life not even knowing our country's fundamental principles the other day I was pondering about freedom of religion and I really doubt that means every religion is tolerated I think that is a misconception that got into the school work and then the school work said we're not going to talk about it. I believe the freedom of religion is coming from the harmony of a baying the law out of a sense of love for God and Country in this is a Harmony within the culture that give us a sense of our freedom it is a freedom from tyranny and it is our American Liberty itself however even Lincoln said we speak of Liberty but we all do not mean the same thing

    I work at a sawmill from time to time, we wax the ends of the flitches, and dry outdoor under cover about 1 year per inch. we are making timbers for furniture, so we do this to avoid warping. if they dry too fast they feel dry outside but stay wet inside.

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  5 лет назад

      That is exactly the norm from what everyone says. I am hoping though to get this wood ready to use in a month. It was a year old so not green. But wet inside.
