Got a set of PH2's myself and LOVE them! These Heritage sets are particularly ornate. I very much like that they are moving away from plastic in favor of woods for imitating the ivory look. Also, your pics of the set are MUCH better than the ones R.G. Hardie & Co.uses for their marketing. Can't wait for the ABW oil review!
What an incredible set of pipes (both). I could almost see your hands shaking with anticipation. It took me back to unboxing my McCallums AB4 a couple weeks ago. The tooling in the Henderson pipes is beautiful and sound superior. I do believe the Boxwood, do to it's nature, will be noticeably richer and darker in color within a year. Thanks for the links Matt, saves rummaging through all the videos to find them. Cheers *CLICK* Cnd
Sinclair's as good as any maker past or present! An awsome sound. Have won msny solo@band cpmpetitions l have a lovely made by Alastair himseif in 2008, i personally consider them equally as my favourite, alongside my 2009 Henderson's. Pipe major, John Anferson. Sussex England.
Love the fact the Infinity Chanters were out after Winter Storm. Saw a couple of them fly out when we were there. and the PH Heritage pipes are nice. We won the raffle for them at last year's Winter Storm.
That's awesome! I won the Winter Storm Raffle in 2017 and won a set of PH01's! Thought they'd be my "forever pipes" until these Heritage ones came out...
I have been thinking of these as an upgrade to the poly McCallums I play currently. They are very robust and practical, but I am thinking it might be time to hand the polys on to my 76yo learner father, who has giant hands and a great deal of “enthusiasm”, and drool over some beautiful ABs. I mentioned this model to my PM and got a great deal of excited feedback. So I think I shall take the plunge. Thankyou for such a thorough and graceful review.
McCallum polys are a solid instrument. I think their medium bore size make for one of the better sounding poly pipes out there. But they're still poly, with their limitation (I find I am never done tuning the drones on a ply set). I know you'd love a set of these Henderson Heritage pipes!
Matt Willis Bagpiper I completely agree, there is nothing “wrong” with my McCallum polys, they are reliable and indestructible, and make a very decent (and loud) sound, and if my father were not in the need of a set I would likely keep playing them long term. My PM thinks it is hilarious that I have not yet purchased a set of AB pipes, as I have a tiny reputation as a shopaholic. I usually not shy in buying myself treats 😂. But AB pipes are a forever thing, and it is good to make decisions slowly I think. I like that they are gracefully turned and love, love, love the boxwood mounts.
Matt Willis Bagpiper St Kilda Retail in Queensland Australia. They had one set in stock and now they don’t 😂 ! They were being posted so efficiently that I actually had to delay them until Monday, when I will actually be home to collect them. We are having seriously weird weather here in Australia (almost every state is having either fire or flooding or both) so I don’t want them left anywhere they can be exposed to the elements for amount of time, even “safe” in the Post Office......
I also love that Cannon at the end of this video. Can you tell me what the name of it is? I really love the sound of pipes playing harmony, kind of doing a musical dance that's magical. Thanks for doing these videos for us! and finding all of the other videos so we don't have to go rummaging around for hours looking for them. It's so much fun to see you getting so excited as you unbox each different thing and describe it all so well. Blind people truly appreciate that more than you can imagine! You forgot to tell us what the new box wood smells like. I'm not sure I've ever held any of that kind of wood in my hands. Will they send the missing chanter later or is it just too bad they ran out so your student will have to get a chanter separately when they get some more made? Would it be made out of box wood also to match the pipes? Yes, I'm just a well spring of never ending questions. I know.
Nicely done presentation. The new pipes had a better (not quite so over-powering) sound ...obviously due to drone reed set-up. The new owner should be well pleased.
Thanks! The newer set has a lovely ring to the drone sound. My set I think is a bit too much for my microphone to handle. Still sorting out the best way to mic a bagpipe. And the new owner is thrilled!
A warranty is always nice. Who knows when something may go wrong. For the most part that doesn't happen, but if one maker has a 5 year and another 2 year and another no appreciable warranty, that kind of tells you something, methinks.
Thank you! One of my favorite parts of the engraving on this set is the laser etching is subtle from a distance, giving the pipe an aged or antiqued look to the mounts, and when you get up close, WOW!
I’me leaming with my 13 yo son on Gibson practice chanter. When the time comes, what are great pipes to own. I like the idea of the practice set first?
Yes, I feel a practice set is an important step toward full highland pipes, if one can afford it. The Twist Trap practice pipes are a great instrument, as are the McCallum folk pipes.
That is real nice polishing on the blackwood parts, my first set of Hendersons did not have that level of polish, indeed, that is a fine set of pipes, I'm looking forward to buying a set for myself.
Hi matt nice video I really enjoyed it and keep up the great work. I have one question I'm looking for a new solo chanter but I'm not sure what kind of chanter could you help me out?
Thanks! As for chanter, I love both the Hardie Infinity and the new McCallum Ceol. Both are amazing. Easy to reed, even easier to play. I’ve also heard great things about the G1 solo chanter, but I haven’t personally played that one.
Recording just don't do those pipes justice. I just got a set, it's amazing, not only the looks and craftsmanship, the sound is amazing. I've been using my Sinclair maple chanter with them. Such a sweet sound.
Awesome looking and sounding set of pipes, the craftsman ship is outstanding. Is the infinity chanter easier to finger for someone with clumsy fingers to play?
Beautiful engravings on these! Both sets are lovely, but I prefer the more traditional look of the boxwood. Thanks for sharing, your unboxings are always so much fun! Are there more highland sets you plan on unboxing this year?
Good but tough question. I go back and forth between my Balance Tone Bass/Ezeedrone tenor setup and my Ackland Drone reeds (both are great but different). My go-to chanters are either a Campbell tunable or a Shepherd blackwood (a bit lower pitch). Melvin reeds have been going well, but so do Shepherds and G1s.
I was briefly a beginning piper for my previous employer. I progressed to the point of being able to play amazing grace at a funeral before I had to leave that employer and return their pipes. What pipes would you recommend for a guy who's been playing for just under a year and wouldn't like to spend more than $1000?
The McCallum AB0 can be found for less than $1000 (like $975) a few places, but that's probably the only one actually under $1000 that's not a poly (plastic) bagpipe.
@@amanfromaplace I would... Poly pipes can sound amazing, but I find them difficult to keep in tune with blackwood pipes. I don't know if it's because they move more quickly in different temperature or what, but it became clear quickly in my pipe band I was spending more time tuning my poly players than my blackwood players.
Perhaps going half again as much? Online, that seems to open up more choices. The route I took for my stand of pipes was to hook up with a band and get it at the band rate, which was a real discount -- then. Decades ago now. But if there's a deal on quality (non Amazon Pakistani) pipes of meticulous and precious workmanship, you can try that.
Hi I was wondering if you could tell me the set up I would need to get the sound of the pipes played in the politics & the life from the king Arthur soundtrack i like that low bass type tone
Ah, those are the Irish uilleann pipes there, not the highlands. Here's a review of one of the more affordable sets out there: ruclips.net/video/KUCQi9gOuNY/видео.html
I was luck enough to see these pipes at the factory in the early satin wood days. They looked fantastic, BUT, I bloomin' hate hate hate (with a passion) the laser etched 'engraving'. The PH02s I saw with the more traditional engraved nickel looked superior (to my eye). But the wood mounts are lovely, as is the sound which is the most important thing.
The traditional engraved nickel is a more classic look for certain, and you can see the engraving from across the room. I find the laser etched engraving far more subtle, like it's just for me. Is your satinwood as dark as mine?
@@MattWillisBagpiper TBH Matt I didn't end up buying them, but the ones I saw were very similar to yours. Very pretty. And RGH did say that they could put the engraved nickel on if I liked which made me seriously consider them.
