Showing the problems is reality tv, content, whatever. It shows those that dream of this life that it's not just paradise, it's work. Lots of work. Worth it, but still lots of work. More kids, more problems. More land, more problems. More animals, more problems. More blessings, more problems. Maybe problems isn't the right word. It can be called challenges. Y'all are doing great! Hope y'all enjoy your break.
Suggest building a little wood structure around the frost free pump & insulate it. You could also put an outlet in it & plug in a light to help keep it from freezing.
We always installed frost free faucets outside you can get them in any height, didn’t have any problems getting water to the horses up north after that, tank heaters help too solar or electric
I’d like to take a moment to thank Austin and a Justin for reading and responding, with the change of their content, to the audience feedback. We asked for a changed yall delivered. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing & happy vacation! That was so cute how Lily crossed the creek by hopping onto Blaze’s back & riding across, plus Henry in a tote! All the kids are great help & have their own personalities & strengths! That’s a lot of prep work, Rebekah; you’re a dedicated & loving Mom. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦🌲
I like the idea that if a snow storm comes, you're not having to run to the store to buy milk, eggs, etc. You still have a food supply no matter what. Even with Helene, you had supplies.
I totally agree that there will be things that go wrong, when you have several variables in the mix of doing anything. I still think that some of those recurring problems could be minimized with some improvements to the farm. Animals getting out due to gates left open, or electric fence not being turned on…a permanent fence system would alleviate the electric fence, unless you go with a wired fence, which may need electric anyway. But a more structured fence would make some of those problems go away. The watering is also one of your constant problems. Between broken hoses, frozen lines, it’s a constant repair job. As with any job, there must be a constant analyzing of what works and what doesn’t, and then take what doesn’t, and improve. Yes we all make those mistakes. It doesn’t matter who you are. I find myself looking for better ways to do my job, and for the most part I have solved many issues that keep me from repeating those things that don’t work efficiently. I think your content would be just as interesting, even without those issues. I’m sure you guys have plenty of interesting things to share with us in your every day life. Trust me, your life is more interesting than most! ❤
Didn't he say that the electricity was out when they got home at night, so the fence would had lost power and needed someone to go out and start the fence again after they got the power back on.
When you have animals or livestock you are always going to have problems that come up. My Mom & stepdad had a farm and he was always outside working on something that needed fixed. It's hard work. You are outside in all weather 365 days a year. It's a part of having a homestead, farm, ranch etc. I don't miss going outside in the winter months getting firewood, watering the livestock and shoveling manure. Yes we had to shovel it out of the barns. He put it in the manure spreader and put it in the garden. That was the fertilizer & they always had vegetables. Thanks for showing all the problems you have because ppl would think it was easy having a homestead if you didn't. This way if they want to have one then they know what to expect. Anyway thanks for sharing everything with us! Hope you guys have a great time on vacation! Everyone needs a reset and to rest.
I watched a video today where the farmer said that different people HAND milking a cow, causes mastitis, because of the differing pressures and style of them milking. He said that is why machine milking has less instances of mastitis. Don't know that I agree with that last bit, but it sort of makes sense about the changes in milkers.. We run solely on rain water totes.. Hubby unplugged the tank heater.... we were without ANY water except barn tank water, for a full week, till I discovered his 'crime' while attempting to install a new heater. Took 2 days to defrost completely for me to get water.. yesterday.
Is it just me or everyday they seem to have the same issues. Their friend, Jason from Sow The Land has chicken and pigs too but his chores every day are so much calmer and smoother than the Rhodes. Maybe they need to spend time setting up processes and infrastructure so they don't have the same issues everyday
Suggestion probably check off list downstairs two look at to see if each chore has been done and someone to go back and double-check behind everyone to make sure that everything has doubly been done
Ason from saw the land has small pigs, calmer and they are only 3! Here are 7 the more people the more problems and distractions! No one is perfect here on earth! God is the only perfect one!
There is always a reason to put the things back after you use them. Think if the city didn’t connect your water, electric, gas, sewer - utilities once it gets fixed. A pre/post trip in a vehicle…. Preventative Maintenance ….there are a lot of examples of this lesson in life, it’s the small things that make a big difference and save money and help you and your animals and homestead thrive. 🙌
Justin, why don't you have permanent fences up. You have lived their long enough to know where your pastures are always located. You could just have gates and entrances to where you could still move your cows when you need to move them. Seems like you could save yourself a lot of that temporary fence moving. Could you explain why you don't have permanent fencing.
I agree. We move our animals every other day to different pasture, cows, goats, and we have permanent fences w/gates. They know when we open that gate where they need to go. We also have buried water lines. We live in central Il and have to have them buried 3 ft. to keep from freezing. He wouldn't have to go but about a foot in the ground, a series of frost free hydrants and he would not have to worry about freezing water every single day and fixing all the splits in hoses, trying to find tools/parts to fix them all the time. Time is efficiency and they do kill so much time doing these things every day. Infrastructure was the first thing we put into place over 40 years ago when we started. The hurricane, they could not help, but, organization/infrastructure is key to being efficient.
It's only natural that when multiple large animals are crowded into a small square space they wind up with their backsides squeezed into a corner. Move the waterers to a side wall, maybe next to the feeder?
I don't think the issue is that you have problems, we all do. It's that some of these problems might be fixed by better systems. Your gravity watering system needs regular maintenance and checking, especially at its source. Don't wait until there is a problem before you check the filters, etc. And have spare parts on hand. Same goes for the various fuels used. You should never run out of fuel if checking the levels is on a scheduled check list. There's vehicle maintenance as well. Not my wheelhouse but I'm think spare parts, The animals getting out, well, good luck with that. They're animals, bless their hearts. Maybe you should look into getting those cattle watering troughs up off the ground a few feet. I know everyone who works with you knows about these things but, it's sometime better to assign the maintenance tasks to one person per problem area. That way it gets done and the assignee gets a sense of ownership and the pleasure of a job well-done. You've come so far and inspired so many people, not just farm folk. Thank you.
Eh not necessarily. I’ve had horses my whole life and only have ever made the choice if they’re in stalls. When in pasture or large paddocks, blankets can tend to cause more harm than good. Wild weather changes can cause overheating if not taken off in time. And more so I’ve had many horses get stuck in wire and such due to blankets. It’s been 13 years since I’ve thrown a blanket on one of my horses and I live in Wyoming! Just thought I’d share this!! Horses like the majority of animals will put on a coat in the winter that absolutely keeps them warm enough. Kind of like chickens I do not and never will give them extra light/ heat in the winter. I have everything they need to stay dry and warm and if they want to take time off laying eggs for a month or two in the winter then I let them 😁
Horses coats are well suited for winter weather…thick coats with hair that stands upright, hollow cores that help insulate them, snow rests on top forming another insulating layer. Do not have wind chill as no exposed skin and blankets flatten the hair and lose the loft that insulates them. Only time a blanket is called for is if temps drop to -40F. Providing extra hay is all they really need as digestion produces tons of bodily heat. Live at 9400’ in Colorado and my guys are happy as clams in sub zero temperatures
🇦🇺I have a key tag on my sewing machine cord and overlocker cord ( with “overlocker” or “sewing machine” written on tag). When cords are plugged into power I can tell that it’s connecting too. I also do this for my second fridge and upright freezer, so they don’t get accidentally unplugged.
yes a shoe rack that holds the shoe upside on a post....or a dowel system like used to hang riding boots......btw i set an alarm on my cell to remind me to ck certain things....even the nite befire garbage pick up to clean out refidgerator....lol really helps....n another alarm to bring garbage cans to street....
We have a small cattle ranch on 60 acres of irrigated pasture. If something gets broken ,lost, misplaced, this is the why! Prevented measures aren’t taken! A schedule for maintenance is not in place. And of course things will break!!! If there isn’t a designated location for items to be stored goes without saying. Labeling items such as plugged in extension cords might help them from being unplugged Securing them helps! If the animals are getting in the troth a barrier by making a roof, so they can’t jump in but their head fits would help. Take a month off from videoing. You can not be efficient on a farm when your focus is divided between the job at hand and making a video. I’ve been telling my husband for years to slow down, and to make schedules. That’s why things are lost and broken. I thing my point has been made And just know this is coming from a GreatGrandma ! 😊
Really enjoyed Austin and his sweet wife and child! They are so personable and interesting. Do they also have a RUclips site? It’s great to have friends and neighbors to help out and work together!
Thanks for this. My chickens keep getting out and one got trapped in my husband's shop over night. It knocked so much stuff off the shelves and pooped everywhere! So much poop. Growing food and raising animals has taught me so much about accepting reality and breaking the need to be a perfectionist!
Rebecca, since you make a lot of bread, you might consider a Bosch mixer. I love my Kitchenaid but the Bosch can handle very large batches and has a cover you can put on while mixing so, your flour doesn’t fly everywhere. I ordered mine from Amazon. You won’t be sorry.
Bosch is a much better mixer. I totally agree. I love mine. I had a Kitchenaid for over 30 years and finally switched. No comparison. Bosch is the way to go. I can get triple sourdough bread recipe in mine at one time and use that dough for all sorts of things. I wish I had gotten one decades ago.
sometimes we walk away from a project meaning to return n then dont hence the unwrapped cord.....get intouch with Gold Shaw farms in vermont tips to keep water flowing during winter.....
Here is an idea why not get a water pump and one hose to reach the pole barn and pump your creek water to water the sheep and cows. You said yourself the water never freezes
If you want the pump more permanent once your bank is stabilized you can make a small insulated house the size of an out house or your preference and that can reduce your chances of the pump not starting on cold days.
Can't we use some tecknology to help monitor the condition of fences? Can't Premier One produce an indicator light to sit atop one of the corner posts so that there is visual cue from a distrance that the power is on?. With a pair of binoculars, one could survey the fencing status. Or perhaps a notification on a phone app. Back in a minute, I gotta run to the patent office....

You can make sauce from the land. I make sweet and sour barbecue sauce, garlic sauce, horseradish, etc. and I grow it all myself in laundry baskets on my back porch. And I am disabled and 71 years old. There is no such thing as not being able to do it yourself.
Horses need blankets in the cold. Lilly knows what she is doing, you don't or don't care. A horse is not a cow. they don't want to be in the pole barn with the cows either. You have a nice stall for horses for a reason. You keep repeating the same things and activities over and over. We are not stupid.
you really didn't do it like your great grandparents did. they preserved their meat, not frozen. If you truly wanted to do it right, you would do it like the Amish do. Can meat, veggies etc.
Justin stop telling lily how to care for her horse. That horse looks to have been shaved and does not have a winter coat. Why do you constantly try to make her feel bad about doing what SHE thinks is best for the horse.
I get the living of the land . It seems the content is constant mistakes. I believe work smarter is not harder. But taking all your bread , cookware, and food, that's not a vacation that's working on the road. But whatever relaxes you is what matters.
Great videos every day, some of the comments are a bit harsh! Wow! Gonna miss the every day videos! Maybe Austin can troubleshoot all the problems and get great ideas from commmenters to be able to have such great content! LOL! Enjoy your time away!
Hi Justin. Yes. Things always happen. People who don't have things ever go wrong.... They aren't living on a farm . For those comparing you to other farmer/ creators... They just don't get it. Every life is different. Just because I don't have the same problems in my life doesn't mean you wouldn't in my life. It's a true lack of understanding on their part that there are differences. We all have days where nothing seems to go right whether we did all the right things or not. We often forget things when we aren't going through them. The REASON we appreciate your showing what isnt working is that no one has a perfect life all the time. Knowing you are real is comforting. Thanks for being real.
Showing the problems is reality tv, content, whatever. It shows those that dream of this life that it's not just paradise, it's work. Lots of work. Worth it, but still lots of work. Suggest building a little wood structure around the frost free pump & insulate it. You could also put an outlet in it & plug in a light to help keep it from freezing.
why? it doesn't freeze.... if used correctly
Have fun you all, enjoy, rest up, the farm is in good hands. Love what you do, love the videos!

Have a blessed vacation! Blessings!

4th redundancy..would be the down stairs kitchen sink to hook hose up to for frozen water emergencies for animals
There is a place for everything , and everything has a place.
You need to get a boot shelf to set outside.
Your boy’s are great at woodworking projects. Why not suggest a shoe rack? No more ‘Mr. Brown where are your shoes?’
Scattered shoes are messy. Also the cords, hoses. Messy, messy.
Buy one and send it over to them

Because areas are constantly changing
Build a platform for the waterer so it doesn't get stopped in.

Happy Day from PA, your milk cow has a cousin in PA ❤

I looking forward to 40 to 50K of views. I've been enjoying share the journey too.
I don't know that we "like" your big problems. We like knowing your family is safe and we tune in more during big events.
You can make sauce from the land. I make sweet and sour barbecue sauce, garlic sauce, horseradish, etc. and I grow it all myself in laundry baskets on my back porch. And I am disabled and 71 years old. There is no such thing as not being able to do it yourself.
Good for you! I make my own plum sauce, but no plums growing yet so I buy them and reduce the sugar in the final product .
Boot shelf for the back door an front
maybe its time for a digital chore chart!
Happy Day. 💚

Not sure why he is so against Blaze having a blanket.....horses need blankets.
I love all your problems! 😂😂❤😂😂
You should get some portable power stations.
No vacation for the pigs! LOL. Hope you have a great vacation.
gluten free, do you have a recipe for that? 😊
He-man keeps stepping and pooping in the water. Why don't you elevate the water container. Put some blocks or something under it?
water issue with barn cows sheep......so close to house horse post water no freeze...
Enjoy that well deserved vacation and recharge those batteries of the entire family.
Helene was horrible tiok me three months to shake off the trama.....cant imagine what those in wnc living in tents are feeling....prayers
😊😊
Hope Bec will do a bun video
Did you feed the cat and dog?
Did we get the 3 hot chocolate recipes from the other day?
farming is not easy. You will always have issues with something when you have to take care of animals. We learn as we go.

That's called parenting.
AMEN

Permanent exterior fencing and deeply buried water lines. Too much Micky Mouse. Homesteading doesn’t have to be so frustrating.
Justin stop working harder and work smarter. I figure you'll understand what I'm talking about
👍🙋♂️❤️😊
It freaks me out how much money you waste by braking the same things over and over again.

Hi Justin.
