+The Cisco Kid Yes, he wasn't about to cry... he WAS crying. Dennis MacKay, who was the sound engineer on the song has said this: “Bowie’s screaming, and what you hear on that song [‘Five Years’] - the emotion - is for real. He’s bawling his eyes out. [Mick] Ronson was looking at Bowie, stunned. I was in shock, because… he was also hitting every note spot-on. I’ve worked with some great vocalists since. But no-one who could do it in one take with that much emotion.”
The producer Ken Scott (who also worked as an engineer with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Supertramp and many others) said that Bowie was the only singer he knew who could nail a track in one take.
Wow, that nearly drove me to tears listening to that! I never realized how much passion and emotion he put into this song until I listened to the vocals alone. What's even more incredible, is the fact he did this all in one take. He was astonishing, and he will forever be.
I read about how he broke down in the end in the book “David Bowie, a Life” by Dylan Jones and I had to hear it. I always heard the his cracking up crying in the song but hearing it bare here is moving.
Dear David, if 5 years were all we ever had of your craft, then we would still have been the most graced of all people for eternity.Thankyou for everything. You have touched my soul & reached into my mind since 6 yrs of age when I first heard your voice
I went to see a show named From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads the other day and it was based around a kid following the path of Bowie's life with the soundtrack of Bowie's music. They used the vocals from this song at one point, the screaming just hit me so much emotionally
I have long known he was crying by the end of the song. But that wasn't just some tears running down his face! He was really, actively crying, hard! And hitting every note spot on. Tears me up inside. I can't get that upset even I feel convinced that 5 Years is fast becoming our reality.
Archeology by now, but "hitting every note spot on" is so far from the truth. Neither pitch nor time. I'm 100% agreeing he nailed the take, but that's really down to the objective of the recording, which obviously wasn't "hitting notes spot on", for good reason. The feels rarely come from hitting notes spot on.
He was in the zone when he did this take and over the years listening to it over and over again I now believe he meant every single word of it he's pouring his heart and soul into every part of it you can't fake that
With a lot of his songs it´s that his voice is a bit overpowered by the volume of the music and I often wished they put the voice on louder, also in some concert videos. Because I would rather be able to hear his voice better, would be even more amazing than it already is. Best musician, best artist ever!!!

Amazing - and i never noticed before but ... K. West ? Kanye? Did the worlds least talented and most egotistical rapper take his name from a classic Bowie album?
He screamed and cried durning this one and only take.

At the end he sounds like he's gonna burst into tears. So much passion in the music. So sad he's gone.
He was. It was done in one take and he was crying at the end.

War David Bowie tatsächlich ein Übermensch ???
Oh ja
I love this channel.
Amazing - and i never noticed before but ... K. West ? Kanye? Did the worlds least talented and most egotistical rapper take his name from a classic Bowie album?
Funny fact: Kanye was born 5 years (and two days) after this album was released
+Alex Simpson It could also we read as "Quest" - far more apt in Bowie's case I think? ;)
+Alex Simpson Kanye said David Bowie was foretelling his birth , Which is a croc of bull.
+Alex Simpson kanye was born kanye west
Not only was Kanye born Kanye West (didn't take his name from the album) he is also a fairly talented rapper. Egotistical? Absolutely.
holy shit.
fucking hell
Kanye West ???
The end is so sad .. :(
this isn't David Bowie, this is My Chemical Romance
