I had the pleasure of seeing the eagle in person inside of their team store hours before the game. The bird was regal and huge! To see the same bird fly around the stadium and crowd go wild gave me goosebumps.

You have to have special Federal certification to even handle the birds in rescue/rehabilitation situations. I'm guessing somebody captured and sold these bald eagles from either Canada or Mexico, where the bald eagles can also be found. Anybody know where these bald eagles came from? Golden Eagles were also added to the Protection Act in 1962. The other weird thing about Benfica is the club motto - E pluribus unum, a motto which has been in the Great Seal of the United States together with the emblem of the bald eagle since 1782 also. Since S. L. Benfica began its existence in 1904, I can only guess that whoever started the club was an admirer of the United States, or at the very least, its national symbols.

The Romans most likely patterned their eagle standards after the eastern imperial eagle, which lived in southeastern Europe and West and Central Asia and had a solid single colored feathering, which was represented as bronze or gold in the Roman standards. The Bald Eagle's range is specific to North America, which the Romans never visited. You would have to be BLIND to mistake a Bald Eagle for a Roman eagle because of its distinctive pure white feathering over its head and neck. There are only two other known eagle species with white feathering on their head/neck areas - the African fish eagle (sub-Saharan Africa) and the white-bellied sea eagle (India-Southeast Asia-Australia).

They became american symbols but they are from ancient Rome originally.
