Much appreciated!
Great video as always great info. I for sure hope you do the business series I’ve surpassed this being a hobby and I’m definitely needing a friends advice on how to start and turn this into a real business. Thanks for all the time that y’all take to make these videos.
Thanks! Once the season winds down that is on the list of videos to make.
This is a great video with a lot of great answers to questions I have had. Thank you very much for all the methods and resaults.
Glad that it helped you!
Hey guys we’ve been super busy so we haven’t been watching lately but we’re so glad to be back and see what’s happening good job
Thanks for stopping by! I think life is super busy for everyone! Y'all are killing it though.
Last season we got down to a little over an hour a skull with boiling method and that included the skinning.. It took us about the same time to skin them as it did to boil and powerwash. Your jaw breaker u bolt idea is easily going to cut down the time to skin. Getting the jaw off is always a pita so I cant wait to try it this season. Thanks for the videos
Let us know how it works next season! I know it saved us so much time this year. And it is a cheap fix! Thanks for watching.
I put all my skulls in the ground when I dont have time to do the skull mount immediately. After boiling let dry and use a can of stain blocking white primer on skull first. Then use a can of oil based white spray paint to paint the skull. Using spray cans can allow you to get into all the nooks of the skull very easy. You can apply multiple coats of both primer and paint in just mins. I then use a can of Sparurethane on the antlers. This will give them a nice shine and glow. The best part about this method is that it's now exterior proof. You can hang this skull on the outside of your shop building and it will always look new. Just remember that sun will wear on the coatings. Apply a new coating of spar each year to maintain premium look.
Thanks for the tips!
Based off thos video I'm not gonna use the beatles. I boil, BUT I am currently using maceration on a coyote skull that is pretty small. First time trying it. I dumped it put today and God bless America hahaha that was ripe. Put it back in water and gonna clean it up on Monday and see what it looks like. Kinda exited about it.
Good work on your videos and your work! I have learned alot from you thank you.
Good luck! Hope it turns out awesome!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. One day I hope to do one.
Thanks for the support!
larger skulls I boil but I do a sort of mix between boiling and maceration that I refer to as "stewing" on deer, antelope, and other smaller heads (mostly hornless heads) using an electric turkey roaster. first submerse the skull fully (preferably skinned, though I have started many a rabbit skull hide on..) and preferably put the lid on all the way (hence why it's good for hornless... but I do deer with the lid propped best I can) then set the temp around 120-150 and let it sit 2-4 days , all the meat will just fall off it at that point, it draws a fair amount of oil out..sadly NOT all the oil on stuff like bear though, still a pain in the rear to draw the oil out of them... with deer it's normally just a quick boil to draw the last of the oils out and a cream peroxide overnight before rinse and dry, I have a habit of clear-coating after finishing drying which I know brings mixed opinions but that was the way I was taught and have had good results with it in the small scale I've done for the last 10ish years.. nowhere near 400 heads a year you do though!
Thanks for sharing your process! Sounds like you got a good thing going. Keep it up! 👍
Thanks for the comparisons. I did spray “kilz” paint on a skull recently to test and It looks just like bone.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Video on point. Beetles love hate. Year round commitment and stink. Get stuck in the skull as well. Love maceration until winter hits us in upper Midwest. Tough to keep temps. Dont boil but simmer. Similar. Weaken bone and bake fat into the bone. Glad skullwork is going well. Love seeing peoples videos. One can get a deer skull fully done in 3 hours if wanted
Burying a skull takes long but if you want that dirty old look it does turn out cool. I did a bury skull on a buck and I loved the look after with the aging and dirty look it gave it. But definitely not the move for a white skull outcome
Agreed 👍
Exactly what I was thinking when he was talking about burying it. I'm in the process of doing My first one now. It's been buried a few months now and before I buried it I kind of already decided that I didn't want a bleached white unnatural skull.
As a matter of fact I left my antlers above the dirt line and I'm starting to question if I should go back and put them under the dirt as well to make sure everything has that same look.
Great video. I do about 75-85 a season by myself. Boiling to me is the only way spite all the controversy about removing nose cavity, etc... I have repeat customers for the last five years. Even though I wrap and tape horns during degreasing and re wrap before Boiling In peroxide I still lose a little color at the base. I now use a burnt umber fish paint with q tips I buy from Makenzie taxidermy supply that matches the VA whitetails perfect. I buy turkey pans from dollar store and cut in half and lay behind the racks on pot to help keep horns off of pots. Wish there was a way to keep the racks from losing some color though. Also the night before, I'll soak the skinned and mostly skinned skull n water to help draw 90% of the blood out.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
We have changed things up this year and need to do a video about it. We are using the peroxide cream to avoid wrapping horns and having discoloration.
We also soak in water but we like to go a week or 2 if possible.
@@OurTopPinLife are y'all mixing it with the quick white powder or just the straight 40vol cream? And then rinse off or brush. Just curious how long it has to sit to whiten
@@gohoosgo75 yes we are using the quick white. 24-48hrs depending on how much sun light we get.
@@OurTopPinLife thanks. That's the problem where I'm at, one November gets here, it doesn't really get out of the 40's during the day and the sun doesn't have a good effect, thought about trying heat lamps
I do my own and just a suggestion, walnut colored wood stain will solve the water discoloration of the antlers , matches most perfectly
Yes I love watching your videos, I am starting my own business in taxidermy, I have a question on when u doing your skull mounts , when using your power washer what is the psi on it
Great video! Appreciate the information!
👍👍
I dug a hole in the ground and put the skull in there. Then covered it with a heavy duty plastic bin. Lobe the look of it. Down fall is it takes 8 to 10 months. But comes out clean.
We started out using the same process. 👍
Put a skull in the dirt. Dirt and bone....
I wished that I would have seen this sooner, I tried the burry method because I didn’t have any time, the skull seems like it is deteriorating and braking apart, I wished I would have known more about maceration.
I like the fly shooter hanging up in the background lol
🤣🤣 Flies are the worse!
Great video. I have done all 3 methods with all the same pros and cons as you. I've been thinking about starting a small business cleaning a few skulls, so a business video would be great! I'm not sure what to charge for the work, could you suggest prices?
Om doing a hand full for people, and I'm doing them for free so far. I'm also thinking about doing this as a small business, once I retire from the fire department in 16 months. I'm trying to learn and get name out there. Around here most charge 75-80 dollars without the plaque.
@@stormvet91 I'm not wanting to rake people over the coals but would like something for my time and effort. $80 sounds fair to me. I enjoy doing it because I like seeing the finished product, From nothing to a nice display or conversation piece.
My best friend is a taxidermist and he charges $85 w/o $100 with plaque. Im also doing skull carving.lol
I apologize for the late response. As far as what to charge, it really depends on the animal we work on. Prices can range anywhere form $125-$450. I know that doesn't help much, but if you wanted to message us through our Instagram or Facebook page we would be happy to elaborate.
@@OurTopPinLife no worries I know people get busy
I do euros for family and friends and few other ppl and I boiling and whitening in pot but I also paint for some select ppl but I don't use spray paint I use chalk paint topped with floor polish and it looks as good as whitening
Sounds like a cool process!
@@OurTopPinLife I actually like the boil and whitening method better alot less work. Question have you ever had to rebuild a skull?
Awesome videos, I have a question about a skull that was found and it must of been hit by a truck and was decaying and it still has the cape on the skull that has adhered to the skull, I am soaking it with Dawn dish soap at this time. I hope it helps loosen up the fur so I can start taking it off. Is this a good idea?
I like watching your videos
Thanks for joining us!
is it possible to whiten a dead head that ma nature took care of to a point? some hair still on it but most meat gone. and if so what the best method? please and thank you
Check out our taxidermy playlist. We have a video covering this
What products have you used in boiling for degreasing? Also do you usually monitor the water temp when boiling?
I've tried just about everything imaginable and I prefer clear ivory. I do not monitor the temp, I keep them between a simmer and a boil.
Any tips on fixing euro mounts? I didn’t have a deep enough pot to fully submerge an elk skull while boiling and the top of the pedicle didn’t whiten. Any advice?
Honestly I would get a big enough pot and start again.
I’m sure you addressed this but, What type and strength of peroxide?
I've got several other videos on my channel that discuss this.
Can you use beetles then use the "simmer" decrease method to speed up the decreasing process?
I've tried it and it did not work for me
So I have a nice one from about 12 years ago I tried boiling it all yuck is gone for the most part but how do I get it white
Go back about a year ago on my videos and you can find my video on how I whiten.
Type of heater do you have in your freezer?
Also I don't recommend someone hanging there skull in a tree or something and let bugs eat on it. Seems the few I've done thats been hung up, it seems I can't get completely decreased.
Also would like to check out your taxidermy business on social media, I don't have Facebook. Never have and never will. Guess I'll keep an eye out on RUclips for any videos. Thxs
We use a heat lamp in the maceration tank. I think that may be what you are asking. Hanging them from a tree would work, but you would still need to degreased after that. All the bugs will do it clean the meat off. Hope this helps!
Great video 😁
Appreciate it.
What do you think about using maggots
It would be the same obstacles as using beetles
What is the song at the beginning ?
Not sure the name. It is a stock one on our editing software.
Do you have a supplier for plauques
Where can I get beetles at?
Haven't used them in years. Not sure
Ok thanks
Business videos?
We still need to do this!
35% peroxide cleans the skull pearly white in a very short amount of time.
You can't get that in our state with out a license
Why dosnt any one use the jaw in the mount
People do request to keep it but it's rare.
I found a 11 point. One point was broke. Horns skull spine. No ribs. He fought for girls but out done by cyotes. Looking for best way to mount. With respect
Everyone has water and a burner....problem solved
I can do a skull in 6 hours
