So I feel like I’m definitely in information overload but I also feel like I learn something new about how embroidery works every time I tune in. So Jeff, I take it you never been to Michigan,eh? Quick state history lesson. Michigan is surrounded by 4 of the Great Lakes. The state is divided into : peninsulas. The upper peninsula ( that’s where I live ) and the lower peninsula. We’re connected to each other by the Mackinac bridge. So lots of times when I refer to my state I clarify that I am from the upper peninsula vs the lower which is all the Lviv cities like Detroit, etc. down state is more manufacturing. In the U.P. We’re more the forestry, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, tourist division of the state. Hence we often refer to ourselves as Yoopers because we live above the bridge and those who live below the bridge as trolls. Don’t feel bad there’s lots of trolls who don’t even realize where part of michigan either. In fact when you look at some maps they don’t put us with michigan either. They either have us connected with Wisconsin, Minnesota, or even part of Canada. Ask Mountain Dew company. So enough of that. I really do have a embroidery question. So I went to balboa site & wow what beautiful work . My friend, Diane, had Victor digitize her dog Oscar for her--simply said-- wow!!! So to get to the question, ( sorry, Jeff, I guess your not the only yacky person,) so if a person was doing up a portrait of something like that what would you suggest the material backing would be? In my mind I see canvas (can a person even embroidery on canvas?) or I keep thinking & picturing the old tapestry that you saw women embroidering on in the past that are still around in museums today? I was thinking I would maybe like to make one of my kids who has 3 dogs & 2 cats something like that for Christmas. But if I’m going to spend the extra for real a digitizer to do all the work from a photograph( they can be done from a photo right?) I would like it to last the generations, maybe? I’m a quilter! I mostly use quilters cotton. I’ve dabbled with other mediums some. Kinda hit & miss but was just looking for some options from youse guys. Thanks-Bevyjean
I would stick to a popplin or twill. I would lean more towards a popplin fabric though. I recently did some larger designs and they turned out great. You can embroider canvas but it can be an issue depending on the weave.
