My wife was cooking steak one evening and the raccoons must have smelled it and came in the dog door. When my dog saw the two raccoons, it started barking. One raccoon ran back out the dog door. The other ran behind the refrigerator and tried to climb into the back of the refrigerator and got stuck. It took me two hours to get him free. Once I got the refrigerator out the back door as seen in this video and he didn't leave, that is when I realized he was stuck and not only scared to come out. I had to slide a broom handle under the refrigerator and gently poke him in the nose. This scared him so he started trying to pull himself out. Constant pulling himself backwards, it still took several minutes for him to get his head out of the refrigerator. To this day there is a hole in the press-board and insulation on the back of my refrigerator.
Years later after my dog died of old age, raccoons would come in the dog door every night around 2am and eat the cat food. One night I was up late sitting on the couch playing video games. The raccoon came in and was trying to sneak. Watching me as it slowly crept up to the cat food bowl. Then it sat there watching me, reaching in the cat food with it's hand eating. It never took it's eyes off me as it ate the entire bowl.
The dog door has a panel to close it so nothing can get in, but then the cats couldn't go outside. Two of my cats would go outside an poop in the dirt under the back deck and other places outside. So I didn't have to clean their litter-box. One cat completely refused to use a litter-box, even though I had 4 litter-boxes in different areas for the three cats. Only one timid house cat who stayed in the bedroom and refused to go outside used a litter box. This is why I didn't want to shut the dog door.
Only now that I have more dogs again, have the raccoons stopped coming in at night.
