“Once I Was” might be the saddest Jeff performance recorded. Makes me sob... near the end it sounds like he’s about to as well, can barely muster a “Thank you” at the end.
You are doing a far better and much more historically important job than the 'Estate' who wait 20 years to put out incomplete collections when we're crying out for everything ever.
I want to hear anything ever sang by Jeff Buckley.
@@truefunksoul8638 Wow, this is gold, thank you!!!!
I don’t know what they are waiting for. I am 2 years older than Jeff. Been following him since I saw Mojo pin video on MTV. Point is we are all getting older, I don’t get why they don’t release more music/video, because I would certainly buy it in a second.
@@Oyuki-Mayonesa or everything
😔 It’s so confusing why Tim never acknowledged Jeff. He had no idea how lucky he was to have Jeff as a son, this was a phenomenal tribute. Jeff never let his father go, regardless of how he was treated. That really is Grace.
Erm....Dream Letter?
Jeff said Tim had a horrible father. All Tim could see himself being, if he were in Jeff’s life, was a terrible father. That is at least what Jeff believed.
he was an asshole. he knew he fucked up when he met jeff but it was too late. he died 2 months later
Tim's father was quite an abusive and frightening man and Tim was apparently scared of repeating the same mistakes that his father had made with Jeff. He also believed early on that he would die young so he chose to commit himself entirely to his music while he could. There's no doubt he loved Jeff and missed him dearly and his regret and sadness at having to leave was the crux of the pain he communicated in his songs.
His rendition of Once I Was is pure heaven. Absolutely fantastic. What a guy.
Overwhelming
I’m literally sobbing! I wish it was recorded better. Might’ve been Jeff’s most emotional performance.
Phantasmagoria is one of my favourite Tim Buckley songs but those yodellings and all kinda ruined it for me. I wish it was only Jeff who sang.
Oh what I would kill for a HQ version of this
24:44 you hear his guitar string break, which sets up the perfect a cappella ending. divine intervention?
What an attentiveness
Perfect
Absolutley spellbinding and profoundly Fated for Jeff's Closure...appreciate you pointing out broken String/A Cappella ending.
I believe this was Jeff seeking closure.. Can you imagine being the abandoned child singing this whilst knowing you've only been asked because you look and sound like that man? You can hear it in his vocals.... It's a fuck you! And a statement to the fans... "I am not a lyric to envoke empathy for a metaphorical father and his unknown child, I'm a person, and I'm real, and this is the outcome. He did this to my mother and I."
Unfortunately it feels like it was lost on them? Who am I to say, though.
Believe request for Jeff to participate at St. Ann's was Tim's Manager asked him. He knew about Jeff...did what was appropriate due to fact Jeff not invited to Tim's Funeral. Jeff indicated Closure for Him and asked Not to be recognized by name@St.Ann's tribute. Heartbreaker !
@@BehindtheseEyes yes, from what I know, you're right. Jeff didn't even wanna go until he was bombarded and conceded to make it a moment to put himself in their faces. I feel?
Heartbreaking, breathtaking performance. Thank you Jeff, for everything you have done
Amazing that this record exist
Too bad nobody anticipated the historic importance of these performances and got some decent recording technology in place for this.
Really, there’s still an audience for Tim’s work, too.
Somebody probably has a better recording. It just hasn’t been released to the public. I find it hard to believe in a room of musical artists there isn’t a soundboard recording. I bet there is, somewhere.
Oh and I am sure there is video of this whole show also. I bet my record collection on it ;)
oh AI will fix this recording in the near future, no worries
you deserve heaven
40 seconds of applause after I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain.... All that needs to be said
Merci Tim et Jeff
I don’t think people realize how significant it was-that Jeff decided to play “I never asked to be your mountain”.
Maybe I’m misinterpreting that song, but I’ve always thought that was clearly about Jeff, his Mother, and Tim.
And if I’m being honest…
Although I think it’s an amazing song-I’ve always thought its “message” was absolutely disgusting, and made Tim seem like a piece of shit.
Maybe I’m just interpreting it in that way because I also don’t have a relationship with my father…
But it sounds like Tim was saying “I never asked to be your mountain… i.e. I didn’t ask for all of this… so you can’t be mad at me for not being around”.
i mean that was written around when he was born, so i’m sure that included his conflicting feelings at the time. i think in the song dream letter, he shows his regrets towards the situation
I think you’re exactly spot on. I think Tim wrote it for Mary and Jeff from the documentaries I’ve seen about it. And exactly, the meaning is, I never asked for this, to have a child etc. I feel the same, I love the song but it actually makes Tim look bad because he abandoned his son and wife basically
@@mikesweetwater3209 Dream Letter is about Jeff and Mary too. He directly sings to her that he thinks about them ''how are you and my child''...
Rest and peace Jeff
After 9:03 ...his vocal craziness!
WOW amazing... he sings with so much emotion.
I was driving a taxi at that time and remember dropping off quite a few people there from time to time. Jeff look familiar so I could have driven him
dude......you were probably apart of history.
Right on! History!
To forgive is to truly love. I think Jeff had found forgiveness for his father.
Beautiful ❤️
Makes me cry 😭 Makes me feel 😁 Soooo beautiful 💜
Stunning....weeping
Surreally beautiful !
Wish I could have been there
was anyone here actually there? It's on my bucket list when I die and can travel through various events in time
I was there. It was bone chillingly amazing. My best friend was 13 years older than me, and had introduced me to Tim Buckley's music. Jeff was soon to start performing around NYC after this, but this was a trial by fire. The whole show was a knockout emotionally. I also saw him play St. Ann's church again with his own band during Grace, which was another amazing night.
@@amu444 That’s wild that you were there. Good for you!
omg thank you beyond words!!
Wow that's really great!
Bless you for posting this
Great piece of music history.
Pity that Meredith Monk and Yoko Ono felt the need to rush the stage for "Phantasmagoria In Two"
nah
Thanks for this
Thanks Gary Lucas! If it wasn't for you these interpretations would never have existed!
Greetings from Italy!
..magic...
"don't leave me again this way"
8:27
I can't think of many lyrics more heartbreaking than those.
WTF is Yoko Ono singing with Jeff Phantasmagoria?
bhahaha this was exactly my though lmao
I wish I could silence her voice!
Yeah, they really butchered Phantasmagoria
i would spin for your love

the rest wasnt wrong but Those yoddelings ruined the phantasmagoria rendition
To each his own Joaquin! I kind of dug them man.
Yes I agree...Jeff would have nailed it!why couldn't they left him sing this song alone???
Anyone know the chords to this?
One of the worst intrusions into music=Yoko Ono, John Lennon why?
can't wait for AI to turn this into a perfect recording
The cover of Phantasmagoria is just awful. Beautiful song butchered by hacks.
Disagree Chuck!!
Sucks its such a terrible recording
RIP Jeff. I prefer Tim's voice a lot more, however.
Not me, I love Jeff's music. They both have something that is haunting in their vocals. Each of them are beautiful equally.
Of course everything Jeff Buckley does makes it great! He turns mediocrity into a masterpiece. He was an incredible talent just an amazing artist, the father was though quite mediocre.
Dude, Tim was one of the most innovative and talented artists of his time, there's stuff he made that we still haven't caught up with, his work hasn't sold as well as Jeff's but he definitely wasn't mediocre. Don't forget, he was the one who wrote all these songs.
Tim was way more talented as composer and singer-songwriter.
Holy shit
