    what ive heard from someone who studied food science, the reason those savers dont do anything is because the ethylene is what triggers the decomposition/ripening process... once it has started it doesnt really matter anymore (at least with bananas)
    and bananas that you buy have already had that process started, so they arent green anymore (they are prevented from maturing before being transported, so they dont go off and then triggered on the last mile so they ripen by the time they are sold)
    not sure about other fruit - but for bananas, thats precisely why that kind of thing does absolutely nothing

    • @Quest723The
      @Quest723The Год назад +33

      Other fruits (plus bananas) you can put them in a paper bag and trap the gas, causing them to ripen faster. So if you're trying to make a peach cobbler by a certain date and your fruit isn't quite ready you can bag them up the day or two before and get more usable ones.
      With bananas if you want to slow the process down, separate them from the cluster so they're not egging on each other's ripening.

    • @SharienGaming
      @SharienGaming Год назад +29

      @@Quest723The still does not matter for bananas - the ripening has already started and it happens inside the peel... whatever you do outside has negligible to no influence beyond potentially changing how fast the peel browns...which doesnt really matter for the banana itself
      afaik the best thing you can do to keep fruit fresh for longer is to just store them in a fridge (well not bananas - those funnily enough are better to store at room temp)

    • @maromania7
      @maromania7 Год назад +19

      @@jellycatfish ...everything can be used with bad intentions. A spoon could. Your hands can kill. That's a really sad outlook on life. You might be surprised, I know I was.

    • @JimiPain
      @JimiPain Год назад +10

      @@jellycatfish The thing with this resealers is, that once you open the package they're exposed to air. There is a reason why chip bags aren't fill to the brim other than greediness. They're filled with a gas that preserves them better than air.
      The resealing still helps, though I might think you're better off buying a regular hair straigthner, they go for pretty much the same price, are bigger and heat up quicker.

    • @jellycatfish
      @jellycatfish Год назад +5

      @@maromania7 I don't think I have a sad outlook on life, and I wouldn't have mentioned this if someone had not said that this could be used as a pranking tool. Assuming that I might need a psychiatrist because of one RUclips comment, and that I always see things this way, is kind of rude, and to be honest, hurtful. Of course everything can be used with bad intentions, I've never said otherwise. I am a fan of true crime, and recently watched a video about the Tylenol tampering case in Chicago in the 70s. I guess that's why my brain went that way.

      As so many say, do I need a piece of kit for one job? I don't drink coffee, so it really would just be as a spice blender. I use my vacuum sealer on seal-only mode all the time on chip bags and other plastic bags. It's a great trick if you already have a vacuum sealer, but I'm not sure how good a stand-alone unit like that is.
    The ethylene absorber is interesting, because they work commercially. It's also the reason behind techniques like putting something in a paper bag to ripen it faster - that concentrates the ethylene. I suspect they don't work on all fruit, or it was just left out too long and bacteria started to break it down.

    @6:52 i work at a company that makes the bags for Crisps, and other snacks, the way the bag is structured is usually a layer of polyethene/polypropylene film (print layer) layer of molten Poly beads, a metal film layer, another layer of molten poly, then another clear film to seal it. the clear film is what usually is melted when sealing bags of this nature, not the metal. there are also bags for like candy bars that use a glue to seal, not heat (cold seal), thats why when you sealed the candy bars, the plastic melted to the sealer (it was not meant to be sealed with heat.

    I think it'd be hilarious if y'all could get Alton Brown to come on the show and participate in a game and/or review some gadgets with Ben. I bet the sealed clingfilm bowls trapped too much moisture for the ethylene gas removal to make much difference. When I want to preserve stuff in the crisper, it’s all about loose wrapping with paper towels to absorb moisture. I’d be interested in seeing how the stickers work in those conditions.

    I think wrapping the fruit was the wrong move. The Saver may absorb gas, but I think it's meant to be kept a bit farther away and not left in direct contact with the fruit it's supposed to be saving. You're still isolating all the gas right there in the bowl instead of drawing it away. It's like you're trying to remove the water from a tub by just dropping a towel in it and see what happens.

    • @midgetfriendodog
      @midgetfriendodog Год назад

      Yeah but if your not wrapping it is the etheline gas not escaping anyway?

    • @AngryAlfonse

      @@midgetfriendodog the issue is specifically with a fridge drawer, where it's not an airtight container but there isn't much movement of air.
      Also, I think refrigeration would help, because the time difference between ripening, over ripening, rotting and molding is extended with refrigeration.

      @@midgetfriendodog Exactly. Which is why you separate bananas from the bundle if you don't want them ripening past where they are. Pretty much just need airflow. I bet the stickers work better if you throw them in the fridge crisper drawer.

    I think the ethylene thing could work really well but you should know that some fruit is a heavy ethylene producer whereas other fruit is very ethylene sensitive, so that should be taken into consideration when selecting the fruit and I also wouldn't keep it covered with cling film since that is just a recipe for mould growth. I generally keep the ethylene sensitive produce away from the rest which works just fine, except with berries which just don't survive long unfortunately. would be interesting to see you try this thing out in the fridge as well.

      Classic. We did this when I worked in theatre. We'd ask them "could you go find us a filter 130?" (which is a transparent colourless filter, useless to have separate, it's only used in lighting eguipment that has a rotating reel of filters that can be remotely switched. In a static light fixture, you'd just have it without a filter.) So if they returned having not found it, we'd say "ah, no matter, we'll just go open white then.".

    I've never used the food discs but I do use the food saver bags from Lakeland and they work really well. Stick your broccoli in there and it'll stay ok for weeks. Much less of an effect with already ripe fruit but you'll get a little. Root veg and green stuff they work well, fruit less so I find. Also reusable for maybe up to 3 months so good value and available in 3 sizes.
