The Four Gentlemen, also called the Four Noble Ones, in Chinese art refer to four plants: the plum, the ever-enduring blossom in the desolate winter; the orchid, the graceful harbinger of spring; the bamboo, the summer plant to symbolize strength and integrity; the chrysanthemum, the last vibrant beauty before the coming of a dark winter. So Bamboo being 3 and Chrysanthemum being 4 is correct. 梅兰竹菊 is the right order. Sometimes we see 梅兰菊竹, that one is the wrong.
