    I got a different set from YMI 2 years ago, an American Mahj set. It arrived on time, no damage, and everything included. Travel bag, racks, wind indicator and coins etc. Excellent company, I intend to get a Riichi and Chinese set from them one day so my family can master each style throughout our lifetimes. Great review, thank you :)

      That's true! I was always really curious about what kind of tiles parlours like that would actually be using back in the 50s, and it's likely that those tiles would have actually been bamboo and probably bone or something like urea/acrylic. The tiles in that show use modern tile faces, but that's pretty common for all mahjong manga series regardless of the period they're set it.

    After watching this I ordered a set off Amazon from YMImports but with the large version tiles vs the standard size. Thanks for making these product review videos. I’d never considered Riichi for my first mahjong set but in part since watching a couple of your videos today I’ve gone this route. I’ve still got a mountain climb in terms of learning the rules but it now begins… Also would you ever consider providing English commentary over Riichi professional matches? I watched two women’s matches where a couple of American pros had English commentary and it was pretty cool. Unfortunately there only seems to be 2 of such videos on RUclips. Anyways thanks for your work!

    • @RiichiMahjongCentral
      @RiichiMahjongCentral  2 года назад

      With the copyright issue, it’s hard to use the actual video and add commentary over it, but we did a few with M-League games where I did the audio only. You just have to play the video link in the description simultaneously!

    My set arrived yesterday. It's my first set, so I've nothing to compare to, but the tiles themselves are very nice. They seem well made, and are consistent with pretty much no defects - if I was to nitpick, one of my 3-sou tiles is a little underpainted, but not a huge issue. They were smaller than I expected, not being familiar with standard sizing, and having only seen the game played with larger tiles, but I think I might like them this way. The tile designs look great, with a two-tone black and maroon colour scheme (with a brighter red for the red doras), although I think I'd have preferred if they included some dark green on the relevant soh and dragon tiles. I love the shade of yellow used on the backs, which is actually pretty close to the one I use in my profile icon!
    The other accessories are not of the same standard as the tiles, but are adequate. The case is attractive enough, if not the sturdiest. The trays are cheap moulded plastic, and the one for the dice and points sticks was cracked, but still functional. The dice are irregularly sized and shaped, which would be catastrophic for some games, but Mahjong can get away with it, I think. The points sticks are, again, cheap plastic, with inconsistent paint work, and some sprues still attached - might take an emery board to them to tidy them up a bit.
    There are exactly enough points sticks for a 30,000 point game. This is the standard for Europe, as I learned from the included rulebook issued by the European Mahjong Association, which I assume YMI only put in the boxes sold in this region, but was a nice addition.
    Overall, for the price, I'd definitely recommend the set. The quality of the tiles, which are the most important factor, more than make up for the shortcomings elsewhere.

    • @RiichiMahjongCentral
      @RiichiMahjongCentral  2 года назад

      Thanks for the great comment! I think others can benefit from this! As for the point sticks, the “modern” color point sticks are becoming the new standard, and as of now, YMI does not have them for sale. If you’re interested in getting those, check out our friend’s site at MJ Stars!

    That set looks beautiful! I'm from the Philippines and my friends and I are have been looking for a riichii set with the tenbou sticks. It is crazy hard finding riichii sets here in the PH since Filipino Mahjong uses the Chinese set without the point sticks and without the Red Doras.

      Me too. I also just have a typical Chinese mahjong set that doesn't use any of the tenbou sticks and Red Doras. I agree to what you have said. It would be crazy hard to find a Riichi/Japanese Mahjong set here in the Philippines. What I just did is that I used 4 white popsicle sticks and made my own homemade 1,000 points sticks. :-)

    Do you have a source for the larger tiles, say around 33 mm which I think is what most in Japan use. I'm looking for larger tiles or tiles sets.

    • @RiichiMahjongCentral
      @RiichiMahjongCentral  4 года назад +1

      33s are considered larger for hand shuffle tiles, unless you are looking for automatic table tiles, which are larger in general. Chinese mahjong tile sets are 33 and I’ve played with 36s in the past! You can still use the same tiles for what ever rule but the designs are slightly different.
      That being said, I don’t have any sources for those size other than your regular online sites. Maybe Yellow Mountain Imports has more now?

      @@RiichiMahjongCentral You're right about the size. I play Cantonese style with 40mm tiles. They are great. I'm not looking for the mag. tiles used in tables, but the 23mm are just too small. I'll keep looking though :)
