The correct answer to birthday question is not to ask them if they know when yours is, but frame it as “hey I am so sorry I am drawing a blank and it’s driving me crazy, when’s your birthday again?” Then they tell you theirs and either ask when yours is and or you at least have a comfortable way to go “oh thanks, by the way I can’t remember it I ever told you mine, it’s on xyz!“ That opens the whole birthday discussion about what each of you prefers for your birthdays without coming off like “HEY DO YOU KNOW MY BIRTHDAY OR ARE YOU A BAD FRIEND” and instead feels more natural.
