Dakshin Gangotri was the first scientific base station of India situated in Antarctica, part of the Indian Antarctic Programme. It is located at a distance of 2,500 kilometres (1,600 mi) from the South PoleIt was established during the third Indian expedition to Antarctica in 1983-84. This was the first time an Indian team spent a winter in Antarctica to carry out scientific works. The station was built in eight weeks by an 81-member team that included geologist Sudipta Sengupta.
Maitri also known as Friendship Research Centre, is India's second permanent research station in Antarctica as part of the Indian Antarctic Programme. The name was suggested by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Work on the station was first started by the Indian Expedition which landed there in the end December 1984, with a team led by Dr. B. B. Bhattacharya.

@@AMANVERMA-ss3wg first i feel proud of my country , then these type of b*ch type bs comments and i get demotivated because if this is the youth which is future of our country then we are done for . if our own people arent proud of our achievement and comparing it to others then whats the difference between them and a pakistani/chinese . atleast pakistani/chinese/Europeans are living in their country but these people are worse . they critisize their country while living in it . one good thing about pakistanis is they are always proud of their country no matter how bad their country's economy , military etc. is while we cry because some rich , developed and established nations did something better than us .

When Maitri station was completed and commissioned leader of neighboring (then) Soviet station Novolazarevskaya teased that all imported American British material. I dragged him and structure prefabricated at Pune, generators were Kirloskar, boilers were Thermax, pumps were KSB, bulldozer BEML, HF radio sets Punwire and my own watch HMT. Which of these are American, we are much more advanced than you.
