How to Kill or Contain Runaway Bamboo- 3 Methods

- They lied when they sold us clumping bamboo. It turned out to be running bamboo. Here is what we did to kill and contain it permanently. In the video we mix the killing solution, administer it, and do a check up on it after 1 month. We have another video follow up 2 years after this .

The runaway bamboo was invasive and sprouting in our neighbors yard. Killing it, we needed some methods because it can be difficult. We used Round up on one cluster. Then we used vinegar salt and detergent on another cluster. Finally we covered it all in black plastic and hoped the sun would work.

Don't know unless you dig them up to see if the bamboo is really dead. If they keep poppin up then it is still alive. They are most active in the spring, if you keep cutting them they will appear to simmer down but really they are just spreading underground until the next spring when they pop up in other further areas along the bamboo run.
sometimes this can be true, but you can get it all!
Just looking at sites and videos about this it seems there is a need to dig down at least 3 feet.
If possible I would consider shoveling out all of the ground at least three feet down. Sift out every iota of the Bamboo plants.
Then there are plastic underground borders that can be buried. Some sites say to not count on concrete to block the bamboo roots.
It also seems a question of how many feet out the roots will spread and how fast. How much can the ground be completely covered? What to cover the ground with regarding this?

Just a thought, Glysophate (roundup) has a half life of six hours and becomes inert in soil.. Salt and Vinegar remain forever as salt and acidic content in your soil and will eventually wash into a water source. I have cleared allot of runaway plants (not bamboo though). I recommend consistent application of boiling water or a weed torch which explodes the cells of the plant and roots starving it. This leaves nothing behind but water. BTW, I do know bamboo well and any small portion of broken cane near the node will shoot roots if left laying on the ground, so be careful throwing away those canes you snapped off at the end of the video. Good luck, I'm three years in chasing catsclaw creeper, Chinese Talo and Cockscomb on my property but should see the end of it this summer.
We have had no adverse reaction to the soil and it is now 2018.
I have to say I've been at it over 20 years and it's a full time job it has completely taken over around here everytime I think I have defeated it and I have used road salt dissolved in water and sprayed it immediately into the stobs... It's the only thing that held it back at all for a good amount of tims....and yes i dug up everything in the areas i cleared and even sifted the dirt....letting what you dif up dry a day or two makes it easy to leave the soil... unfortunantly I had to be out of town alot a few years ago when my mother was very sick.... And it all grew back like it was mad. Not only is the bamboo a problem we have something I call saw briar as well and it's just as horrible. On top of that now my bamboo some of my crepe myrtle and some of my other ornamental have some crazy shit called witches broom....it freaks me out alot. It is alien looking and it makes them all look like the leaves if the bamboo are coming out if the other plants.....Lord Jesus help me

@@Aplldh Glyphosate is broken down by bacteria in the soil, I think you are confusing its uptake into food sources like oat based foods that cant break it down or people not wearing correct ppe having dermal absorption?

Hey guys. I found a sure way to get rid of bamboo, sort of by accident. I had bamboo growing and invading my lawn from a swamp and had a losing battle controlling it. The solution is mineral oil. Yes, the stuff you spray on fences to treat them. Cut it down as low much as you can, then soak the soil in mineral oil. I did it last year and it's still dead and not coming back.
Do you have some before/after pictures? We've had the best luck with just finding a rhizome and pulling it up and then digging out the clumped areas.

That's how I do it as well. Very tough work and definitely does not prevent shoots at the end site. But still the best at removing clumps and thinning spread. I have a serious love hate relationship with my bamboo because removal is never ending, give it one season of neglect and you have three seasons of removal. I have recently just began crafting with it and have found a more harmonious existence. Makes great baskets , waddle fences, and matts if split thin enough.
Digging clumps is hard work and tears up the yard. Our methods work out great for us.
I had a patch of bamboo that was huge. I killed it all by cutting the bamboo down leaving about three inches above the node nearest the ground. Then i used a small funnel and poured an ounce or so of roundtop concentrate (do not dilute) into the hollow stem. It was dead in its tracks. It killed the whole runner.

Liked your vid. In such a large area though I was lucky enough to have a neighbour who had a Bobcat and we ripped it all up in one day. Machine just ripped into it effortless. Made a mess but the upturned soil created by ripping up roots was marvellously aerated afterwards!

That's what I am thinking about doing. Otherwise it's just like WWI trench warfare that starts up every April and goes into the beginning of May. The only good thing is that the main battle is April/May. Me and my neighbor may rent a bobcat and get a digging permit for my yard and just dig up 2 feet in all direction.
Be sure to kinda let it dry out it happens pretty quick after it's dug up and really take through and get every stinking piece of it or it will come.right back before you know what happened. Road salt over saturated in water works very well as long as you cut it and have someone right behind you filling up the stobs with it ...let that die back first and then dig it up like your saying. Slot less of a mess and I let the canes dry put and usually have people asking for them and what I have left I burn. One day I will keep at it until it is gone. My mother being sick took me away for a long while before I had much time to devote to it against it had come back up where it had taken me years of work.... in less than one season...and I dug up everything and sifted my soil!
RoundUp is unquestionably the best treatment in my opinion. However, the best non-poisonous treatment is the 4mil black plastic that you experimented with but didn't quite do right, if I may say so. You need to lay the plastic down and then COVER it with anything you like, such as mulch, crushed granite, whatever. This allows the plastic to survive for many, many years (5-7 minimum) while also disallowing the bamboo to come through. The sad news is that if you should ever remove the plastic and whatever is covering it, the bamboo rhizomes are still right there just waiting to be resurrrected, and in no time flat (first rain especially), they'll be right back to haunt you. In one very large yard that I have I covered the entire yard in 4mil black plastic and then crushed granite. Bamboo shoots did popup, but ONLY on the peripherphy of the plastic. As these then became bunched in a single file and all close together, they became super easy to spot and treat with RoundUp, confining the poison to the smallest area possible and gradually pushing new shoots considerably farther away FROM the periphery of the plastic. Always use a mask, gloves and long sleeve shirt (not shorts, full pants) when working with RoundUp. Always always always. Thanks for your video. I'm going to try the Vingegar approach without covering it and see what happens. BTW, you do NOT have to cover those shoots treated with RoundUp. They will start dying within a few days and turn totally brown in about 2 weeks.

I would like to retract my positive comment concerning RoundUp. The poison definitely killed the bamboo, but it spread to the root system of a nearby magnificent Southern Magnolia and wiped it out, leaf by leaf, branch by branch. Nothing I could do would stop it. It was a 4" Magnolia about 12' tall. I've had cut it back to something closer to 4' and remove ALL branches to within perhaps 1' of the trunk. It will be decades before it revives but I didn't have it in my heart to just go ahead and kill it.. RoundUP? NEVER AGAIN.

You can tell how healthy the area/surrounding area is...just listen to the background. Birds chirping etc...lots of places have begun to spray pesticides for mosquitoes etc. & it's killed everything. Especially in touristy areas.
its a very healthy area....but year over year...probably less pesticides being used now than in the 60's or 70's.
Hi, thanks for your video - it's very informative and useful. We have running bamboo in our garden but the house's past owners planted a clump of it very close to a tree that we love. How can we treat and dig up the roots of the bamboo without damaging the tree roots?
Also, the area in which we have bamboo root stumps looks awful. How long should we leave it before planting anything else and any ideas how to hide or make our bamboo wasteland look more attractive in the meantime. Cover with bark chippings perhaps?

Hello Emma Sarah, I would hesitate to use any of the chemical treatments(salt or roundup) I used.
If I had that problem, I would cut the bamboo as close to the ground as possible--reciprocating saw- then cover it with thick black plastic for about 1 month. Depriving it of water AND sunlight will damage the bamboo for sure. When you remove the plastic, a lawn mower should be able to cut any shoots that begin to pop up. It may take a year or two to kill it all, but it will eventually happen. Good luck.
Hi, thanks for answering my question. We've cut it close to the ground and will cover now. I'm putting a table over the plastic too and we can use the area as a bird feeding station while waiting for the bamboo to die off. I'm surprised a lawn mover will go over it - I'd have thought it would break the blades, but will tell my partner your advice. Also try dig a long root up and place in a bucket of sails water and vinegar and let it suck it up
you could grab a 12x16 tarp. put it down.. thats what im gonna do. cause i dont want it growing at all. the roots go deep so cover large area will help more.. and if u kill the grass you can always replant the grass
Sometimes you need the nasty chemicals. The bamboo the previous idiot planted near the house has gone under my slab! Also grown into my grout lines on my block house in south Florida. It’s gonna be a nightmare to remove the thick dense mat of fibrous roots that took over one corner of my yard! 😖

Cut off the top of the shoot and eat it. Peel and chop into little cubes, stir fry with a little chopped pork and onion. Dash of seasoning. Pile onto rice.

It's April. Will do soon...too late has gone to neighbors property..not as difficult as I thought...I can purchase black liner that is used for bushes when you don't want grass growing underneath. I will continue removing chutes as they come out when I see them..thanks

@@SimplyBananas1 my brother told me to use kerosene..just pour in stalk after cutting..I thought using motor oil, that kills everything bit I have a dog and some cats so not a good idea on that.😁😁😁
So now it's April 2022 and I'm about to embark on killing out a grove probably 40 yards by 25 yards with roots tapping out 20 feet from the main Grove. Since the shoots are just now starting to appear I will start tomorrow by kicking the shoots and spraying straight RM 43 ( 43.68% Glysophate and 0.68 % Imazapyr) into the holes left after knocking the shoots out. Then I will begin cutting the bamboo stalks one by one applying RM43 in the stump of each bamboo cane and hopefully this will work on the root system spreading away from the main Grove and the grove itself. I take it your bamboo is all gone still with no emergence of new shoots.

We had the same Arundinaria Gigantea, it's a US native and we cut out the culms using a reciprocating saw, no chemicals. Hard work but has not come back.

Different Ideas: Extractigator - Uprooter(USA) - Pullbearer(Canada)- Tree Popper - Root Talon - Weed Wrench - Soak rhizome ends in bucket of Rock Salt Water or Salt Water - Pour 20% vinegar into cut bamboo to shock it plus Solarizing when it’s hot by covering with Black Plastic til it's all dead. The Uprooter you can probably pull everything up in a weekend.

I bought a house 4 months ago.and My neighbor has some on the fence between us. And it's all In my back yard by my vegetables plants and fruit trees I planted 2 months ago on the fruit trees. And 3 weeks ago on the vegetables.
I toke out so many roots. But looks like the roots keeps on coming. How should I tell my neighbors about it . Or should I call the city. And let them deal with it? Please advise 🙏

I pretty much sure that some bamboo tolerant to salt water, but not sure about acidic water. Also, cover up the bamboo shot is the right way. You also need to cut down the biggest bamboo cluster down and cover it up too to kill them all. Make sure you dig up rhizomes and the root of older bamboo.

If you do not kill the roots, they will come back. you might try 20% horticultural vinegar which is super potent and allow the vinegar to be drawn into the plants' roots. you are probably killing the tops with the heat and the salt, & sterilizing the ground.

The best way to get rid of bamboo is to slice it down with a saws-all, chop up the soil around the area where the bamboo was growing and then poor the round-up directly into the stem that sits about 2" above the ground. The roundup will go down into the stem and stretch about 1 meter or so into the route system. With the roots cut from the shovel chopping it and the round up spreading into the root system, the bamboo cannot spread or grow anywhere else.
Covering the area with a black bag or mat will only block out the sun. They can still grow if it rains because the soil will soften up around it and feed the roots. That's why you have new stems growing even after spraying. You have to dig the soil after chopping them down.
Keep in mind that bamboo does not need a lot of sun light to grow.
Rob, the black plastic was meant to heat up the soil to kill the bamboo more than block the sun. I have had some growth from the plastic, but most has been from shoots radiating from those spots.
Gotcha! When you pour the roundup into the open stem, the chemicals will be absorbed by the root and kill those 'extra shoots' that come from those stems. Good luck!
That makes sense.. I cut mine down as flush with the ground as close as I could get it then filled the stalk right away with round up heavy brush killer, without that extra few inches extending up from the ground, there would be less of a poison resavore to feed the system to kill it off.. Hell, leave a good 6" worth and let the killing begin!

I bought clumping bamboo that actually did stay clumped for about 5 years and then it reverted to the spreading kind.
That is not necessarily the case with all types.
Lack of management on your part 100%. Clumping bamboos are easy and only require root pruning twice a year to keep them in military precise arrangements. All done without any chemicals or substances.
Works better if you use 30% or 45% vinegar

Thank you for this video! How long did you keep the tarps on? Did you have to tarp off the additional sprouts that grew, or was plucking the strays sufficient to permanently eliminate rest of the bamboo?
The tarp was on for 30 days, more or less. It was hot weather, mostly 80's. I spot plucked the few additional strays.

Everything was effective to some degree... round up or vinegar plus black tarp seemed to work the best.
SIMPLE N EASY METHOD. Plant okra near the patch. Natural enemy, NO MORE BAMBOO.

Dig up the rhizomes with a bobcat or bust... even then you can't always get all of it but then you have easier control. All of it is easier said then done...

About 3 years later. We have just had over 3 months at very high temperatures like 38-39 deg Centigrade. With not a drop of rain for over 3 months.
Everything is dead and crispy, went yellow then white.
BUT here is the bamboo again, happy as can be.
When it is not busy putting up stalks with leaves, it is working away underground making its roots travel towards the direction of the sun. Then it appears again.
I regularly feed it very strong solution of Roundup and root killer. It thrives on it.
I have done everything that everybody has thought of except hire an enormous digger to sieve out all the bits of root. This I cannot do.
The ground is like a rock, nothing can penetrate it except bamboo. I would have to drill holes with a big drill or electric hammer drill/chisel to get into it.
If this house would sell I would move to another country.

it's not dead till you rip it out of the ground. those wilted bamboos? Yeah, not dead. The roots are there, getting water and dirt and all they need is a bit of light, which is there half the day.

Dear Mouth Breather faux horticulturist, I recorded this video in April 2014 and published it in May 2014....if you are paying attention, the year is now 2017. The bamboo is dead...it is not coming back after 3 and a half years...its not.

I've monitored it for over 3 years...droughts and and floods it is not a zombie.
I prayed for the bamboo to go away but it didn't, God has let me down, in fact he often lets me down and I'm beginning to think he doesn't give a shit about me, all I asked was this one little job, I wasn't asking for a new mustang for gods sake, I've been pretty loyal to him, this time I am a bit pissed off actually.

I have a guaranteed method thats worked for me, a pick, and elbow grease! Pull up all the roots and burn them, after a few backaches it'll be gone.

We use 7 mill black plastic sheeting for kill because we have to leave it down for a month. But we haven't dealt with bamboo
How did it work out?
Good on ya for trying but unfortunately your information is pretty much all incorrect. #1 - you cut a culm and applied round-up directly into the base of the culm. You have just wasted round-up. If you liken bamboo to a car, your pouring the round-up in to the exhaust. The proper way to use round-up would be to NOT cut the culm. Apply the round-up to the green leaves of the plant and nothing but the leaves. The leaves are the intake or the gas tank. Now through photosynthesis the round -up in being absorbed into the plants root system. This will in some cases take 2 applications, but will work. #2 - With the salt concoction...this really did nothing but kill off some top growth. You have done nothing to kill off the root system which is the machine that keeps producing new growth. Best thing to do is call a professional, not a local landscaper, but a professional in bamboo.
emdad506...hey thanks for visiting our channel... we are glad to have you...but before you say all my info is incorrect...you should check out our follow up video and see that these methods worked. I've been bamboo free for years. I'm a biologist and I understand plant vascular systems. Perhaps there is more than one way to skin a cat as the saying goes...despite what I did was "all incorrect", the method worked and that was point of the the videos...both of them.

There is out of control bamboo growing in my backyard from our neighbours . It has grown so Wild to the point that it is in between the concrete slab of my house and the back door and we feel like it will start growing under the house does anybody know any chemical that can kill this bamboo plant in this area?

Moso has one of the most delicious shoots out of all bamboo! Just boil them for 10-20 minutes to get rid of the cyanide compounds that it may contain.
There are TONS of tasty recipes using bamboo shoots. Try it sometime! :D
P.S. Smaller ones tend to be tastier.
I ate a shoot raw and it burned my throat and mouth. It was then I realized that it needed to be boiled first. Yum...cyanide!
Are you recommending they eat them as a containment and eradication method? They are not salmon, or chicken, you know. It is Bamboo and there are no "tasty" ways to prepare bamboo for human consumption. Whatever is done, it remains bamboo. Yuck.

@@josephreinhart8712 cooked bamboo shoots are super commonly utilized in many dishes in Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and other Asian cultures - so literally billions of people eat bamboo on the reg; I feel like billions justifies saying a ton, but maybe you have a different definition of a ton... Besides being tasty and adding an awesome crunch to stir-fry, bamboo actually helps aid in digestion, which is another reason for it's inclusion in various types of cuisine.
This actually makes no sense cause the bamboo is still growing underneath the ground, I have been pulling the roots out and it’s not an easy thing, l love it, it’s beautiful but so invasive, I like to make things with the bamboo, but I saw It growing in my neighbors yard🤒 yikes, pulling them out and planting them in pots

Never plant bamboo it always takes over the whole block over and over again its a vicious cycle even the clumping bamboo spreads
The state I live in requires us to remove invasive plants from our neighbors yards as well. I’m glad my neighbors like me.

Gary Diamond Bamboo roots rots fairly quickly in soil with moisture and good micro organism. It is not a problem in my yard.
Not true perhaps if your lucky to have such soil, its two years now I found a few in the ground that were dead but not sign of rotting they looked so good I thought they could be alive. Try it your self

There making it illegal in some states to plant Bamboo. If it grows onto your neighbor's yard they can make you remove it or have it removed at your cost. Its nasty invasive stuff.

They are! However, I ate one raw once and it tasted like death 💀 and affected my throat. I read layer that they needed to be boiled first!

Gasoline drops. Kill's. This is the answer. Not a whole mess of gasoline to intoxicate the soil. But yes' gasoline drops. It works. Gasoline will kill. Just don't light it. On 90 Degree Weather . Use common sense. Do it in a safely manner. And be patience. It works. Good luck.

Forget about gasoline too dangerous. We found out you can water it down with ocean salt water. It's not an easy task. To get rid of bamboo. Bamboo is very invasive. Salt water from the ocean. But you have to be careful it kills trees also. & Poison ivy. When superstorm Sandy came inland in Staten island, the salt water kill every living plant insight. Good luck.

I have been trying to kill a large patch of bamboo that someone planted in the garden before I bout the house keep trimming it down but it comes back! I need to get rid of it but there is a lot of wildlife, hedgehogs cats lizards and all sorts of stuff and down want to poison any animals :) suggestions welcome (keep it clean!!!) and so fed up of spending hours cutting ti back down to ground level :(

Anybody try getting rid of English ivy? It's just as bad as bamboo. Here in Asheville North Carolina, it's taken over a whole mountain in the city limits. The one behind the baseball stadium where they want to put a greenway. No more wild flowers! If your neighbor has it, watch out! It will move right into your yard too!

The problem with that is that is it will eventually 'run' into an area that you don't want or can cut. But I agree, lawnmowers work well on the young shoots.
If you cannot mow, then you go with a weed eater on the young tender shots

after you cut the bamboo very close to the ground cover with powdered borax soap and soak it lightly with water and it will rot the stups and root system...

Well, I bought it. It spread now I have to get rid of it. When you live your life when you don't kill things for food/clothing/shelter you will have a voice. Don't be a hypocrite.
Quit being stupid. God gave bamboo to another country. If your neighbor plants bamboo along a fence line, like mine has, it will go under it and invade your garden. Do you like to grow tomatoes in raised beds? I used to, now I can only grow bamboo. It has punctured a different neighbors pool liner as well.
