Today we are going to talk about the Colby Valve Ultimate Stems. We've had these valve stems for about 1.5 years now on the camper. We are going to go over what we think after putting over 10,000 miles on them right after this.
Why do you need the Colby valve's on your camper? Well, I personally believe that an RV TPMS is a must for anyone that takes long trips with their camper. A lot of people say "I don't need to buy that because I have a $2 tire gauge that works just as well." I'll tell you after you have a TPMS system save your butt one single time, you are a fan for life. I was on a trip home to TN from Myrtle Beach and when I was in Northern GA and about 20 miles from home I started getting an alarm, this was 8.5 hours into a 9-hour drive. Things were fine the whole time until I started getting a warning stating there was a fast leak in one of the trailer tires. After pulling over I noticed there was a gash in the sidewall of the tire. If I wasn't made aware of this, I'm sure it would have blown out and caused a lot of damage. All that is to say that if you have a TPMS and find it necessary there is a chance that the extra weight of the sensor on the rubber valve stem could theoretically cause so much centrifugal force that it could damage the valve stem. I actually did have this happen. It didn't happen on my trailer, but I did have it happen three times on my truck tires. My truck does have an integrated TPMS but I really liked that the Tireminder system gives you the air temperatures as well. I had this happen not once, not twice, but three times. The first time was actually on the same trip I just mentioned. We woke up one morning after sleeping at a Cabela's on the way to Myrtle Beach and had a leaking valve stem. The tire wasn't completely flat, but we drove over to the Costco next door and dropped the trailer. They put a new valve stem on. Given, it was the first time, we just went on doing the same thing. After having this happen a couple more times, I decided to take the sensors off of the truck because there were apparently no TPMS packs that have metal valve stems built in for the ram that I could find. I will say that I never once had a valve stem on my trailer leak. However, I was nervous about this, so I did order some metal stems, but when I went to three different tire shops for a second and third opinion, I was told that the metal valves I had would not work with the wheels on my Keystone Cougar because of the wheel profile. They also stated they didn't have a solution for my problem of trying to get a rigid valve stem with these wheels.
After I had given up on finding a solution, I was having a conversation with a contact at Tireminder and they suggested the Colby ultimate stems. After I watched a few product reviews on them I decided to give them a try. They were easy to install as you didn't even have to jack the wheel off the ground. You just grab the rubber stem with a pair of pliers, I used a hand towel to place against the wheel so that when you twist the factory stem off, it doesn't scratch the wheel. My advice is to let all the air drain from the tire, then all you do is to place the stem snuggly into the hole. Then you take a 7/16" socket or wrench to tighten the nut on the stem. As you tighten the nut it causes the rubber seal to spread over a cone-shaped base which seals the valve stem in the wheel.

I like the idea but had no idea the centrifugal force would damage the stems 😮

Discount tire does tpms rebuild stems that are metal, I had them on two different campers now, and I will say that this last time(about ten days ago now) I had to argue with them about it, the long time employee kept telling me we don't do that anymore. The manager finally heard the argument, he went out into the shop without saying a word, when he return he set four of them on the counter infront of the 25yr employee, and said yes we do. I can be an ass at times and said get that man a raise. Anyway they do still do it, you have to tell them to use the tpms rebuild valve stems, and might have to ask for the manager. Hoping the manager is worth a damn.
