    Hi! I’m a second grade teacher and I also work at a pyp school. I’m brand new in this program and at the beginning everting was overwhelming, so thanks for showing this video because I made me notice I’m not as lost as I thought.
    I loved your video and I would like you to talk more about the program like ideas for teaching using activities from the program.
    The video inspired me a lot!
    Thanks 😊

      Nice! That IB diploma is very valuable when it comes to college searching. The little ones go through the PYP (primary years program) and then the MYP (middle years program) before the DP one. I wish I was lucky enough to go though it as a kid.

    • @izzahnazri101
      @izzahnazri101 5 лет назад +1

      Dustin M. It is valuable 😁 But I must say it was really challenging haha. It's a great program nonetheless. One of the things I like was how comprehensive the program was compared to other preparation programs in Malaysia. We get to learn subjects that were not related to our intended major which was nice.
      I see..the PYP program looks really fun tho. I think what's lacking in the public education system in Malaysia (at least primary/secondary) is for students' voices to be heard. Often schools just focus on covering the syllabus and expect students to absorb them and reproduce them in exams without giving students the flexibility to reflect on their understanding and thoughts about a topic.

    • @DustinRoonz
      @DustinRoonz  5 лет назад +1

      Well said! Sadly, it's not just the public system here in Malaysia but almost everywhere else... Panama and USA included. But at the same time, you have to find educators willing to take risks and try things that may go well or go wrong and be ok with something failing... or find educators willing to create a whole curriculum rather than show up and just simply teach from a book. I think until you see that shift in philosophy from the universities teaching future educators to be more open to this style, it'll stay the way it is

    • @izzahnazri101
      @izzahnazri101 5 лет назад +1

      Dustin M. That's a good point! When you said that your students get to decide the layout of the class, the first thought that came into my mind was how do you control those young kids?! like what if they argue, how do you make them compromise or reach a decision haha so you're right about the risk. I would imagine educators in the mainstream education system and the curriculum of teaching itself have a lot to consider before trying or adapting a new system too. Also since I think most people see jobs as the ultimate purpose of education, there would be a lot of resistance or require a lot of courage for change and experimentation with a new system.

    We’re doing PYP for the first time this fall so doing a bit of research. I used to do flexible seating for centers/guided reading but I like the idea of having the kids design the class. How do you have kids choose their seats each day?

    • @DustinRoonz
      @DustinRoonz  4 года назад

      Hey there! Sorry for the late reply. I just now saw this comment. Unfortunately, we had to revert back to classical seating arrangement due to the whole Covid protocol with plastic shielding on desks.
      BUT, to answer your question... I honestly just let them decide what worked best for them. It's just like us... some days we like to sit at a table and work, other days we may like sitting on the couch or in bed. Really, I just let them decide. However, if I saw they weren't using the space correctly or were not working, I would ask them to try a new spot out in the classroom. For the first day, we made classroom agreements regarding how to use the work spaces and what to do/what not to do and if they broke those agreements, they would have to change spaces.

    • @DustinRoonz
      @DustinRoonz  5 лет назад +1

      Awesome! Congrats on the position 😁😁... honestly, you don't need any specific certification. If your school is a candidate school, they should be sending you to a level one Making the PYP Happen training. If I'm not mistaken, it's a requirement that all teachers get that during their candidacy. I've just been lucky enough to be working at different pyp schools and picked up level one, two, and three trainings along the way. 😊

    Great video! Been offered a job abroad to teach at an IB PYP school, I feel super nervous! 😣it's pretty new to me as I've always taught the British Curriculum here in the UK. Did you make another video to explain the PYP Programme?

    • @DustinRoonz
      @DustinRoonz  4 года назад +1

      Hello! Honestly, I felt nervous as well my first year teaching PYP as I always taught the traditional American curriculum back in the US way back when. The first year is always the hardest. There is so much new information being thrown at you and terminologies. It took me a good 2-3 years of teaching it to truly come to appreciate it and understand it. So my advice is don't overwhelm yourself with trying to learn it all in one year because it's a lot. Set a goal for one aspect that you want to really learn to incorporate into your lessons (key concepts, connecting your unit to other subjects, i.e. reading, math, etc.) Then, as you get more experience and see how others to it too, you can start adapting it to how you teach.
      I haven't made an update video yet. Honestly, this year has been a challenge with the social distancing and reverting back to traditional seating because of the covid stuff but we have to adapt. Hopefully it all goes back to normal soon.

      Believe it or not, I had 2 students who spoke 0 English come in, one from Korea and one from China. They get separate reading and writing classes from to help them build up the basic fundamentals of English. One of them has advanced so much that she will be back in my regular reading and writing program in a week or so. At this age, they learn English so quickly because they are fully immersed in it. We set individual goals to help those students grow at their own level rather than treating each child identical. When we do that, it takes off some of that pressure and allows them to grow at their own pace.
