    It's insane what Tim Follin managed to do with the NES soundchip.

    It's always so nice of Tim to include full games with his album releases

    Yeah, Pictionary - a game where you draw a picture and a teammate tries to guess what you're drawing - is such a "basic" game that the title screen is kinda legendary for going as hard as it does.

    I believe the comments on one of these videos says something to the effect of “We are playing Pictionary, not saving the world.”

    I found Tim Follin when I played Solstice as a kid, but I've loved all the stuff I've heard from him since. He really has a unique and awesome style. It's kind of crazy that one song from one game can just instill such a core memory that you keep coming back to it.

    I love Tim's music, definitely one of my favorite composers ever. He's definitely a reason I grew up loving prog rock and prog metal and probably shaped a lot of my music preference. I learned of a lot of cool games and OSTs going down the rabbit hole of his track credits as a kid. Probably mostly known for his work on Solstice and Silver Surfer on the NES, and Plok! on the SNES, but that guy was a real wizard on the Amiga, ZX Spectrum...lots of talent in there!. I know I've requested a bunch more of his work over the years and on various consoles while he was in the industry, so looking forward to you getting to hear more!

      I think Jesse has heard the Plok boss theme, but I really hope he gets to any of the long level themes. prog as hell

    Tim Follin looked at a video game adaptation of a board game for kids and decided it needed a banger of a song... for some reason.

    • @rubberwoody
      @rubberwoody 5 месяцев назад +4

      Apparently he never composed the song with the game in mind. He just took jobs as an excuse to make stuff

    • @ChaoticHoly
      @ChaoticHoly 4 месяца назад +2

      @@rubberwoody He did understand thematic melodies, though. Look at Spider-Man/X-Men on the SNES. Each theme really fits the character/stage.

    I always love those times when people hear this one without context for the composer, get an expectation cause its on the NES and lose their minds when they hear it.
    Also fun to think of "hey man the pictionary game needs a simple title theme real quick" and he's over there sipping a drink ".....I gotchu" and then he blasts it.

    It's crazy what Tim Follin managed to do with the NES' very limited 5 sound channels.

    • @Plasmariel
      @Plasmariel 6 месяцев назад +8

      Fun fact:
      that's not 5 channels,
      there are no DPCM samples here.
      It's 4 channels.

    • @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her
      @ZaCloud-Animations___she-her Месяц назад +2

      @@Plasmariel Yup, as far as I know Tim never used the sample channel in any of his NES music (though correct me if I'm wrong). Those clean snares (& much more) were conjured up with technical wizardry in the noise channel!

    • @Plasmariel
      @Plasmariel Месяц назад +3

      @@ZaCloud-Animations___she-her That is correct.

    Could honestly listen to the whole pictionary soundtrack, a medley with all the songs only last 10 minutes and it got some fun ones, like, one is literally just Another One Bites The Dust by Queen!

    My fave NES soundtracks: Batman, Shatterhand, Shadow of the Ninja, Falsion, Gladius II, Jackal, Bucky O'Hare, Castlevania III DC.

    Rob Hubbard is also a great composser at the time. I know him composing things for Commodore 64 like Commando and Monty On The Run

    • @HarveyHirdHarmonics
      @HarveyHirdHarmonics 4 месяца назад +1

      I kind of prefer Rob. Tim had the (slightly) better technical mastery, but his tunes are often mostly riffs and solos. Very awesome ones, don't get me wrong. But Rob's tunes have those catchy melodies which are stuck in your head for ages.

    I believe this is based on a board game kinda thing... It may still be popular, but I haven't noticed it come up in a while... I'm not sure how this version plays, but I think people would have to draw things and people had to guess what it was supposed to be... I expect that would be more difficult on an NES lol. Oh well, you never know... Sometimes they'd get creative with these things or maybe there would be a special controller or something... Maybe a mouse or some kind of roller ball controller... But maybe they went a different direction with it... Kinda curious to look it up now...
