Only one symphony trumps this one for me - the Eroica! ...and I am a fanatical lover of Mahler and Shostakovich! :-) And, despite a few critics, sometimes a symphony like this HAS to be played hell-for-leather, all-stops-OUT!
I did not think I would ever find one classical music video to call the best of RUclips but this extraordinary performance certainly qualifies as one of the very best. The performance has incredible energy and passion and the playing of the orchestra is magnificent. If you enjoy symphonies of the late romantic era, this concert is well worth watching. The tympani part alone is worth your time.
This is one of my favorites. Rattles performance ranks as one of the best. Nielsen is undervalued, but I believe he is one of the greatest symphonists of the 20th Century,
@@andrewbarrow3466 In some parts he is properly valued, certainly in Scandinavia. The US has been slow to take to Nielsen, although he's had his champions like Bernstein. Still, he is not performed that often, compared, say with Sibelius.
@@maginzentroideone9666 Nielsen should be played everywhere, always. The NY Phil recordings with Alan Gilbert are really good - Rattle is able to do it here, and Gilbert is, but several conducters struggle hard, and results does not always meet the effort. Nielsen is hard to play, but when you succeed, it’s magnificent!
Yes, Nielsen is underrated. I`m German and listened my lifetime intensely to "classical" music, but in 40 years I heard only his clarinet concerto by chance. Whilst my many trips to Copenhagen I realized Nielsens extraordinary status for the danish people. So I discovered him actively. The 2nd, this 4th and the 6th are just great music!
His 3rd, 4th, and 5th symphonies stand against all the greats. If only people bothered to be open to a different language of sound. These easily rank among the best orchestral music ever composed.
Just heard Osmo Vanska perform this with the Pittsburgh Symphony a few weeks ago. He went one better. He stepped up on the poium and did not even turn around to take a bow, and immediately started the work with those famous opening bars. What an amazing performance it was.

A truly great composer, but is he undervalued? Are you sure?

Yes, a hundred years ahead of his time !
Rattle is the maestro. Simply the best.
Yes, whether it's Nielsen or John Adams, the very best !

Nielsen and Sibelius composed symphonies as good as Beethovens and almost as good as Mahlers!
This is 21st Century music, and should be called The Timpanic Symphony!
this symphony has the most abrupt beginning, like someone tore off the 1st page!!

Wow! That timpanist at the very end NAILS those last 4 notes !!!!
Note: Two sets of tympani !

Badly unbalanced in places - particularly the last few bars. The music is good enough without your fiddling with it, Simon.
