    Found your channel yesterday. Superb. Having been in the pub trade and previously lived in London, you are reminding me of happy times. Not sure about your pronunciation of Meux though…..

    Hello. I just found this channel, and it is great. Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell played at the Apollo, around the corner from The Coach and Horses. I worked there at the time as an usher and saw the play hundreds of times. Tom Conti replaced Peter O'Toole and was much less everything than Peter O'Toole had been. It was later revived at the Old Vic with Peter O'Toole back in the saddle, though by then I was living in Canada and I missed it.

    Yes, a likeness to Brendan Behan indeed. However, he was rarely if ever, as well groomed. As a child in Dublin in the mid/late 50s , I would see him pass by as I played outside The Gate Bar in Crumlin, he being on a mission to visit his parents in nearby Kildare Road, having already visited several pubs. Sometimes he would stop and talk to us children. I remember his tousled hair, crumpled clothes and unlaced shoes. He take our toy guns and relate stories of the IRA while also mothing obscenities quietly towards the Garda officer who usually stood on the corner. He was the first person that I remember smelling drink off although there were many drinkers in our house. I thought then that if writing means you can be drunk I want to write. So I did.

    You missed the toucan, the best pint of Guinness you will get outside of Ireland.

    I used to work in Soho back in the 1980s, and knew pretty much every boozer in the district. I actually worked selling booze to pubs , nightclubs, afternoon drinking clubs,and restaurants. Jeffrey Bernard smoked Senior Service, and was constantly pissed, along with most of the diehard clientele of those establishments. I would say that I remember it well,but I was plastered most of the time !

    I organised a mini-pub crawl in Soho about four years ago and, of the pubs we tried, the Dog and Duck was our favourite. The beer was excellent. We had a decent meal there too. Interestingly I was watching a British film made in the 1950s and some of the scenes were set in the Dog and Duck. The interior looked to be no different today. I imagine that Soho resident Quentin Crisp would have enjoyed the filth in the Comedy Club. I remember a quote of his that he never cleaned or dusted because after a few years the dust didn't seem to get any worse.

      I agree John, the Dog & Duck a little gem of a pub.

    The St. Moritz seems to be a really fine, romantic place, private. In summer, as you said. They serve Swiss Cuisine? Thanks, Joseph Oh, I subscribed.

      Thanks for the feedback! I did get a bit distracted with all the history etc in this video, and you're right, I didn't really make much commentary on the beer! I shall endeavour to give it more attention in future videos.

    So you introduce this pub, which you say suits someone of your quirky disposition. Next moment we're inside the pub. You say it's packed in winter but empty in summer. After you've had a meal you exit. But at no stage do you tell us the pub's name!

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  Год назад +1

      It's St. Moritz - not a pub, it's a Swiss restaurant. A bit out of place in a pub video I know. I mentioned the name around 12:32, also it's in the description.
