I'm not trad goth but I am goth and I'll tell you something right now: if you like how this made you feel, adapt the parts of it you have time for into your daily aesthetic. It will make a HUGE difference!
as a goth I can tell you, first you did a great job and we love the positivity, second goth is typically a music based subculture which also includes fashion and we dont wear those looks everyday, too much work
I'm not a goth, but I was going to say the same exact thing, lol. I've actually done some research on the subculture 'cause I'm an actress (or rather, was, but I still love to dress up in cool outfits), though really the only goth folks I've paid much attention to have been voice actors like Taliesin Jaffe and Erika Ishii.

As a goth man, I definitely approve. You absolutely killed it. I don’t know a single thing about makeup, but when it comes to the clothes I’m an expert at taking black and blood red to make an outfit and you are n a i l I n g i t. That’s what goth stuff is all about, having fun and making yourself look as badass on the outside as you are on the inside.

So what if he doesn't.....eh? I personally don't care what anyone listens to. Music doesn't dictate style despite goth being a "music based" subculture. Technically the fashion came before the music so can we really call it a "music based" subculture? I say, if someone says they're goth, then they are goth...regardless is they listen to the music or not. A lot of these so called "goth" bands absolutely reject the term anyway and say it doesn't apply to them. For example, Robert Smith has never said that The Cure is a Goth band, in fact, he has rejected it every time it was mentioned to him. They just make "rock" music.. Quit gatekeeping a culture you clearly know nothing about.

As a goth kid to a now internal goth adult (makeup is just too much effort lol), you absolutely rocked it! There are tons of sub genres of goth and the makeup ranges from minimal to super extreme. Your make up is almost exactly how I used to do mine. You warmed my little black heart. 🖤🖤

As an elder goth, I can say you killed it with this look. Like you, I did the "normal" kid things and didn't discover the goth scene until I was in my 30s but from there on out those were my people and they are definitely more accepting than the vanillas ever were. The clothes and music are dark and fabulous and the folks in the scene are typically some of the most intelligent people you'll ever find in one place. Find a local goth club night, take a friend, and go incognito...you'll have a great time!

I was actually taken aback by how incorrect the "definition" of goth was that was some vanilla shit where they have never even spoken to a goth or Google it lol
One thing I realized is that a lot of the goth/emo/punk kids grew out of their style to become "normal"
While all the straight A’s kids that tried on an alt style later on got stuck in it for the rest of their life (and also aren’t straight anymore…)

@@sapphomett I grew out of dressing like a goth but not being a goth, like I still love my mulo makeup and industrial pagan goth clothes gut rn you'll probably only ever see me in a t-shirt and shorts, it's so much work lol (it's also hot here so I only dressed and did makeup when it was cold, knee-high armored platform combat boots look great but when it's above 40°C (over 104°F) they are a death sentence)
as an alt person, every time she was like "oh no" I was screaming "YES, YES" at the screen. Alt makeup is supposed to be flamboyant and chaotic, you were doing it perfectly

As a goth, myself, I loved watching this and the end result with you loving it and being so happy is exactly what goth is. It's when you show the world who you are on the inside, outside. It's loving the dark humor. It's seeing the beauty in the dark and macabre. Yes most dress in black and dark clothing, loud jewelry, and have fun with loud makeup, but not all goths do. Some are very plain Jane to the naked eye until you get to know them. While sadness and depression happens to everyone at some point I will be the first to say that I've always been the one known as the happy goth. Don't let stereotypes bring you down. If this is you, let it soar. You're gorgeous, Kris! As for your "goth" name, Phoenix, because out of the ashes you have risen anew. IDK. Just throwing it out there.

THIS. I basically said the same. I keep seeing everyone say music based but that's just not always true. Maybe the majority? I think there are also a lot of roots in religion as well as for me personally, inner self.
Like people can look at me & no longer see that goth teen, but I feel like those of us who know, will know, you know? Lol
I became a mom & felt I could no longer pull the look off & went more toned down. My clothes are mostly still blacks, whites, grays, & dark colors, but I no longer wear defining goth makeup or clothing.
I am however the same person, just an "old" (36) mom now lol.
My kids are mostly grown now & so I am slowly coming back into it, & any time I go harder with it I feel so damn hot & comfortable again!

As a goth myself for about 7 years I figured I'd just quickly point out alot of what goth is, is actually based on the music. You can be goth and not dress like it at all. Music like The cure, siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus and tons of other gothic music is really the core of what goth is. The fashion stuff stemmed from the way these artists dresses. Anyway, I think you did an amazing job and you look so fricking good as a goth. If you ever wanna join our community we would all welcome you completely. :)

I have always loved post punk and heavily associate it with my teens/young adult goth lifestyle. Much older now but still prefer dark clothing and love a lot of the same music.

Just add in the elements little by little if you are uncomfortable going full in right away with the goth look. Baby bat steps , lol. Your confidence and individual style will grow as you add a little bit more more to your look as time goes on. Remember, it’s all up to you how extreme or soft you want to appear. Not all goths dye their hair ( wigs come in handy if hair dye is off the table for whatever reason) . Not all wear super graphic eyeliner . Some don’t wear black lipstick, some wear lots of jewelry and have lots of piercings, some don’t. It’s about what works for you, what you feel like yourself in and what you feel expresses your personality and individuality. Definitely don’t listen to gatekeepers, they are a**holes in any culture. I’ve been goth for decades and I’ve never seen a time more understanding and accepting of goths so that should help you gain more confidence in experimenting with your look and not being too shy to go out in public. I hope this helps you.❤

Fun fact: Goth is a music based subculture, so you can actually look like ANYTHING and still be goth as long as you’re a fan of the music (which is convenient because that makeup is too much work for everyday).

As a blonde Goth, I definitely love this. I usually only wear heavy makeup to clubs and concerts. Every day is just lipstick lotion and sometimes liner. So just a quick thing. Really goth is a music based subculture and you can be goth without dressing in dark and/or gothic fashion, as long as you enjoy the music, though the fashion in certainly a big part of it too that many goths engage with. That being said, that eyeliner is awesome, I love the lines you added! Definitely slayed the look! I’m still a baby bat and I haven’t tried the makeup styles or fashion yet but this definitely gave me some motivation to give it a go :)
As an old lady who was a kid during the huge British (and shortly after Canada), Punk movement. When I went to high school I begged my mother for outfits and boots like you chose. They're perfect!!!!! Still to this day, I wear too much black, black eyeliner, nail polish etc. You did such a good job and the wig just pulled it together :).

You look great either way, but your reaction to seeing yourself in the goth makeup is so precious. I can relate, I also wanted to be a goth SO. BAD. But my mom would have murdered me. Instead, I wrote a 10-page paper discussing the history and values of goth culture for a homeschool class when I was 12 in 2002. 🤣
i got to do a report on goth fashion for my history class in high school lol. i was a wannabe scene kid so i wanted punk but the other alt girl got it first. ironically i am much more into the goth look now. someone told me i had a "casual goth aesthetic" and i was like that is the best compliment i've ever gotten

Maybe we should provide her a better definition of what goth is instead of a "normal" person's preconceived ideas about our subculture based entirely off aesthetic and clearly no interactions with an actual goth, but the look was great
@@ConstantChaos1 Yes we could do that too, but perspective is a big thing too when it comes to it. Like every person who is goth and where you're from determines your view of the subculture. No two locations are exactly the same in how it's perceived let alone the style of goth. She was aiming for the make up concept mostly in this. Which she did a fine job of on her first attempt. That was the focal point. Fashion, and how we carry ourselves to personality comes later. She even said at the end she doesn't feel she did us justice. For instance my personal style in the real world is Victorian goth, and where I was raised the make up styles were drastically different compared to some of the more modern looks people gravitate to. I guess you could say I'm an old style goth compared to modern. So while we can provide her with a better definition, it should be a diverse definition with input from all facets of the goth community, not just my solo perspective or yours.
@Mae oh 1000000% I get so pissed off when I see people talj shit about white goths or pagan/nature goths. Sure the default is all black and makeup.... well like this video or like my pfp, but I know goths who wear earth tones and all their makeup is from natural sources like charcoal, like it seems they just threw up the generic "people in countercultural movements dress in black" and thought it was a day (also this is honestly more abt the editor at least she was like naw I can't define it correctly rn, great idea but then the editor didn't do any research lol even the Oxford definition is like no its about the music, the style came later)
