  • Most times when fans speak about Ozai, they only mention his power. And true, the lore, specifically Avatar extras, makes it clear that (of his time period) he was the most powerful fire bender around. But there is one skill that too many fans overlook.

There's also the way Ozai generates two lightning bolts at once that he shoots from both hands instead of just one hand, and the fact that he can bend lightning and fire simultaneously in his fight with Aang (he activates, deactivates, reactivates and deactivates his fire jets while charging and doing the motions for lightning with his hands), that to me show unparalleled skill and control with his power.

Another time Ozai showed a lot of control over his element is when he sensed that the sun started reappearing after the eclipse and immediately shoots one of the most impressive lighting attacks in the series. Not even Azula seemed to notice her fire bending was back, only reacting after hearing the noise from the explosion.
Ozai also charged his lighting with just a sliver of the sun faster than Azula did during Souzin’s comet and he is the only firebender that has shot lighting from both hands simultaneously.

On another note though, the series makes very clear to show us that ozais greatest power is manipulation, the ability to manipulate urza into leaving whole maneuvering him into the line of succession, the ability to wrap zuko around his finger even when exiled in scorn, and to essentially make azula his little fascist puppet, his precision and intelligence are really the only reason there is a series. In the entire series, Ozai is the only one shown to charge up his flame starting with a small precise burn, and letting out a massive one. To me, the fact he has the control to charge it up and not just fire one strong blast like everyone else, shows a strong level of control wielding a flame. Not just creating it, but manipulating it while its in his hand. And ofc the lightning, and his insane ways of using dual lightning, while flying. Yeah, he is skilled okay.
Some people think Azula is the best because she is the only one that uses blue fire. Blue fire in the real world is a more concentrated and hot flame than the normal orange one. And it is more precise. And yes, Azula is all about precision, but at no point does she show the level of control that Ozai does. Her lightning is more a dark faint blue and not the very bright and strong turquoise color we see Ozai use. She only shoots one and not two. And she never at any point shoots lightning while moving, and has to charge it up in a static motion. Ozai charges two while flying with his jet feet. Like come on.

After Zuko tells Ozai Aang is alive, we can see that Ozai is pissed off, but he just yells at Zuko to leave. Granted he didn't attack Zuko with fire because it was during the eclipse, but we see that Ozai was just waiting for the eclipse to end so he could attack Zuko. Unlike Zhao who was just a rampaging brute with little to no control over his temper, Ozai knew when to restrain himself. Not only is he jacked (and I doubt he got that way by using Iroh’s prison training, he likely would’ve just done his firebending training), he also has several people who he would worry about as potential usurpers, like Iroh and eventually Azula. About the way Zuko sleeps, it could be just military training habits given how militaristic the fire nation is, (and also ninja training habits because zuko is a decent ninja) sleeping on your left puts your heart closer to the ground, meaning it’s harder for someone to get to to kill you, and conversely, sleeping on your right puts your heart to the sky, making it easier to get to. It’s not super clear to my why people cared so much about the heart when your throat makes an easier target since the largest artery in the body is right there, along with the largest vein and your wind pipe but I didn’t write history, I only relay it.
Also, to give my opinion on Ozai’s skill, I believe he is skilled enough to burn a hole through a wood board without leaving a scorch mark on the rest of the wood. I mean, Ozai is definitely the most powerful firebender in the series, but I don't know how much sense it makes to give him credit for Zukos eyesight. It was made pretty clear Ozai has no respect for Zukos physical health and he probably wouldn't care either way, eye or no eye.
Maybe an explanation would be that he's a firebender and can protect himself from his element to a degree, like when he survived his ships explosion with only a few scratches, or similar to how toph can somehow protect her skull from getting shattered when smashing a bolder with her forhead.
But what probably happened here is that some of these characters are simply built different. If Aang can get yeeted into walls in every other episode and not get paralized or die from internal bleeding a single time it's not not too far fetched to conclude Zuko simply got lucky with his eyesight

Ozai knew that Zuko is his heir. If he actually injured his son's functions it would make him look bad as a father, plus hurting his lineage, even if he preferred azula. I never really thought about Ozai on a scale of precision power.
Nonetheless, I'm kinda shocked that people actually thought Ozai was just mindless rage and power - a brutish warlord. Sure, I can agree that Ozai does have a lot of rage within him, but it's a cold rage - a precise one. It's like a blast furnace, not a wildfire. Fire Nation machines kind of reflect Ozai a little bit, I believe - they're strong, and powerful, but they also require finesse. They aren't hammers. They're intricate, advanced, and effective tools. Ozai has ambition, power, and rage, but it's tempered - focused - by cunning, control, and logic. He is a machine of rage, not a raging barbarian.
It's like comparing a blowtorch to a firestarter.
If any of that rambling makes sense, then perhaps it helps reinforce some perspective that Ozai is no brute. He has brutish power, but he himself is certainly not one.

This is also true of other masters in the Avatar world, and not even just benders either. You discussed the Fire Bending Master Jeong Jeong, but there were others that showed it with other styles and practices.
In Season 1, we see this demonstrated with Master Pakku. Despite clearly dominating Katara in their initial fight, he does very little harm to her. Indeed, when he wins the fight, he does so by trapping Katara, who is not only well enough to continue defiantly struggle against the restraints, but also completely unharmed despite being showered with needle sharp spears of ice that perfectly surround and entrap her, but not hurt her.
But this is also demonstrated with non-benders, such as with Season 3, when Sword Master Piandao fought Sokka. Despite his outward aggression towards his student, he clearly never intended to hurt Sokka, both complimenting him and encouraging his student throughout the fight, and stopping before it can escalate beyond a teaching session.
Adepts and Experts both know how to use their skill and power to hurt others, and often do so inadvertantly. It is Masters and Teachers that know how to use their skill *without* hurting others, matching their talents with their intentions perfectly.

Not looking at other comments yet, but my theory with Zuko's sleeping sides would have more to do with the aesthetics more than the hearing ability. He would be more ashamed of his scars in an unfamiliar place, vs with his close companions. He'd be more likely to sleep on his scar to hide it while sleeping to hide his shame. Around those he trusts, he can be more vulnerable.

I think the problem lies with *when* we see Ozai firebend. He is angry is his agni kai. His eldest son and rightful heir just publicly disobeyed him. Ozai is ecstatic in his fight with Aang, at least at first but we'll get into that.
The only time we see Ozai calmly bend is a) on the airship, and b) when he shoots lightning at Zuko. Both times are almost mechanical in their precision and motion. Ozai literally is the power of industry and it is terrifying. Like, comet assisted Ozai torched an entire coastline for several hundred meters inland in minutes without even really moving, and *sustained it for so long* meanwhile Iroh had to do warm ups to take down a (admittedly very strong) wall.
The only time we see Ozai stumble is when he panics when Aang hits avatar state. That, combined with his strong emotions in aforementioned scenes lends itself to evil angry villain stereotypes.

  • @kehinderufai7498

Of course, Ozai is criminally underrated. I participated in a month-long challenge on Instagram, and one question was about who would most likely emerge victorious if Ozai and Iroh duelled without external factors. Everyone else was sure Ozai would lose because he was all power without any significant skillset. I wrote that Iroh is a master, but we have not seen the extent of his skill in a fight against another master. Ultimately, I chose Ozai because his powers were wild enough to cause significant damage yet controlled enough to support his hard-to-defend-against strategy.
Also, other than Azula, only Ozai - and that did not include Avatar-State Korra - could consistently attack with fire and glide about at the same time. Even Master Jeong-Jeong had to hover when he bent fire. He only glided about when he wasn't attacking. And Avatar-State Korra had to turn on the fire jets under her feet over and over again to stop her constant plummeting during her fight with Zaheer.
