  • Hit your golf ball straighter with just one thought. As a 37 yer plus golf instructor I see so many golfers hitting golf balls with the wrong picture in their heads. Just by changing this one thought or picture you can change your ball flight. Once you have the right picture in your head striking a golf ball straight will be much easier.

My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.
    FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.
Why do you make videos for RUclips? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off RUclips? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - Here's my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : ko-fi.com/theg...
    Thanks for watching!

This week I had an epiphany. I played Monday thru Thursday alone, something like 100 holes in response to Brian’s advice about playing for practice rather than range practice. During that time I discovered that my long game, which was my Achilles heel, was forced. I worked out that by loosening my wrists and lagging the club head on the take away produced a rhythmic swing that hit them long and straight. A draw can be produced by tucking my right hand a little further clockwise or fade anti clock wise. On Friday I went on to hit 10 fairways at an incredibly narrow course with the misses only a little off.
Go to any Bobby Jones video for an illustration of this back swing lag.
    Thank you Brian.

Excellent explanation and demonstration Brian on hitting the golf ball straighter. I really liked the alignment stick at an angle off your right heel and left toe suggestion which helps to let you know if your swinging on an arc and not a straight line. Well Done Brian! Your videos are like a fine bottle of wine, they age well! :-)

Thanks Brian for the visual , your spot on…the club has to be closing to stay parallel to the path. The swing happens so quickly that people have the idea they need to keep it parallel to the target line. ( they hang on, and leave the face open). Cheers from Nova Scotia. ( so cold here today I can see my breathe outdoors..not quite links weather yet! )

Thanks Brian - that is a very helpful tip as always. I tried it again this afternoon and found if I can keep my hands relaxed and try getting that release working as well, the ball does go straighter. Have a great time on your golf trip with your dad - that should be a lot of fun.

Well done Steve that is an important discovery to make.
Grip tension is certainly one of the things that prevent the club face from rotating correctly through impact.

I get it Brian, after two looks. the phrase 'square to the path' got me until I realised you meant that the club face follows the curved path. I think everyones DNA wants to hit straight until you understand what you say. Great Video

@@fitzygolfpro Cricketers like me forget that we hit to the leg side by turning the bat at impact with the wrists, but of course the rest of the body may not turn as in the golf swing, and certainly not for straight or offside shots

      Hi Mike.
It's been ages since I saw you.I hope you are going ok and lowering your golf score.
I'm glad you liked the video.
The alignment stick in relation to the feet is best described using a train track concept.
Your feet are standing on one side of the tracks and your club is resting on the other track.
The track where your club is resting is pointing at your target.
The track where your feet are on is parallel to the target but left of the target.
This example assumes you hit the ball straight which no one does.
If you hit with a fade you need to move the tracks a few degrees to the left.
If you hit with a draw you need to move both tracks a few degrees to the right.
      I hope that makes sense.
I look forward to seeing you at the range some time. Just wave and say hi.
