  • December 28/2023 Winter Hike, Alberta Canada
Today we are on a mission to see 6 FROZEN WATERFALLS. We will be hiking 2 different trails in Kananaskis Country, King Creek Canyon and Troll Falls. The King Creek Canyon trail is 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) out and back with an elevation gain of 125 meters (410 feet). The Troll Falls trail is 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) with an elevation gain of 154 meters (505 feet).
King Creek Canyon is located on Highway 40 right where the road is closed at the winter gate. You can just park at the side of the road. There is a day use area here, but it is closed in the winter. It is a short walk from the gate to the day use area. Once you pass the day use area you are almost immediately into the canyon, King Creek will be on your left. The trail was well packed and easy to follow. You will have to cross the creek numerous times during this hike, but the crossings are very easy. The creek was flowing, and it had beautiful ice formations everywhere. Make sure you have your camera out. In a couple sections you will be hiking through the trees with a little bit of up and down. I recommend having cleats, and or poles to make the hike a little easier. The elevation gain on this trail is minimal. As you work your way up the canyon the walls continue to get higher and higher. Just over .9k you will come across an avalanche chute, there are a few of them on this trail. There wasn’t much snow on them when we did this hike. I have hiked this trail quite a few times and there has been snow debris at the bottom of these chutes, BE AWARE. As you make your way up the creek the canyon will get narrower and narrower. At 1.7k you will arrive at 3 frozen waterfalls. The first one is the biggest, the second one is the smallest and the third one is in the middle for size. There were a lot of ice climbers here today. After waterfall number 3 the trail does continue up the canyon, but I have never gone any further. We didn’t hang around here too long as we had another hike to do. This is a beautiful little canyon hike, and I highly recommend it. The temperature was minus 3 degrees Celsius (27 degrees Fahrenheit). We started this hike at 10AM and finished at 12:30 PM. Now time to head to Troll Falls.
The parking area at Troll Falls is very big, but this is a very popular trail so it can fill up. There are 3 frozen waterfalls that we will be hiking to. The trail to the first falls Troll Falls, is very wide and it was well packed. It does have a little up and down on it. Be prepared to see a lot of people on this trail. At .9k you will arrive at a lookout with a beautiful view looking across the valley. Just after this there are 2 Teepees, one on each side of the trail. Kids really enjoy going into these. At 1.4k you will arrive at a bike rack and a bench. Now the trail will get narrower and take you into the trees. Soon you will come across Marmot Creek on your right. Just over 1.7k you will arrive at Troll Falls. If you are just hiking to the first waterfall you can do it without cleats but if you plan to hike up to the other two, you should have cleats. Just over 2k and the trail will start to climb. We met quite a few people coming down and they were having a hard time without cleats and or poles. At 2.3k you will arrive at Marmot Falls. I like this one the best as you can walk right behind it. From here take the steps up and the trail will continue to the Upper Falls. Soon the trail will take you right along the creek and there are numerous little frozen waterfalls. At 2.9k you will arrive at the Upper Falls. On our way back we took an alternate trail below the power lines back to the car. The temperature was 7 degrees Celsius (47 degrees Fahrenheit). We started this hike at 1PM and finished at 3:30 PM.
This was a great day, we saw 6 different frozen waterfalls, and hiked two trails. Both of these hikes are easy. The frozen waterfalls were a little smaller than usual as we have had some really warm weather lately. In total we hiked 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) with an elevation gain of 279 meters(915 feet).
