There is just something about how you are able to explain this with how my mom's family had me practice problems and how my brain always wants to go positive first and to the right, that shows how easy this will eventually be for me. There's so much other notes where the books try to be clever in getting to the end that they leave out the information that we have done before and take for granted. Thank you sir.

The factorizing that he did without the quadratic formula gives the same answer as the quadratic formula, so if none of these had imaginary number answers, then you wouldn't get an imaginary number answers with the quadratic formula either.

From what I understand, to find the critical numbers, you set the derivative to 0 and solve for x. So for the example of f(x) = x^3 -12x, the derivative is f'(x) = 3x^2-12, like in the video. I worked ahead to check my understanding of this, and I got the critical numbers by simply solving for x. I moved 12 over to the other side, then divided both sides by 3, leaving x^2 = 4. Taking a square root of this gives what was found in the video, x = -2 and x=2. TL;DR -- simply solve for x after finding the derivative to find the critical numbers. Factoring and solving for x give the same result, at least in this example.
