    Just to clear up some confusion I'm seeing from commenters: If you are playing in home to a device that can playback the HEVC content there's no need to transcode and your HDR video will remain intact. I do this all the time with my Shield and 4k Blu Rays stored on my NAS. This video is an explanation of what happens when you try to transcode that content when you're outside the house or trying to play it back on something that is not capable of HEVC playback.

      Thanks. What are the reason(s) why you use the Shield, if your 218+ NAS can handle it (ie. watching at your home TV with no transcoding required)?
      Also, will my 216J (w/ only Armada38x CPU) be enough for direct playing of 4k content to Sony 4k TV (X85J)? Just seeing if we'd still need the Shield. Thanks.

    That tone mapping issue is a huge killer. I've had to make a separate library in Plex just for 4K Blu-rays, and put a SDR version of the movie in my main library for transcoding. Wasting space on my server!

    Woooow, you did such an amazing job explaining and articulating the technical steps of 4k HEVC and PLEX. I've been watching so many videos trying to understand things, many videos later, I was still really confused by what tech veterans were saying on Reddit and RUclips. Been running my PLEX server on an a Laptop with an i7 6th gen, been able to play 4k locally just fine, but every six months or so, the multiple HDDs i have hooked up to it would go through some handshake issue had wipe, loosing 20 TB of movie/shows every time. After watching this video, I can gladly say I have pulled the trigger and purchased the Synology DS1520+ with a few 12TB HDDs. Im so excited to finally have a reliable server for my media. I should have enough room to keep those favorite movies in 4k HEVC and 1080. Once its all set up, this will be a huge relief off my mind (when the next time the drives are going to wipe and i lose everything). Thank you very much for this video

      You need to have a compatible optical drive. It also may need to have the firmware rolled back which can be complicated. I have an LG BH16NS40 which had firmware version 1.03 on it. This prevents the ripping of 4k bluray. I had to rollback my firmware to version 1.02 which was done using DVDFAB which is paid software. I can now use MakeMKV for 4k bluray rips. It's costly on the drive space side of things. I just ripped 1917 and the file size is nearly 65gb.

    What we would all really like to see is hdr tone mapping. I gotta say though I’m more than a bit worried that the more likely scenario after seeing what Plex did with the pc platform is that the few remaining clients that support hdr or even basic surround sound might be losing those capabilities in the future. I certainly have not seen fully capable Plex clients increase.
    Speaking of that maybe we’ll get lucky and with the new coming hdmi 2.1 standard along with Earc Plex will spend a few dollars making Plex apps for smart TVs that all support 4K hdr and HD audio like true hd etc. But again that really does require them to do some investing.
    Does it not seem crazy to anyone else that we have to buy a $200 Nvidia Shield because our $1,000 TVs have terrible Plex apps?

    • @pauldusky
      @pauldusky 4 года назад +1

      The issue you are describing has nothing to do with the plex app on the TVs.
      That is all related to whether the TV supports the codecs you are trying to direct play or not. If the TV doesn't support either the video or audio codecs of the file you're playing, it will force the plex Server to transcode to something it does support and understand.
      This behaviour has nothing to do with the app, but the client you are using.

    Nvidia shield is a great server for me. Luckily, most of my content is streamed locally in HEVC and no transcoding is required. I love having the NAS for files connected to the shield to run plex. I have a terramaster nas and although their support is very prompt and friendly, their apps often fall behind Synology.

    Upgraded to dual e5-2680v3 xeons on a Supermicro dual socket LGA 2011-3 motherboard. Going to see if this with VMWare esxi 6.7 and a bunch of cores allocated will be enough for proper transcoding. In esxi you have to use a nVidia Quadro p2000 to properly transcode in esxi and do pcie video passthrough.

    Not sure if this has been covered in a video before, but I'd be curious if you have any tips about getting the most out of Handbrake, especially for 4k HEVC videos. For anything less than 4k, I convert it to the h264 MKV formats. For 4k videos I can convert them to h265 format which gets listed by Plex as "2.7k" for external streaming and that only the raw rip of the movie shows up with a 4k HEVC label in Plex. Is there a better way to handle 4k videos. The raw files are like 50+ GB which I would prefer to not keep around if I could avoid it. The raw rip files for 1080p movies is ~30GB but I don't believe much, if anything, is lost converting them to 1080 h264 ~1-3 GB size. I've been meaning to research this at some point but if you're looking for video ideas, doing more in-depth on video formats and Handbrake could be interesting.

    • @ethanlatimer1956
      @ethanlatimer1956 4 года назад +1

      Hey there Nate. I see that your comment was left with no response. I would suggest a NAS. It's really up to your preference, but the data redundancy is better than PI. I ran Plex on a Pi 4 4GB for a solid few months, but without redundancy, it's not worth it, especially if a NAS can kill the storage and server all in one go. You can also get WD or Seagate NAS drives, maybe even WD Gold, but only in a NAS. I do recommend Gold drives if you are serious about your data and want to run 24/7, especially if you are running uncompressed MKV or MP4/M4V files because those will cause the drives to read significantly more data during their usage.

I don’t cate much that it can’t do HEVC since my shield does it, but you’ll probably spend at least 300-400 if you want to use it as a Plex server. Probably more frankly.

    Switching color spaces during transcoding is difficult to do correctly. Digital TV, blue-ray, uses Color Space: REC. 709. REC. 709 is 8-bit. UHD HDR uses Color Space REC.2020 and can be 10-bit or 12-bit. Color Space: DCI-P3 is used for motion picture film as is what you see in theaters. Must 4K tv's will try to reach some percentage of DCI-P3. A 1080P tv will only support REC>. 709. I do not believe there is currently any tv that support REC. 2020.

      Plex forcing this transcoding is really getting on my nerves. Especially for live TV. Many of us are using older and/or low power systems for a server making the feature unusable and transcoding locally is redundant. We want control back for HOW our media is shared. Been using Plex for many years but I'm about to start all over and switch to Emby.

    • @ethanlatimer1956

      I think that it was to demo for those that are doing it outside of their home. A lot of people have limited upload speed. I need to transcode if I'm over at a friends house since 12mbps isn't close to enough as what I can get locally. Luckily, hardware transcoding OTF exists in plex, and if your server supports it, this is exactly why there was a demo. It was also to show how efficient the process is depending on your hardware capabilities.

    Lol. Their default windows software can only play stereo. Useless for movie watchers.

    Just plug your HDD into your 4k TV or 4k bluray player or nvidia shield TV box. Dont waste your time with transcoding or streaming its wank

      That's not really an option if you want to watch your media on more than one device, have more than one person accessing it, have more than one device accessing it simultaneously, or want to watch it outside of your home network. All those things are the reason people use a NAS for serving media.

      The point of transcoding is watching away from home and when traveling.

      I watch 4K mkvs ripped from my UHD Blu-ray’s via streaming and I never end up transcoding on my shield TV. It is the one STB that out does even a dedicated HTPC when it comes to Plex and 4K HDR playback. And I m using a wireless mesh network on top if that. Not sure why you’re claiming streaming is an issue.

      @@TimTringleJr you lose bit rate ass hole I prefer full bit rate via a raw file. Hope this clears things up. You cannot beat a movie for audio and video quality plugged directly into a usb source. Try just plugging it into the tv or 4k bluray player.
