I backwashed tons of times last year and still had algae and pressure issues. Filter would clog within 4 hours of starting. Thought backwashing would clear it all. Just took mine off and it was disgusting and all gummed up. Cleaned out and recharged filter with fresh DE and my pressure is in the normal range. Thanks for the video. Saved me pool opening headaches
I've been watching and rewatching this a bunch, just moved into a new place that came with this filter and this has been the ONLY video to really help me out with it thus far. Thank you!
Hello, Great Channel I'm a new pool owner we have a 16 by 32 ft. Inground 2 ft to 10 ft. I have a 36 sq. foot DE Cartridge filter. (Hayward) We bought a Foreclosed On Home. Pool was abandoned for 2 years I skimmed out 450lbs to 600lbs of Black/brown soot. Yes 450/650 LBS. Water was Black. Following minimal soot in skimming net. I shocked water with 5lbs of shock a day. Ran filter 5 days 24 hrs. Back washing 3 times in between total filter cleaning. Water is now crystal clear. But filter pressure is still rising to 20 to 25 lbs. psi after 4 to 6 hrs run time. After 3 or 4 back washings pressure is shooting right up to 25lbs within 1 hr of filtering. I soaked grids in Muriatic Acid (by the way grids are new). I thought perhaps from water being so black they were compromised. No Improvement ??? Is it normal for DE filter pressure to rise in such a short period of time. Even though water is so clean and clear. After cleaning filter I put in 6lbs of DE. Total Chlorine 4 ppm Free Chlorine 3 ppm PH 7.4 Alk. 100 Hardness 250 !! CYNARIC ACID "0" ??? What do you think? Just friendly advice I realize to difficult to diagnose with certainty without first hand inspection. Your educated guess is better then my No Clue kbowledge.... Thank You Cruzer In CT
Use that tare button man....put the can on, then hit tare, it will zero out the can's weight....no more math needed (aside from dividing for number of cans) Thanks for this video. Installing my EC70 DE this week....bookmarking this for maintenance dates.
Thank you so much for sharing this. It is been a week ago since I opened my pool. And the pressure is still under 10 but I was thinking to cleaning up the filter...Now I know exactly how to do the process. Very helpful 🙏
3:51 - If you go the 2-cycle route (as opposed to pulling the top and spraying), do yourself a favor for the 2nd cycle and just leave the vent plug open...besides allowing it to fill up faster by allowing air to vacate the filter cavity, it will let you know when the filter is full of water as some will start spitting out. Great informative video.
Thanks for that! the design has changed a bit now theres like 15 bolts on top that hold the pressure lid down, no more band, but wow was my filter gunked up. saved me alot of troubleshooting and stopped me wasting even more DE.
My only addition would be when I take the head off I also check the screws are tight for the "tentacles" as I call them. I had one pop off mid season one year which leads to dirty D.E. blown back into the pool.
Hi, thank you for the excellent instructions. I used your steps to clean the DE filter. But after a while the pool pump pressure is back to to 30 PSI and the water flow is weak. Do you have any other ideas?
@@rafaelaramirez4907 You need to add DE to filter every two weeks or if you see the water getting cloudy. If you do not use it the pool water would get cloudy and dirty and ph would be off.
What would you call it if your finger filters are clean (white) but your pressure starts off around 23 psi? When I first purchased the pool the PSI started off around 13 to 15 PSI? Pool is 15,000 gallons and I use around 5 pounds DE.
I hope you can help I did t everything right and the pressure just keeps going up or now I got it to start at 5 but then goes right up to 20 and now pool green agen the fingers have been cleaned so good inside out and 5poinds of de need help thanks
Thank you for the video. I have the same filter and haven't had a problem since switching to it from a cartridge type a few years ago. This year the suction/return drops to very weak within 3 hours of changing it bumping the Earth. Any suggestions,??
I'm late to this, but I've run a similar Hayward DE for 9 years now and mostly love it. I think your water isn't cleared up yet. DE filters down to around 10 microns and results in extremely clear water but that also means it doesn't take much particulate to load it up. After my initial cleaning of the water in my 17x33 inground, I usually only need to bump it once a week or so. Our pool is lightly used but uncovered and the filter runs around 8 - 10 hours a day.
Is the pool very dirty? I have found that at the beginning of the season (right after I take the cover off) I'll have to clean the filter several times (depending on the level of algae). However, once the pool is clear, you shouldn't have to do this very often (if at all) until the end of the season.
I think i was using too much DE. I was going by the amount it says on the filter. I bumped it a couple times and flushed out the excess DE. Had no issues with the pressure since.
Are you able to push the bump handle down while the pump is on or do you need to have the pump shut down before you depress the bump handle? Thanks for your time with these videos we appreciate it
I think it's the power of your pump. I did notice that when I had 3 different pump hooked up. One read around 8-9"normal", the other read 11, and my new powerful variable speed one fully cranked up read 20-21. This is after its clean. The new pump is 1.5hp. Older one is 1hp but varies on both older ones. With the newer pump I can change the speed and power of the pump, so I can see the psi goes up and down depending on the speed and power of the pump.
@@law35penn im trying to have it at 10-15 psi. It seems like when its @ 20 , its not sucking where the skimmer is and its not pushing out powerful at the return.
After I took the filter out to clean, I noticed a piece of metal in the bottom of the canister... About the size of a half dollar, beveled on one side, and a hole in the middle. Any idea what this is?
How often do you do this for your pump? Just got my first de filter and pre coated to the recommended amount. How often do i need to put de ? Is it good for a season or just until I see a dramatic jump is psi?
Best bet is to download the instructions specific to your model. For example, the model I have recommends changing the DE if the pressure increases 10psi. If the pool water is clean you should be okay the entire season. However, if the pool water is green and you need to shock the heck out of it, be prepared to replace the DE quite a few times.
Ok, my dilemma now is that my pressure doesn’t go above normal (10-11 psi) but this thing (exact same model) clogs every 10-15 min! Do I need to open it up and clean it? Please advise
@@dontellgucci1117 I ended up opening it (which was a hassle and I got water all over me and was walking in water half way up my legs) and pressure washing it. When I closed it again and turned the pump on I noticed it lasted longer than before before it started slowing down again. So I called a pool company and they send a couple guys and they acid washed it (for $95, kinda pricey but worth it since it’s kind of dangerous to do it alone). Not it is running better but still slows down but after hours from backwashing or stop and turning up the pump again. I think it’s a combo of the algae building up inside the filter and the system losing pressure somewhere. Try the acid wash and let me know. But be really careful if you do it yourself. Just hire someone. Good luck.
You have to soak the " Fingers " overnight in a mixture of water and Muriatic Acid. It's the stuff you use to clean bricks and concrete. By just cleaning the " Fingers" with just water does nothing. It's like just rinsing your dishes with just water after you eat and putting the plates back. You need to get inside the " fingers " and clean them from the inside out !!!
Actually, not true. You need to do a deep clean of the fingers either at the end of the season (when you disconnect) or before the season (before you connect). You don't (and shouldn't) soak the fingers every time! A simple disassembly and quick rinse with a hose is certainly sufficient (and really only needs to be done about 1x per season (I suggest mid-summer) AFTER the pool is clean and up and the filter is up and running.
Thanks for the video I was wondering what tool I needed to take off the bolt since most of the other videos either already have it lossened or are older and have lugnuts around the top As for adding DE why not just buy a DE scoop from the pool supply store they're only a couple bucks and a scoop (leveled of course) is equal to a pound 😂

Believe it or not, your filter needs another degreaser cleaning. This will bring the PSI down or you may have a defective psi gauge.

when you have solid pool piping and not flexible it makes this cleaning process an once or twice a year reality unfortunately.
