    ABOUT BERNADETTE BANNER
Bernadette Banner is a filmmaker and dress historian, best known for her RUclips channel documenting the exploration, reconstruction and interpretation of historical dress. Her work focuses on English and American dress predating the widespread use of the electric sewing machine, with a particular focus in the years of dress between 1890 - 1914; all reconstruction work is done by hand or with the use of period authentic machinery.
In addition to rediscovering the methods by which clothes were made in the past, her RUclips channel seeks to explore how we in the 21st century can learn from and adopt historical sewing techniques and attitudes towards dress in an effort to fight the effects of fast fashion and mass manufacture. After some years working on costume design teams for Broadway (Aladdin [Broadway, West End, International]; Annie [2012 Revival], Something Rotten! [Broadway]; Tuck Everlasting [Premiere]; Kinky Boots [National Tour]), Bernadette graduated from New York University in 2017 and began collaborating with the team at the School of Historical Dress on reconstruction and publication projects.

Which fantasy show or movie has your favorite costumes-and why?

One of my favorite historical TV shows is Gentleman Jack, for precisely the reasons Bernadette Banner explains in this video. The costumes transport the viewer into the story and the minute attention to detail keeps us believing in this world, without modern eathetics just "because we can't not put actresses in modern underwear and make-up".

Lord of the Rings. The thought and care that went into production quality and costuming especially. Blows my mind!

Bernadette: It looks like an Edwardian lingerie gown.
The Video: Shows images of Edwardian underwear.
Me: Clearly Bernadette was not in charge of the image choices.

Oh my god yes! This is bordering on the level of snaffu as some of the drawings on that series analyzing costumes from TV shows lol.

Clearly. Also, this post would get a lot more views if they actually used a name instead of "A Dress Historian", although she does not usually call herself that.
Also, I like her style of video a lot better, it feels kind off time travel into the modern era seeing her and hearing her slightly antiquated way of speaking in this very stark video style.

I raced to the comments to see how others reacted to this too 😂
I’m afraid it doesn’t improve my already poor opinion of Skillshare, but raises my opinion of Bernadette even more, as usual.

Love anything with Bernadette Banner! I agree that Skillshare could have done better by listing her name in the title and knowing what an Edwardian lingerie gown is.

Bernie mentioning the regency silhouette, the editor chooses pictures of the two characters with the least amount of regency silhouette... Lol.

Rita Skeeter was a gossip reporter, so dressed more “fashionably”. She was an Animagus, a wizard who could turn into different things. She turned into a mosquito, thusly the dress mimicked an insect’s carapace (yes, I know mosquitoes don’t have a green, shiny carapace, but, hey, it’s the wizard world). So the costume designer was using the dress to give the audience clues as to Rita’s magic and method of collecting juicy tidbits of gossip. Clever. My personal belief is that wizards feel free to find their own styles from their past and present. Not unlike you, Bernadette. It’s the Muggles who toe the current fashion line. I love the HP costumes.

i thought that rita skeeter changed into a beetle? because krum picked a beetle out of hermione's hair after the second task, which is where skeeter got the information about krum inviting hermione to visit during the holidays. i dont imagine that it'd be easy to pluck a mosquito out of hermione's hair, with the way that it was described in the books

    • @Ancient_War

@@CrazyCatBeanie Oh, you’re good! She turns into a flying beetle. I think I “remembered” a mosquito because of Skeeter which is short for mosquito. At least here in the southern US. That explains the shiny green clothes, too, which are indeed like a carapace. Thanks for the correction. :)

Ummmm…. Yeah, Bernadette would be aghast to see random images of Edwardian undergarments instead of actual Edwardian Lingerie dresses 😂😂😂.
    Come on, Skillshare. Do better!
